SLIP N’ SLIDEOur Back to School Slip N’ Slide Social was on Tuesday, September 3! We had a great turnout and everyone seemed to be excited for the upcom-ing year. Well, they were as excited as they could be about school starting again and summer being over. Big thank you to the Rocco’s for letting us use their house again for our gather-ing!

CHALK SOCIALSomething we like to do every year at the beginning of the school year is our Chalk Social. This is when we send our Key Clubbers to the breezeway outside of our school with chalk in hand with the mission to decorate our sideways in inspirational quotes. We focused on leadership and service quotes and sayings. We did this social the night of our first meeting and it was a total hit. Who doesn’t love eating food, socializing, and drawing with chalk. It is pretty much every Key Clubber’s dream

GARAGE SALEOur primary objective is to help and serve others; in order to do so, it is preferable that we have funds saved up to go toward service projects and just basic needs that make a club suc-cessful. Our first project this year in which all proceeds benefited Nacog-

doches Key Club was out first annual garage sale on Saturday, September 21. The garage sale lasted from 8 AM until 12 PM. Per the donations collected from members’ families, teachers at the high school, and community members, we were able to raise over $200 for our club. Thanks to everyone that donated time on Fri-day to help set up for the garage sale and everyone who generously gave up their Saturday morning to make sure it ran smoothly! You guys are the best!

STADIUM CLEANUPFollowing our big home game WINS during the month of September, we were at the stadium bright and early to help clean up! This is a big task but can be knocked out fairly quick the more people that show up to help! Pictured below are those who attended the September 14th Sta-dium Cleanup following our 28-24 win against Lufkin! This was our first victory against the Panthers in 21 years, so it is a big deal. That group includes Brittiani Phillips, McKenna Skeeters, Jordan Palmer, Lexie Rocco, Tori Dang, Kassidy Arnold, and Yoa-na Lopez! Our next Stadium Cleanup will be the morning after the Home-coming game against Pinetree on Sat-urday, October 5. I know Saturday is a hectic day for everyone, but it would be great if you could consider coming out for even thirty minutes!

You can find the good in everybody, if you just give them

a chance, the benefit of the doubt.

Sometimes people disappoint

you, sometimes they surprise you but you never really get to

their hearts. -One Tree Hill

TAILGATEOn September 27, National Hon-or Society hosted a Tailgate Social prior to the Hallsville football game, encouraging all the clubs and organi-zations on Nacogdoches High School campus to come out and have a great time. It was a great opportunity to spread the Key Club name as well as interact with different organizations. Plus, we were serving hot dogs and handing out glow sticks. Who doesn’t love free food? Big thanks to the Per-ry’s for allowing us to borrow a truck from their dealership!

FALL RALLYMother Nature never seems to be on our side when Fall Rally rolls around, but that did not stop Nac Key Club from enjoying our (short) time spent at Six Flags! Our day started at opening session where we learned the 2014 T-O Key Club DCON theme, “Get Hooked On Service,” inspired by none other than Peter Pan. Imme-diately after we were separated into teams: Team Hook or Team Pan. We are so excited about this year’s DCON that will be in Dallas at the Sheraton Hotel on April 24-27. After Opening session concluded, we got to enjoy the rest of our day at Six Flags. While we only got to ride two roller coasters, we rode the teacups so it was worth it. Even though we got soaked, we still had a blast!

UPCOMINGDuring October, our major project will be Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF! It is a great cause that we are very passionate about. In addition to the collection boxes in advisory rooms, this year we will be actually going out and TRICK-OR-TREATING! Excit-ing, right? We will be separating into teams, each team having a costume theme, and the winning group will get a special reward! To maximize our donation to UNICEF, we will also be having a mini fall festival featuring the main event of PUMPKIN SMASH. Please remember to bring pumpkins for hours in order to make this event a success! Be sure to pay close atten-tion to the calender in this newsletter because there are a ton more events that you will not want to miss!

SET SAILWe have had a very busy month of September and October looks just as busy. Remember that in order to be an official member of Key Club, you will need to have paid your $15 of dues by October 15, 2013! Also, the club t-shirts are $10 and we will be placing a second order so get your money in! October is on the horizon and, if you haven’t already, there is not better time to SET SAIL WITH SERVICE!

GROUP COMMUNICATION

“When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.” Every other Thursday in Key club class, we have an exciting class we call “group.” In group, we get together with about 10 to 12 kids that are underdeveloped or have special needs. These amazing children look forward to group every week. To know that we make such an awesome effect in their lives makes my heart smile. The first time I ever experienced group, I was paired with a bubbly, red-head girl who just popped right in the door with a huge smile on her face. I called her over and told her she could sit right by me. Shortly after, we began talking. She told me all about herself, her family, likes, dislikes, and possibly everything you could need to know about a person. We then started on an activity where you have to get other people in the classroom to sign your paper. This would help the kids on their social skills and also so that we could all get to know each other better. My bright, also by now I found out competitive, new friend pulled me over and said “Were going to win this! We have to!” Sadly, we did not win, but we did have a lot of fun. After that Thursday, I started seeing my new energetic friend all around school. Whenever she saw me, her face would brighten up and I could see the sparkle in her big blue eyes. It was so heart-warming to see her and how excited she was to see me. I am always greeted with a huge hug, and then I go on to ask her about her day, as she does the same for me. Seeing her mostly everyday now, even just for a few seconds in the hall, makes my day. I believe that it is extremely important to be kind and caring for those who are not as privileged as us. Kids all over the world that have these issues are beaten down and torn apart daily for being the way they are. They cause us no harm, they do no wrong. They are just ordinary people like you and me. Building relation-ships with these students in our group makes me realize that there is so much to be thankful for and that we just need to be happy. To me, the girl I made a friendship with inspires me to be a better person and I hope she inspires you too.

ESL

Don’t you have a curiosity when you see new people in the environment that you are always in? The way they look, their personality, or what their interests may be? At Nacogdoches High School, Key Club par-ticipates in a social gathering with a diversity of children from different countries. We call them the ESL kids. ESL stands for English as a Second Language. These kids have come from a variety of different places, such as Burma, Thailand, and Mexico. They originally speak their native language and can barely understand English, which is the official language in America. We keep this program running by helping them adapt to the new school each week. We play volleyball, basketball, help them with their studies, and talk to them about day to day things. This program impacts the students by helping them with their English, social skills, and study hab-its. The ESL program impacts me by making me realize how good it is to give back and help people. Doing whatever I can to make anyone’s day, brightens my day even more. It’s the feeling of pride because you’ve done something good for someone else. It impacts the world because if one person helps someone in need, it can cause a chain reaction and can inspire others to act selflessly as well. If everybody is doing something good, we will be making the world a better and friendlier place, one act of kindness at a time. It impacts the other per-son such as the ESL kids because they get feedback from students that have lived in America for their whole lives. Learning to speak, talk, and write English helps the kids adapt to their new lifestyle. Key Club usually visits the ESL kids every Wednesday. We do so much with them to help them in life, and school. We always get good feedback that the ESL kids are so happy to see us and that we brighten up their day. The ESL program is important because it shows how students from another country can improve their life skills simply by interacting with students that have been in America for most of their lives. Whether we are helping them with English by writing, speaking, or anything we can do, hopefully we are making a last-ing impact that will benefit them throughout life. Key club is giving back to the community by helping these Burmese, Mexican, and Thailand kids meet new people while improving their English. It’s a good feeling to know that you are helping someone by the simplest things. There’s a Chinese proverb that says, “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” The treasure that we are giving them is a friendship by making their transition into a totally new country as smooth as possible.
