For PreparationYou shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt...

- Deuteronomy 15:15

The gentlest physicians are those who have been patients. The best parentsremember what it was like to be a kid. The ablest teachers once struggled asstudents. The most vocal champions for a cause can say, “Hey, I’ve been there.”Empathy is born from experience.

The Lord knows this.

Five times in the book of Deuteronomy, the Lord calls His people to rememberthey were slaves. Each time He commands Israel to perform an especiallycounter-cultural act of compassion, He points them back to Egypt. “Rememberwhat it was like––back before I showed you mercy?”

Mercy. It can take everything in us to keep from acting according to our self-interested sense of justice, of fairness. To hold back when we’re entitled to strike;to forgo Shylock’s “pound of flesh;” to give up the sweet savor of vindication.

The Lord knows this.

And so He calls us to remember. “Hey, you’ve been there. Remember what itwas like––back before I showed you mercy?”

Whate'er my God ordains is right,Holy His will abideth.

I will be still whate'er He does,And follow where He guideth.

Confession of FaithLeader: Christian, in whom do you believe?

All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,Creator of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. The third day He arose again from the dead.He ascended into heaven and sits at the righthand of God the Father Almighty, whence Heshall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen

Words of Institution– 1 Corinthians 11:23—32For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on thenight when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it,and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In thesame way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant inmy blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as youeat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthymanner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examinehimself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats anddrinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is whymany of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves truly,we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined sothat we may not be condemned along with the world.

God is my shepherdI won't be wanting, I won't be wanting

He makes me restIn fields of green, with quiet streams

Even though I walkThrough the valley of death and dying

Redeemed! Some think that James was at odds with Paul when he wrote, "So also faith byitself, if it does not have works, is dead." (James 2:17). Was he? Were there twocompeting visions of salvation in the early church? Join Pastor Polski and KenMcAfee for the next several weeks as we explore the biblical doctrines ofredemption: Justification, Union with Christ and Sanctification, and seek todemonstrate that James' and Paul's vision of redemption were deeplycomplementary.
