Summer Exhibition in Guildford Cathedral

Coinciding with the Paralympics

21st August – 8th September 2012

Art Beyond was inspired by the ‘More Than Gold’ initiative, established ’To enable the UK churches to engage with the 2012 Games’. Also to use the opportunity that the Paralympic’s created, to inspire communities to celebrate the contribution that people with disabilities make to society. The 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics provided our churches with a huge opportunity to engage with individuals and communities around the ideals of sport and culture. Guildford Diocese recognised that it provided an ideal opportunity and formed the Diocesan Olympics and Paralympics Focus Group to consider how best the Diocese, deaneries and parishes might make best use of this opportunity. The group met over the last year to encourage activity linked to the Olympic ideals and to provide ideas and information to parishes about what might be possible including reaching out through sports, community festivals, guest events, creative art and cultural events and mission.

‘Art Beyond Limitations’ was created in response to this initiative and comprised of 4 elements, all based in Guildford Cathedral:

Art Exhibition

Mosaic

Reception event

Dedicated Evensong

Central to the exhibition was an interactive mosaic, which was created by visitors to the exhibition by placing a mosaic piece into the picture, to be later be framed and displayed. Thus everybody whatever their abilities, have together created a unique piece of art.

Surrey’s hidden army of young adult carers aged 16 to 24 years are being targeted in a new campaign from Action for Carers (Surrey) this autumn. Posters and postcards are being distributed to colleges as a way of reaching out to thousands of young people in this age group in the county who are looking after a relative or friend with a disability, physical or mental illness or addiction. Jane Thornton Chief Executive of Action for Carers, commented: “At a time when life should be offering them all kind of possibilities, young adult carers often find opportunities falling away. Caring can hinder or prevent them finding work, going on to college or leaving home and it can have a limiting effect on their social life too.” Contact Action for Carers (Surrey) on 01483 302748, email [email protected] or find out more at www.actionforcarers.org.uk

Community Engagement Officer David Stewart hosted Surrey Police’s first Woking community cricket tournament on Saturday 8th September at the Winston Churchill School Sports Centre in Knaphill.

Teams representing the Woking Malayalee Association, the Shah Jahan Mosque, Milanos, and the New Haweli restaurant in Knaphill competed in a 20/20 tournament whilst children had the opportunity to get involved with free activities with coaches from the Woking and Horsell Cricket Club.

It was a fun filled day topped with a visit from the Mayor of Woking who met with players and staff. The eventual winners were the Shah Jahan Mosque team who confidently won the final and brought the day to an end in fine style. The team were presented with winners’ medals and a trophy by local Knaphill officer PCSO Adam Kilner who had also been key in organising the day.

The event was a great success and was generously supported by donations from Woking People of Faith and Maybury’s Atif Superstore. David Stewart was grateful for all of the positive feedback received from those involved and it is hoped that this success can continue with similar events in the future.

In 2011-12 the bureau had 3352 clients starting a new enquiry, an 8.4% year on year increase, which followed a 5% increase the previous year.

They made 12069 client contacts, a 16.4 % increase on the previous year. This level of increase is explained partly by the full year effect of these switch in September 2010 to a triage system with around half of our ‘drop in’ clients now having a follow up appointment but is also due to increased telephone advice and the full year effect of expanded opening hours together with the recruitment of more volunteer advisers. Cases also show increasing levels of complexity requiring more client contact.

The annual economic value to the community of their 70+ volunteers was £450,000 based on hourly rates supplied by Citizens Advice nationally. This represents enormous value added to our funders.

They helped clients gain £400,000 in additional income, money available to be spent in the local community.

London 2012 has been hailed as a great success for Team GB athletes as they finished third in the medal table, making it the most successful Olympic Games for Great Britain since 1908. Surrey had a considerable role to play in the staging of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Athletes born or based in Surrey made a significant contribution to the achievements of Team GB, and the Surrey contingent would have come ahead of South Africa, Canada and Belgium in the medal table if they had competed as a nation!

Local people are being asked to speak out against domestic abuse during Surrey Domestic Abuse Awareness Week, which commences on Monday 15 October. The campaign aims to encourage those close to someone experiencing domestic abuse - be it a work

colleague, neighbour, family member or close friend - to report domestic abuse.

The awareness week is also aimed at those experiencing domestic abuse themselves. By increasing awareness and promoting early intervention it is hoped the cycle of abuse will be broken. The message is simple - if you suspect someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, make a difference - speak out today.

Call Surrey Police on 101. In an emergency always dial 999. Visit www.surrey.police.uk to report online.

Call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you have information about a crime and don't want to leave your name, or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org to report online.

General information: Call yourSanctuary’s Surrey Domestic Abuse helpline on 01483 776822 or visit www.yoursanctuary.co.uk.

Sunday 30 September, 18h30, St Martin of Tours, Epsom

A special Thanksgiving Service will take place at St Martin of Tours Church to celebrate the Borough’s 75 years. The service will be led by the Bishop of Dorking, The Rt Revd Ian Brackley, who will also give the address. The service will include the first use of a new prayer specially written for the Borough’s anniversary.

Prior to the service a full peal of bells will be attempted to commemorate the anniversary. Starting at 14h00, the peal will last nearly three hours and will comprise the ‘method’ Grandsire Caters.

The Revd Talbot explains “The church bells of St Martin of Tours have been ringing out over Epsom for over 250 years, marking events and worship. Ringing the bells is very appropriate way in which to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Borough. This peal, which uses nine of the church’s ten bells, is physically challenging for the ringers”.

Other faiths will also be acknowledging the Borough’s milestone at their services over the weekend (arranged via Churches Together in Epsom & Ewell churches).

With tensions rising internationally over the recent film ‘Innocence of Muslims’, Shah Jahan Mosque decided to express unity and peacefully condemned such attacks by marking International Peace Day.

Rev Jonny Blair from St Pauls Church, Simon Trick a local Bahai and Mr Santosh from the Malayalee community were invited by Surrey Faith Links to address the Friday

congregation with a message of peace.

Imam Hashmi (Head Imam of Shah Jahan Mosque) delivered the Friday Sermon on the topic of Peace. He advised all Muslims to protest peacefully and reminded the congregation of the peaceful character of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He also mentioned that in some parts of the world the day had been declared as ‘Day of Love for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The sermon was concluded with a prayer for peace in the world.
