A Square D History 1948: Associated Square Dancers (A Square D) was formed. We started

that year with seven clubs. Our first board of directors consisted of seven officers. Soon after, we grew to have over 300 clubs in our membership.

1950: We became incorporated as a non-profit organization. The City of Santa Monica requested square dancing as part of their Diamond Jubilee celebration. A Square D helped coordinate and was one of the principle promoters of the Square Dance Exhibition. Over 5000 dancers and 35,000 spectators responded. As a result of the publicity, many clubs were formed throughout the area. Association leaders felt they could promote square dancing better by working together. A Square D was one of the organizers of what is now the California Square Dance Council. (We are not affiliated with California Square Dance Council or any other council or association).

What We Do: 1.) INSURANCE – it is our belief that A Square D provides the best

insurance option available for the clubs. It is a primary liability and a secondary medical insurance group policy. Without it you are on your own for acquiring insurance to protect your club, your club officers, your club members, your dance venue and anyone else that has anything to do with preparing your facility for an activity. Also, it is almost impossible to rent a facility without getting an additionally insured certificate of insurance from the insurance company for their protection. Unlike some other insurance companies, our insurance company covers anyone and everyone at a dance or square dance related activity and not just the club’s square dancers.

2.) TAX EXEMPT/NON-PROFIT STATUS – Clubs are included under the A Square D umbrella for tax exempt/non profit status when filing Federal and State income taxes. Federal and State income taxes are avoided on income resulting from dancing activities. A Square D provides clubs with representatives who will assist clubs, when needed, to discuss matters like IRS forms, non-profit status, hall rentals, callers/cuers fees, 1099’s and related club business. NOTE: (most of the clubs have been personally assisted in the past few years by the A Square D representative when the IRS and the State have been changing their filing requirements. A Square D also provides the clubs with their 1099’s and 1096’s every year). Also, many facilities require that their facility use be by a nonprofit group, whether or not they receive more economical rental prices.

3.) CLUB SUPPLIES – A Square D provides club and class supplies such as graduation diplomas, certificates (Golden Dancer, Merit, etc.), Mainstream and Plus handbooks, double-roll tickets, color brochures for class advertisement, and much more – some free and some at a nominal fee.

4.) FREE PROMOTIONAL ITEMS – In past years, the clubs received free promotional items for advertising square dancing such as pens, magnets, key fobs, etc. to distribute to their community for advertising, especially around new class time. In the last few years, this has not been the case, since the position of the A Square D board Publicity/Promotions Chairman has not been filled plus the fact that the revenue has ceased to be available from the Labor Day Jamboree and A Square D sponsored dances.

5.) A Square D 800 NUMBER – Callers to the 800 number looking for square dance classes are directed to the closest and/or best club for them. This is

A Square D Club History Lessons HOW WE GOT OUR NAME

Funwuns—We at the Funwuns were not able to find the origins of our club name. We only have a few members who were around when the club was formed and no one seems to remember where the name came from.Orange Coast Lariats—Our name “Orange Coast Lariats” was made up as a result of the Orange Coast Squares and The Lariats joining to become one club in 1999. Happy to say it was a good marriage of the two clubs.

The History of the Boots & Slippers of Simi as Best We Could Find

Researched by Boots & Slippers Hysterical Historical Committee

Veronica, Veronica, Mason & Mason In approximately 1920 on a Friday night a group of 4 bandits robbed a bank in the west end of the San Fer-nando Valley. The local sheriff there rounded up a posse and began pursuit of the bank robbers who were quickly escaping through the Santa Susanna Pass to Simi Valley. The bank robbers knowing the sheriff was close behind stopped at the Santa Susana Pass Saloon. They tied up their horses and ran inside. The robbers, being very familiar with the saloon and the dancing ladies there, said “quick give us a change of clothes so the sheriff won’t recognize us.” The ladies obliged and were able to gather up some pretty fancy duds for the rob-bers. Moments later the sheriff and

