Page 1 A Message from the Principal . . . What a busy summer! We have been busy assigning new teacher class- rooms, ordering supplies, meeting with the new PTA Board and working with our awe- some building service crew to create a welcoming student learning atmosphere for your children. Mr. Quinn and I were pleased to see so many new faces at the Take a Peak at Your Seat Night and at Back to School Night. You may have noticed a few new faces as well! We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Hiner in 1st Grade, Ms. Heil and Mrs. Hosier in our Media/Technology Departments, Ms. Knepple and Ms. Pasciuto, our new Speech teachers and Ms. Hafez, our new OT. As we gear up for the month of September, I encourage all parents and guardians to go on line and complete the Volunteer Application take the Volunteer Training on line and turn both into the office. If you get it done now, you won’t have any problems in the future when you want to volunteer in the classroom or go on a field trip. We have a few new faces on our PTA board and I had the pleasure of work- ing with them over the summer to put together a calendar filled with activities and even a few fundraisers! Please join the PTA. With your paid membership you will receive an Essex calendar magnet. We need your support and your time. Be sure to “like” the Essex PTA on Facebook where you can stay current on activities. If you missed back to school night, a few FAQ’s for our new and returning parents: - Arrival time for students having breakfast is 8:40 a.m., the first bell rings at 8:45 a.m., your child is marked late after 9:00 a.m.; Dismissal is 3:22 - Please use all parking spots when coming to the school, avoid blocking teachers in and blocking other parents from entering the parking lot from Candry Terrace - We are working diligently to combat a problem of early dismissals due to our parking lot during the 3:00 - 3:15 timeframe. Many parents are coming in early, during the instructional day, to take their children out early to avoid the parking lot. We will now be asking that 3:00 is the latest time you can sign a child out for early dismis- sal. After 3:00, you must wait until the children walk out at dismissal at 3:22. If you have a doctor's note, please come before 3:00 in order for it to be an excused ab- sence. You can send the note in the following day for us to code it as well. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. - Absences and Lateness REQUIRE a note - 3:00 is the latest you can sign a child out, the teachers are preparing their students for dismissal and afternoon announcements. You MUST arrive prior to 3:10 to sign your child out - Update the office in writing when you have new phone numbers, contacts and address - Carry your i.d. with you. NURSE NEWS CORNER . . . A message from Nurse Miller

Hi Students and Parents,

There is going to be a new nurse coming to Essex Elementary!!! After 40 continuous years of nursing, 27 of which I have had the pleasure of spending here at Essex, I will be retiring September 18, 2015.

I have spent a rewarding time here at Essex, I HAVE LEARNED A LOT FROM WORKING HERE AND ESPECIALLY FROM YOUR CHILDREN. I worked very hard to help you and your children with their varied medical needs. I have also had the pleasure of meeting and working with many parents as well as other members of the Essex com-munity collaborating on shared experiences. I will take many wonderful memories with me.

Thank you for your help in taking care of your chil-dren.

STAY HAPPY AND HEALTHY, I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST!

BECOME A VOLUNTEER! BCPS VOLUNTEER TRAINING RESOURCES

Thank you for your interest in volunteering in Baltimore County Public Schools. Our schools depend on volunteers and value their contributions to enhance the programs and services provided for students. Volunteers are important members of Team BCPS and help our professional staff sustain effective learning environments, enrich the education and experi-ences of students and build critical partnerships to increase achievement for all students. Volunteers are essential to the educational process, as they bring knowledge and skills into our schools and strengthen classroom instruction. VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTIONS: Go to the BCPS Website www.bcps.org Click on the COMMUNITY tab Click on the VOLUNTEER WITH BCPS tab You can access the application on and line training as directed. All volunteers must complete the volunteer application and participate in an orientation/training session annually. Step 1: Complete the on line BCPS Application for Volunteer Services. (The school also has copies.) Step 2: Attend a scheduled BCPS volunteer training at any school or complete the online volunteer orientation. You will be provided with a certificate once you successfully complete the training. Step 3: Submit the application and the valid training certificate to the school in which you intend to volunteer. Volunteers may provide hard copies or the documents may be emailed to the school volunteer coordinator. Both docu-ments must be submitted at the same time to be accepted and reviewed by the school staff. Once the application is reviewed and training has been verified, volunteers may be placed by schools and offices ac-cording to identified needs to perform tasks that support our established goals. Goals of the BCPS Volunteer Program

* Expand parental involvement and engagement strategies to meet the unique needs of all families in the school communities. * Acknowledge parents and community members as important partners in the education of all students. * Strengthen the relationship between schools and parents, guardians and community stakeholders through meaningful service opportunities. * Support teachers and staff with the implementation of curriculum and school programs. * Utilize the knowledge and skills of volunteers to promote student achievement. * Offer direct support to students needing additional assistance with assigned tasks. * Assist school staff and students with extra-curricular activities, afterschool programs and fundraising opportunities. * Provide supervision and direction for students while participating in off-campus learning experiences (field trips).
