Serdang: Leading Green and BiomassCity _Mohd Yazid Mohd Yunos & Noorizan Mohamed

INTRODUCTION

Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) and its synergiespartnered with, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), moveforward in their "green initiative" with the launch ofSerdang Greentown in 2012. Serdang is developing intoa Greentown in a way that affects the preservation andconservation of the environment. Serdang Greentown isalso being marked as the first "Biomass Town in Malaysia".Biomass is a renewable energy source that can be useddirectly or converted into other energy products suchas bio-fuel. The sources include biological material fromliving such as garbage, wood, waste, landfill gases andalcohol fuels.

The project is located at SriSerdang consisting of Serdangcommercial area, residential area and the UPM entrancefrom Serdang. The MPSJ-UPM initiative iscreating a greencommunity, improving the quality of life, and promotinga sustainable township for Serdang residents. A properMaster Plan site planning for Serdang Green Town projectis necessary to promote its sustoinobllltv.

BACKGROUND

The course has two objectives. Firstly, to solve designproblems at medium -scaled sites through the applicationof proper site planning and design process. Secondly,to solve complex site planning problems focusing atinstitutional areas, public parks or resorts.

A site visit was carried out at the Sri Serdang where thestudents visited the site and produced inventory andanalysis plans as a group effort, followed by the synthesisplan, idea and conceptual plan. A Master Plan wasproposed in groups and later detailed area plans forselected area were designed by individual students.

DESIGN SOLUTION

Two artefacts were selected as case studies under thistopic.

a. City of Sustainable Rendezvous

The design emphasises of evoking and culturingthe pervading spirit of the place 'The Spirit of GreenSustainable City'. The concept of 'City of SustainableRendezvous' puts emphasis on the union of Serdang withits local cultures, community and socialised it within thenature conservation.

b. Livable Serdang Green Town

The design ingeniously plays with flux of movementsand interconnect Tasik Sri Serdang to others places. Theconcept of 'Green Connection Network' reveals thequality of human life through sustainable landscapedesign. The design emphasizes a linkage to the UPM'sentrance gate and the UPM's Bird Sanctuary.

DISCUSSION / FUTURE STUDY

Altogether, students have shown great efforts andaptitude to design and present their ideas for a greentown concept. Majority students understood how awell-designed and planned green town could providesustainability environment. The design of spaces suchas open public areas, linkages from UPM to Sri Serdang, community area offer liveable spaces for the Serdangresidents. On the other hand, the understanding ofrelated theories of sustainable site planning such asconservation, preservation, and biomass town shouldbe fully understood in order to appreciate the users andspatial articulation. These concepts of sustainable cityare applied in the Serdang site planning throughout theproject.

City of SustainableRendezvousMohd Vazid Mohd. Vunos, Nor Atiah Ismail, Noorizan Mohamed& Mohd Kher Hussein

The proposal highlights the sustainable design of Serdang Green Town as aburgeoning town consisting of a diverse mix of Tasik Sri Serdang, UniversitiPutra Malaysia and community area of Taman SriSerdang. The design countsto evoke and nurture the pervading spirit of a Green Sustainable City. Theconcept of 'City of Sustainable Rendezvous' conceptualizes the unionof Serdang with the local cultures, community and socialised it within thenatural conservation. The strength of the design is stretches it bold ideas ofinstalling sustainable components and elements such as vegetation and hardlandscape. Thus, the students proposed in-depth ideas for promoting a healthyand sustainable lifestyle for the Serdang community. A good synthesis revealsthat Serdang Green Town has an enormous potential to be developed assustainable community area based on its current issues and history. Aspectsconcerning energy efficiency, therapeutic element, noise pollution, rainwatermanagement and Biochar solution would be appreciated if provided in detail.

Livable Serdang Green TownMohd Vazid Mohd Vunos, Noorizan Mohamed, Nor Atiah Ismail & Shureen Faris Abdul Shukor

This project explores the potential benefitsof site planning for the Serdang Green Town,The aim is to rejuvenate the intervention of theTasik SriSerdang as heart of community area toconnect UPM, Serdang commercial area andresidential to become livable Serdang GreenTown, The design ingeniously plays with flux ofmovements and interconnect Tasik SriSerdangto others place, The concept of 'GreenConnection Network' reveals the quality ofhuman life through sustainable landscapedesign, Using 'Green Connection network', theproject cleverly enhance and link the UPM BirdSanctuary area located adjacent to the TasikSerdang and at the same times, solves the barrierissue with UPM, The innovative design proposalaimed at the greening and pedestrianising anexisting the TasikSerdang freshens this area, Onthe whole, the design proposal undoubtedlycommunicates the concept and design detailsof the project, Conversely, the project wouldbe improved by showing more detail designs,of pedestrian or elements that connect TasikSerdang to other community areas,
