Regional Director, UN Migration Agency (IOM) Middle East and North Africa

IOM’s Regional Ofce for the Middle East and North Africa (RO Cairo) is only few weeks away from hosting the closing ceremony of the Global Migration Film Festival (GMFF), an event that is the rst of its kind in the region and in Egypt. The organization of this important ceremony at regional level, comes only days after the Intergov-ernmental Conference on International Migration to adopt the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) that will be held in Marrakesh on 10-11 December and marks IOM’s engagement in advancing migration in policy as well as in public discourse. RO Cairo in partnership with IOM’s Mission in Egypt, and in close coordination with our partners in the Egyptian Government, will bring together a diverse group of cinematographers, cultural actors, UN partners, International Organizations, public opinion inuencers and high-prole individ-uals, in an artistic evening dedicated to migration.

It is equally important to note that starting November 28, 2018 IOM’s Missions across MENA are organizing screenings of the different movies ofcially selected for the GMFF 2018, more infor-mation can be found through this link. I seize this opportunity to invite you to enjoy read-ing the sixth edition of our regional newsletter, bringing you few of many positive stories from the region.

I wish you a pleasant reading,

The session included welcome remarks and intro-duction by Ms. Carmela Godeau, the Regional Direc-tor, followed by a plenary session on the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and updates of the UN Migration Network by Ms. Kristina Mejo,

African Migration: an Opportunity for the Conti-nent, a Responsibility for the Media

Initiated by 2M group and supported by Radio 2M, the “Panafric-aines” Forum brought together, October 26 to 28 in Casablan-ca, 200 journalists from 54 countries to discuss the theme of migration.

The Forum aims to contribute to a citizen awakening on the role and responsibilities of the media in shaping the public opinion within African communities, on the eve of the Intergov-ernmental Conference to adopt the Global Compact for Migra-tion (Marrakech, 10th and 11th of December, 2018).

Ana Fonseca, Chief of Mission of IOM Morocco, participated in the forum’s main debate “Towards an Objective Perception of Migration and Migrants”. The debate aimed to provide different points of views and arguments, contributing to a better under-standing of migration, and respect for the dignity and rights of migrants.

Displaced, but shall Return!

Ali* and his family were displaced by the clashes that erupted in Tripoli in August of 2018. He explains that if it wasn’t to protect his little ones from witnessing conicts and wars, he wouldn’t have left home. Ali and his family are therefore currently staying with a relative of his in Sidi Sayeh.

“We thought we would stay for a few nights until it is safe to go back. But when I went to check on my house I’ve found it greatly affected by the clashes. We could no longer live in it.”

He is actively trying to nd a place for his family to live independent-ly “we are guests, so we cannot stay for longer, not because our relatives are not willing to host us, but these are the conditions people are facing in the country, and everyone is going through a difcult time.”

Many families like Ali’s were displaced by the latest clashes in Tripoli. The UN Migrations Agency (IOM) Mission in Libya, with support from the European Union Trust Fund, provided humanitarian support to some of these families in Sidi Sayeh. This has allowed Ali, like many others, to start planning to return and to repair his home.

Tuberculosis in Time of Conicts

Dirbas, is an Iraqi ex-military who contracted tuberculosis (TB) when serving in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. He suffered from the disease for more than six years, during which he was treated two times, initially with drug-sensitive TB drugs and later on with MDR-TB treatment, till he nally received effective Extensively Drug Resistant (XDR-TB) medication in Jordan. At age 25, he decided to leave his family behind and seek for a treatment at Annoor Sanatorium, a small Christian medical facility in Jordan specialized on chest diseases. He was visibly ill and febrile; the medical team was very concerned, given his history, and the absence of new TB drugs in Jordan at the time. His condition continued to deteriorate. The MDR-TB treatment, failed because his drug resistance pattern had been amplied to Extensively Drug Resistant (XDR-TB). Dirbas remembers this period with sorrow as he recalls his military bunk mate who passed away with TB. In December 2016, with support from the Global Fund, IOM procured the necessary XDR-TB medications allowing Dirbas to begin his new treatment. Within one month, he tested negative on the presence of TB and in August 2018, Dirbas was declared cured from XDR-TB. He was nally able to return to Iraq and meet his family again. Dirbas suffered greatly from this disease, and unfortunately still suffers from the effects of severe lung damage due to TB.

Anbar Witnesses Rehabilitation of Homes!

After three years in displacement, Hamid’s family wanted to return to their town in Jerf Al Sakher, Babil, Iraq. But the town was still too insecure. Instead, they went to Amriyat Al Fallujah in Anbar. Although they were closer to home, Hamid and family still felt uprooted.

Thousands of other families, like Hamid’s, live in unnished or abandoned buildings in Anbar. With no resources to improve the conditions of these shelters, families are exposed to hazards and protection risks.

With support from the US Ofce of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), the UN Migration Agency (IOM) Mission in Iraq is assisting these families.

Hamid’s family lived in a rented unnished building without walls, a proper roof or windows.

“When it rained, everything inside would get muddy,” said Hamid.

The IOM shelter team built a sandwich panel roof better suited to the weather conditions and installed a toilet, doors, windows and a kitchen sink for the family.

Since October 2017, IOM has assisted 1,550 displaced families and 903 returnee families in Anbar.
