New, Energetic Principal For Francis Scott Key SchoolBy Hap Duffey

On July 1st, Corey Basmajian assumed the reins as principal of Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle School. After teaching at FSK for his first five years of his career and most recently serving four years as principal of Windsor Hills Elementary School, he felt he couldn't pass up the opportunity to return to FSK! He will use his experience and boundless energy to help FSK achieve its full potential. He believes that FSK has the ability to soar to new heights with a Gifted and Advanced Learning program in Elementary and an Ad-vanced Academic curriculum in Middle School that can rival the best schools in the district.

Mr. B has already conducted numerous meetings with FSK's teachers and PTO Board members, and has reached out to local business leaders to strengthen the school's community relations. He also hopes to work more closely with the Locust Point Civic Association so that the school may become more involved in com-munity events, and to better address community con-cerns. We wish him the very best, and hope his tenure is a long and successful one.

FSK Updates

By Hap DuffeyOver the past 4 years, Francis Scott Key Elementary

Middle School, here in Locust Point, has been trans-formed from an underutilized, neglected educational fa-cility into a dynamic and highly respected school which is attracting motivated students throughout Baltimore City, as well as from surrounding counties. This is a result of its outstanding STEM/robotics lab, its music, art, drama and PE programs, and its Reading Partners

Initiative, which is supported by AmeriCorps fellows. (see www.ReadingPartners.org)

Reading Partners is a nationally recognized edu-cational organization that matches dedicated commu-nity and business volunteers with struggling kindergar-ten through 4th grade students. The program utilizes an easy to follow evidence-based curriculum with a proven success record. A volunteer can devote as little as one hour a week to work one-on-one with a student who is reading below grade level.

Volunters Needed For FSK's Reading Partners Program

By Erin Karpewicz

FSK's PTO is working hard to plan the FSK Kids' Zone at the LPCA festival and would love for you to save the date for our Holiday Extravaganza on De-cember 2nd. The FSK community is thrilled about the new state of the art library being developed at FSK- on track to open in late fall. Stay tuned on Facebook and our website for more information about an October/

November Open House for the community to come check out this fabulous new resource!

Last but not least, if you would like to support FSK by donating any school supplies, our teachers have formulated a wish list of items which can be accessed on our website. Thank you for your continued sup-port, we love our LP community! Follow FSK on Facebook: Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle School or visit our website:www.baltimorecityschools.org/76

Then and Now : Fort Avenue at Lowman StreetThis might be called a Then and Then as both pictures are probably from the last century. This photo was tak-en on Fort Avenue facing toward Fort McHenry near Lowman Street. Some stylish roadsters are parked on either side of the road. There is a streetcar stopped in front of the Deluxe Theater. This picture may have been taken in the 1940s, judging from the style of the cars. If this was during WW2, there would be older models still on the road. Beyond the streetcar, you can see the firehouse tower and further down the steeple of Good Counsel Church at Towson Street and Fort Ave. On the right, in the distance , that may be the old Francis Scott Key School.Traffic seems light.

This is also Fort Avenue with two of the same land-marks. The theater and streetcar are gone but the two towers on Fort Avenue are still prominent. This picture might be from the 60s to the 80’s. On the sidewalk to the right you can see the edge of a billboard, “Savings?”, “Santa?”. The bridge that breaks up Fort Avenue has not been built yet but there are today a billboard on each side of the bridge, one where this one is place and one facing the opposite direction on the other side of Fort Avenue. It appears that there are no traffic lights on Fort in this direction. Again, traffic seems light.

Volunteers Needed When a child is not reading at grade level by the

end of 4th grade, he or she is 4 times less likely to grad-uate from high school. Reading Partners provides train-ing as well as tutoring support throughout the entire year to anyone interested in volunteering so that both students and volunteers have an enjoyable, stress-free experience. Despite this, last year FSK was unable to attract enough tutors to accommodate all the students who qualified and desperately wanted to be a part of the program.

With so many dedicated teachers, a highly mo-tivated PTO, and a dynamic new principal, FSK is poised to once again make tremendous gains in help-ing our students excel. However, without community volunteers to augment these efforts, FSK will not move forward as quickly as we and the students would like.

Please consider helping in this or any number of the other volunteer positions available in your com-munity school. If you are interested in volunteering at FSK, please e-mail: [email protected] or [email protected] for further information, or you can contact the school directly.
