Tiger Community,
The school year is off to a fantastic start. The students have returned with a
lot of energy and they are ready to learn.
Our iPad rollout events were very successful. We are very excited about this
technology for Erie Middle School. The teachers will be able to enhance and enrich
the learning within their classes by using this devise.
Thanks to everyone who attended the New Family Orientation Night and our
Back to School Night events. They were all well attended. If you would like to tour
the school please let me know and I can make arrangements.
A special thanks to the 8th grade WEB leaders. They came to school a few
days early for a training to assist the 6th graders feel welcome at Erie Middle School.
This fantastic program they put on helped the 6th graders transition into Erie Middle.
Thanks to the parents for bringing these leaders into school early and the WEB staff
who trained them. The 6th grade students had a fun and educational first day with
our WEB team.
Our annual Magazine fundraiser kicked off on Thursday August 27th and will
run until Tuesday September 9th. Last year money was raised to support and enhance
classroom supplies and materials. We appreciate all the support and participation
that have given us the opportunity to provide high quality education to our Erie Middle
School students. The participation of the entire Erie Middle School Community will
make the magazine sales a success.
We have many exciting events planned for this school year. From concerts to
clubs to athletic events, there are many ways for students to be involved at school.
We encourage all students to become active members of the Erie Middle School
Community. To stay current with the events at Erie Middle School please visit our
webpage and Facebook site.
Volleyball and Cross Country are getting started. Coaches and athletes are
busy preparing themselves for the upcoming games.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Role of a Middle School Counselor Middle school is a very difficult time for most students. It is a time of personal exploration, a time to
seek out one's own identity, and physiologically a time of rapid growth. Coupled together, these two
attributes of the middle school aged student produces much insecurity and fear.
The middle school counselor provides expertise in establishing program development, design of pro-
gram implementation, and evaluation of everything from large scale education programs to dealing with
particular ailing individuals.
Typical middle school counseling involves assessments of current situations in school, in particular
programs and in the individual. The goals are to create an environment where each and every student is
able to find confidence in themselves and believe in their own competence as learners.
Middle School Counseling Services Middle school counselors provide support and services in a variety of ways. In the educational
environment, the middle school counselor will provide academic skills support, study and test-taking
skills, and will occasionally discuss career options even though students may be years away from
stepping out on their own. Career planning has proven to be a successful motivator for many school
counselors.
In the student management areas, middle school counselors will provide information about coping
strategies for students who have undergone some element of stress or tragedy. They will also aid in the
development of students' abilities to create positive peer relationships.
A difficult problem for any parent or educator of middle school students is the fact that during this age,
many students begin relying more heavily on other students for guidance and acceptance than parents.
Therefore, helping create strong decision-making abilities is a high priority for middle school
counselors.

A note from the Health Clerk’s desk:
Many, many thanks for ALL the generous donations for the Health Office. We are stocked!
We appreciate your effort in updating your student’s immunizations and bringing in the updated
immunization records. Now the process begins of entering over 200 records. Thank you for
your patience.
We will continue to collect updated immunization records as well as Food Allergy Plans, Asthma
Care Plans and medication WITH medication forms. All medication and health forms must be
signed by a doctor AND a parent / guardian.

Physician needs to fill out AND sign a Permission for Medication form – please stop by Erie
Middle School to pick up a blank form or ask your student to stop by the Health Office.
A parent / guardian needs to sign the form.
The medication name & dosage must match the form. NO EXCEPTIONS.
When you are ready to turn forms into the school, here are the options:

Attendance Policy
One criteria of a student’s success in school is regular and punctual attendance. Fre-
quent absences may lead to poor academic work, lack of social development and pos-sible academic failure. Regular attendance is of utmost importance for student inter-
est in school, social adjustment, and scholastic achievement, particularly for closing the achievement gap. Students who have good attendance generally achieve higher
grades, enjoy school more, and are more employable after leaving school. BOE poli-cies JH and JH-R outline the attendance policies for the SVVSD.
Excused absences
The building principal or designee will grant excused absences with substantiated rea-sons as outlined in BOE policy JH. At EMS communication about attendance is of the
utmost importance to us and as a result we will abide by the following:
At three days of excused absence the parents of a student will receive a letter from the school notifying them of the absences
At six days of excused absence a second letter will be sent home
At nine days of excused absence a third letter will be send and we may call to set
up a meeting with the parents to discuss attendance
Unexcused Absences
According to BOE policy JH and JH-R the minimum number of unexcused absences a
student may incur before judicial proceedings are initiated to enforce compulsory at-tendance is four days in one month or ten days during any school year.