his posse burst open the saloon doors. “Did any of you folks see 4 unsavory characters pass through here?” “Nope, sure didn’t.” were the replies. The sheriff walked over to the table where the robbers and the ladies were sitting. “Don’t recognize you men as being from around these parts. What are you doing here?” “Why, sheriff, we’re here to dance.” “Dance? You don’t look like you’re dancing to me. Let’s see you dance.” With that the robbers jumped up, each one grabbed a dancing lady, that totaled 8 people, in case you can’t do the math, formed into a square to “cover each others back” if needed and started moving around the dance floor. A do sa do here, an arm turn through there, a few twirls, a couple left al-lemandes amazed not only the sheriff and his posse but all the other custom-ers as well. “Hey, this is fun,” said one of the robbers. “Yeah” said the others.

“I really like wearing these clean fancy duds too,” was another comment made by one of the bank robbers. Their lady partners were having a good time, too. The sheriff wasn’t that fooled though and asked “what kind of dancing is this stuff?” “This is the newest thing, sheriff. It’s called square dancing.” The sheriff was fooled this time but sort of had a feeling he should return another day and check these guys out again. And yes the sheriff did return. Not only once but several times. Always hoping he would catch the robbers in their old familiar clothes and maybe planning another bank robbery. The bank robbers were loosing interest in robbing banks. Getting dressed up and “square dancing” with the ladies was much more fun. A lot of the other regular customers wanted to learn these fancy steps too. So pretty soon lessons were being offered. Even the sheriff joined in. He too lost interest in chas-ing bank robbers. After all, there hadn’t been another bank hold up since that Friday night the group of 8 got up on the dance floor and formed their first square. As time went on a couple of the “now gentlemen” bank robbers married a couple of the ladies and settled down to a more honest way of living. But they still liked to square dance and the group had gotten quite large. So large in fact they started to dance Friday and Satur-day nights with several dancers showing up only one of the nights and some of them both nights.

One evening several years later, the original group of 8 were sitting around reminiscing the beginning of all this square dancing at the Santa Susana Pass Saloon. “What can we do so folks in the future will remember us and all the fun we have had together?” asked one of them. “Well, I think we should give our-selves a name so people will remember us as a group” “Sounds like a good idea. So what can we come up with?” “One thing that sticks in my mind is those brand new boots I bought when my old ones wore out from dancing for 2 hours every Friday night. They were so com-fortable. I could have danced Friday and Saturday nights and that’s why we did” “Yes” said one of the ladies, “Sally, do you remember the day all of us girls went to town to buy new slippers since ours were worn out too?” “Sure do” “That’s it! Boots & Slippers!” “Yes! Yes! Yes!” And so in August 1959 the Boots & Slippers were officially named and recognized as an organized square dance club. For 52 years they have con-tinued to dance in Simi Valley for many years on Friday, and for many more years on 2 Saturdays a month. Long since giving up the bank robbery days, the Boots & Slippers have been known to be very generous in their fund raising efforts for the Simi Valley Community Charities. They are also very visible in Simi Valley Parades and at other events where they can do a demo square dance so residents will be reminded this activ-ity is still alive and well in their home town – Simi Valley.

a free service for the clubs, but the calls coming in are practically zilch because the 800 number is not distributed with in the community any more. Since the position of the A Square D board Publicity/Promotions Chairman has not been filled for a few years and the revenue has ceased to be available, there have not been any promotional items made available to the clubs.

6.) PROVIDES LEADERSHIP, ASSISTANCE AS REQUESTED – Over time A Square D has been asked to be present and assist clubs with all different types of problems, both membership and business, including IRA audits.

7.) A SQUARE D tries to keep abreast of technology and changes with the times, i.e. use of electronic mailing versus hard copy of minutes, notices & paper work whenever possible.

President’s Message (Continued from page 1.)

Our Members:We currently have 31 clubs in our membership with over 2000 members.

High Flyers:High Flyers is an A Square D sponsored trip to the National Square

Dance Convention every year and is a fund raiser for A Square D. We go for three or four days before the Convention and have pre-arranged tours & sight seeing of the area. It is open to anybody that wants to go. We have some people that have been going every year for years & years and others that have been going some of the time for years. Our Historians, Joe & Frances Demeules have only missed one trip since it’s inception in 1963! In the past we have sometimes had a caller go with us and when we do we will have a square dance tip in a special place.

