Martin, 8 May, 18--? (c.1813?). Ref: A glimpse of the Montgomrey cousins ("much younger than you, you know"); a challenge to EMM's fondness for geography. Original folded and sealed as a letter. Superscribed "from Aunt Montgomrey" and, below the words Tansor Lodge "which we left in 1814" which would appear to date the letter 1813-14.

Brentford, 31 January, 1828. Letter folded, sealed and postmarked. Endorsed to keep, 31.12.80. E.M.M. Ref: Paternal congratulations to E.M.M., "as a young man just 21, just out of apprenticeship," on being appointed to "a manager's place" in Evan's House, "as respectable a House as any in London"; advice as to deportment and moral behaviour therein.

Endorsed "to keep, 31.12.80, E.M.M." and "4.11.88 - to keep for my Exors to read my dear cousin's opinion of my wife" and 21st Aug. '89 and also about my dear Uncle, her father." Ref: failing health of Edward Montgomrey.

Martin, 16 Dale End, Birmingham, 22 March, 1843. Folded, sealed and postmarked as letter. Later superscribed - "to be kept for Mrs Whitfield". Ref: Thanks to recipient and gentlemen of the Committee of the Fellowship Fund" for a donation; hard times at Trowbridge, in common with other places; but Rev. Martin's chapel "never better attended", 250 scholars in Sunday School.

3.1/166 Original on foolscap parchment, from E.D. (?) Montgomrey to Mr Martin,

Tansor Lodge, near Stilton, 21 May, 1806. Letter folded and sealed as envelope, post-marked TWO-PENNY POST, OLD BRENTFORD. Notation in different handwriting - May 1806 - 1833. And in pencil: Uncle's appreciation of my father for E.M.M. Ref: A bereavement not clear to this reader; "Uncle's appreciation of my Father, for E.M.M." as noted on original letter; affairs arranged with Mr. Anthony which will lead the writer "to enter more into the world", apparently through a business venture.

3.1/167 From Susanna Martin to her first-born son Edward Montgomrey before

approaching birth of her second child, written 30 December, 1807. Original on parchment, folded in plain outer sheet, addressed to Edward Montgomrey Martin and bearing a black seal impressed "S.M.". For notations thereon, see original. Susanna Martin was 27 at the time of writing this letter. Ref: Advice and instruction in event of her demise.

3.1/168 Letter from Henry Beasley, Uxbridge, to E.M. Martin, Wholesale Druggist,

Moore Street, Birmingham, 10 May, 1850. In envelope (original), plus Seal with Crest. Superscribed - To keep, from Henry Beasley - Anne's 1st cousin. Read 21 Aug, 1889; and again Mar 15, 1892 to keep him in memory. Ref: Henry Beasley's comments on E.M.M.'s plans to emigrate; the necessity for "a good vessel, a good captain, surgeon, etc."

3.1/169 From Susan Martin, Grey Place, Birmingham, to Mr. E.M. Martin, Mrs.

Avery's, Millbray Grove, Plymouth, 12 November, 1850. Letter folded, sealed and postmarked as envelope. Endorsed "to keep 29.7.58", "also 19.8.84. E.M.M." and "for my Ex'rs - E.M.M. 4.11.88" and "read again 29.1.92, to keep E.M.M. Inner fold bearing a line of shorthand, yet to be deciphered. Ref: Presumably the departure of Edward, Anne and family for S.A., inference being that Anne & children embarked at an earlier port than Ed. and that bad weather delayed the vessel's arrival at Liverpool; and including lines from Mrs. A. Hall to farewell the wanderers "to be sung to the tune of the National Anthem".

Ref: This letter obviously written during the gap between the arrival of Edward and Anne in South Australia and the return of mail to England. Mostly domestic chitchat: Mr Thos. Clark leaving Birm'm to "reside on the continent."

sent off previous day, contents described; to Jame's Lucy's and Annie's description of "your house at Norwood"; "removal" (?), death (?) of Mr Clark; comment on family portrait - children "so little altered in 2 years and a half"; visit to Mr and Mrs Martin at Liscard; inspection of the "Great Britain", expected to make the journey (to Australia?) in 65 days; Sam'l off to Stockholm - "he has something to do with the gas fittings in that city"; Strike of London Cab drivers; junior members of royal family handed on their measles to the Prince, then the Queen"; army manoeuvres in Dublin; plan on foot by Sam'l Beale to erect a Crystal Palace in a portion of Sutton Park.

Martin, 28th February, 1855, from one of her sisters. Letter headed 'Devonshire Place, Selby Oak'. Ref: to Anne as "sister"; the despatch of goods (boots, shoes, etc) and how profit can be made so successfully on these to remit to the sender; family aid to the Wright family.
