From the nurse...

Guidelines for Requesting Special Diets

The Warrick County School Corporation Food & Nutrition Department is dedicated to providing nutritious and afforda-ble meals to all WCSC students. If your child requires a special diet, we would be more than willing to accommodate your child’s needs to the best of our ability. Taking the following steps will assure that your child will receive a school meal that meets their special dietary require-ments.

Complete the “Food Allergy Action Plan” if your child has a food allergy. A copy must be sent to the school nurse’s office. The nurse will then make a copy for the school’s cafeteria manager as well as the Director of Food & Nutrition/Registered Dietitian.

Stay in touch with your school cafeteria manager.

Get to know your School Nutrition Professionals. This includes the café manager, cashiers and cooks. They take great pride in their work and have your child’s best interest at heart. We strongly encourage your child to introduce themselves to the kitchen staff.

Keep an open line of communication with the cafeteria manager via phone calls or emails.

If all documentation has been received by the cafeteria and your child is ready to receive a specialized diet or sub-stitution for lunch, you or your child should notify the cafeteria that morning by 8:00am so they can have ade-quate time to prepare the meal. Knowing in advance what days of the month your child will be eating with us will give your café manager amply time to ensure that an adequate meal substitution is available.

A Registered Dietitian, Shenae M. Rowe, is on staff and available to answer any questions you may have. You may

reach Shenae at 812-897-1341 or [email protected].

All required forms are available in each school’s cafeteria or online at www.warrick.k12.in.us. Go to the “Food/Nutrition” tab and then click on“Special Dietary Needs”.

Milk Substitutions for Non-Disability Students

The Warrick County School Corporation Food & Nutrition Department will no longer be able to offer a milk substitute for a child

with a medical or special dietary need other than a disability. The term child with a “disability” under Part B of the Individuals with

Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) means a child evaluated in accordance with IDEA as having one or more of the recognized thir-

teen disability categories and who, by reason thereof, needs special education and related services.

In Cases of Food Allergy

Generally, children with food allergies or intolerances do not have a disability as defined under either Section 504 of the Rehabilita-

tion Act or Part B of IDEA. However, when in the licensed physician’s assessment, food allergies may result in severe, life-

threatening (anaphylactic) reactions, the child’s condition would meet the definition of “disability” and the school food authority

would make necessary accommodations for that child.

Therefore, in accordance with the USDA “Milk Substitutions for Non-Disability Students” Policy, school food authorities may no

longer offer water or juice as a fluid milk substitution to students with a non-disability (i.e. lactose intolerance).

Free water is available at all schools and juice may be purchased for $0.50.

Castle High School is gearing up for the five

year AdvancED accreditation visit in

February of 2016. Look for further updates

throughout the school year! Stay informed!