A Square D DestinyIt has been great to have a full board this year. We hope this will

encourage other club members to consider what they can do to help A Square D next year. We will need these kind of resources again next year if A Square D is to continue, as some will not be able to continue on and some of the board members that have been on the board for a lot of years will be retiring from the board because of medical/physical reasons, age, etc. It really is more fun to get involved and be active rather than sit back and let someone else do all the work and you also get to make new friends. There are a lot of club members who qualify for the elected positions of President, Vice-President & Senior Directors, having already served one or more years on the elected board in the past.

Please do not get complacent just because we filled the board for this year. This [a full contingent of board members] has to be an on going thing if A Square D is to remain in existence! And, we can’t wait until February to find out if we will have a board for the next term--so if A Square D is to survive, we need to start planning now on the outcome of the board for 2013-14. If we do not know for sure that we will have a full slate of incoming officers for the next term, A Square D will need to shut down business by the end of this calendar year. Therefore, we are going to start accepting nominations now in order to confirm an incoming slate of officers for the 2013-14 board. We will need the slate of incoming officers in place by November 1st in order to be able to count on a working board for the next term. The required mandatory election will still take place at the February General Committee Meeting. A one-year term runs from April 1st to March 31st. All board member’s need to be physically and financially able to attend monthly board meetings on the 1st Monday night and three quarterly general committee meeting’s on the 3rd Sunday in May, August & November and the 4th Sunday in February. It doesn’t do any good to take a position if you can’t be physically involved and do the job well. Being a central location, the meetings are currently being held at the Hawthorne Memorial Center. A Square D’s elected board consists of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, two Senior Director’s and one District Director for each district. See the qualifications on the back of the nomination form. Positions to be Filled:

Following is a list of ELECTED officers and a short synopsis of job descriptions:President – Shall have general supervision, direction and conduct of the business and affairs of the Corporation. Along with the monthly board meetings and quarterly general meetings, the President must be able to attend monthly district

volunteers, as there are a lot of positions to be filled. (Some board members that have been on the board for YEARS do not plan on continuing due to medical/physical conditions, age, etc.) Qualifications include being a member of an A Square D club in good standing. Appointed officers may discuss issues, but shall have no vote.

Those wishing to volunteer for appointed positions may fill out a nomination form and turn it in to me and I will see to it that it gets passed on to the incoming President. As clubs have folded in the past and the club membership has dropped, A Square D has tried to downsize and eliminated positions on the board. Sometimes the position responsibility has been dropped altogether and sometimes some or all of the responsibility has been shifted to another position making their job more of a workload. On the other hand, the more positions we can fill on the board, the more input and opinions we will have to work with. Also the more friends we make.

Ramifications of DissolutionIf A Square D does not have a board with which to operate the

association’s business and has to close down at the end of the year, clubs will then have to incorporate, apply for their own tax exempt/non-profit status, and apply for their own insurance. This takes months to achieve. Of course, clubs have had all year to do this, if this is what they really wanted to do. Or another option is to join another parent association. BUT if clubs can’t/don’t want to support A Square D, ask yourselves, is it going to be any different to support another association? Any parent association is going to expect the same type of support to exist that A Square D needs to exist.

And, I realize that our member clubs have the same problem. A Square D will be visiting a club in September for their last dance, and the reason for the club folding is that they can’t get any workers. And in relation to that, I would like to say that classes are the life blood of any club. Without classes to bring in new members to build the club and work to sustain it, the life will dwindle out of the club. The bad part of a club folding is that most of the members go independent and do not join a club. There are a lot of independent dancers out there. More food for thought – if all club members go independent and clubs dwindle, who will be organizing dances where dancers can go to dance?

And on the subject of supporting A Square D, the association really needs the support of ALL the clubs as a whole. Clubs are not supporting A Square D when they hold events and dances that directly conflict with A Square D events and dances. These events and dances are A Square D’s financial support. Dances held at the same time as the A Square D association dances, district dances, general meetings, and holding the same events as A Square D at the same time is very discouraging and gives A Square D the impression that the clubs are not concerned with supporting A Square D. The general meetings have always been on Sundays so as to not conflict with the clubs dances, but it seems some clubs don’t give A Square D the same consideration. A Square D currently has no income coming in and when clubs hold events and dance’s that conflict with anything that might bring in a little income that hurts A Square D financially. Granted that A Square D has some money to keep going for a little while, but it will not last for long without

some income coming in to supplement the draining bank account. If A Square D is to continue next year, we really do need for clubs to support A Square D dances and events.

Except for the raffle baskets and any other donations from clubs, we will not make much of anything from the Jamboree this year since, as per our agreement with Charlie Robertson in exchange for him chairing the event, A Square D will only be receiving 10% of the net profit. The Jamboree is on Labor Day week end, August 31st - September 2nd at Oxnard, with a new format. Callers will be K.O. Jeans from Texas, Matt Worley from Virginia, and Charlie. Cuers will be Phil & Sue Harris. Look for flyers with a pre-registration form. Pre-registration ends August 25th. PLEASE plan on supporting the Jamboree by attending the weekend and by clubs’ donating baskets and items for the raffle. Aside from the baskets donated by the clubs, individuals in the past have donated hand- and home-made items for the raffle. Everything is appreciated. The baskets in the past have been very nice with a lot of imagination and some were quite elaborate and the hand-made items were exquisite.

On that same note, the High Fliers managed to stay afloat with the group trip to the National Square Dance Convention to Spokane in spite of another [square dancer] group trip taking place at the same time. But there will be little if anything to add to the A Square D treasury because of it. There were two bidding cities for the 65th National Convention in 2016, Des Moines, IA, and Amarillo, TX. Des Moines won! Charleston, SC, showed announced intent to bid for the 66th National Convention in 2017, and Kansas City, MO, for the 67th National Convention in 2018.

Thank you very much for your support this year. I am looking forward to hopefully seeing the same support for the coming years ahead. Please support all the festivals and National & State Conventions. We all need to do our part in keeping this activity alive. See you in a Square!—Merlyn & Bill Jones, A Square D Presidents SQUARE DANCING IS FITNESS WHILE HAVING FUN WITH OUR FRIENDS

61st National Square Dance Convention ReportThe High Fliers had a great time in Spokane despite the fact that there were

three other conventions throughout the same week as the National Convention (of course, some of the guys didn’t mind the basketball happenings in the streets). We had a couple of days with morning mist and clouds and we had to switch our tours from last to first one day to make it to Steptoe Butte, but what an amazing view once we got there. The ride up the side of the mountain was a little scary for some of us, but we put our faith in our trusty driver and made it with no sweat. The weather couldn’t have been better for the cruise on Lake Coeur d’ Alene; it was just beautiful. Manito Park with the different botanical gardens was just gorgeous and dinner inside

The June 3rd SBWS Student Spring Fling was tons of fun and gave new dancers a chance to add to their wardrobe. See cover photo for those responsible for providing the great dance. To support our activity—support our students. Hope to see you next year!!

Fun & Games! The May 20th general meeting featured a session on Hex Squares with caller David Heffron.

Our convention hotel was really nice with refrigerators and microwaves in all our rooms and walking distance to the convention center. The convention’s final figures turned out to be 5534 dancers in attendance. Washington had 1,676 dancers, California came in second with 632, while Oregon had 447 dancers, and then Canada with 225. The convention itself was very good and we loved the

an actual steam plant was a different experience. The historic Davenport Hotel was amazing and a couple of our ladies went back for dinner during the convention and loved it. The Super Suris Alpaca Ranch was interesting and I love my alpaca shawl given to me from the group. We also added an attraction of a Gondola ride to the top of Silver Mountain. It is the longest tram ride in the world (thought we were never going to get to the top for lunch at the Mountain Haus). And ooooh, the ice
