THE MESSENGER 3PATCH HOLES OR BAIL WATER

I remember my early days of sobriety and how everything was bigger than life. I felt very safe but vig-ilant as I started to move through this process, with the help of several, more experienced members. I was some-what naïve at the time and I got my first dose of reality when my first sponsor showed up at the meeting drunk as a skunk. A week later, after he returned, he explained that everything was going fine, when he caught a cold and took a teaspoon of cough syrup, not knowing that it had alcohol in it, and he was off to the races as the obsession took over and, yada, yada, yada. I was devastated, so I ran to another seasoned veteran in the program, Silent Bob, and asked him if it was that fragile; was it that easy to have a slip? Bob replied in his own way of saying things, pointing to his head, then to his stomach respectively, he replied, “You gotta get drunk up here before ya kin get drunk down there”. That explained it to me in words that I could un-derstand. It’s important to be vigilant, when it comes to abstaining from alcohol, when we are new in the program and if we embrace the principles that we learn here, our vigilance will evolve into our thinking process. For the most part, relapse is not an accident. Most people, that I know, in the program, speak of having drinking dreams when early in sobriety and this, I think, and is normal. It happened to me as my mind hadn’t been that far from those drinking experienc-es. As I put the bottle further and further into the past, they became less and less frequent, and now I can’t even remember when I last had one. My mind is not consumed with drinking activities now, but is focused on healthy life experiences and I have put layer upon layer of vigilance between me and the thought of taking a first drink. Most people that relapse often say that the first thing that went wrong was that they stopped going to meetings. I believe that what first happens is that meetings, in our minds, become less and less important to us. It starts with our thinking. If I get to the point, in my mind, where a drink starts to look good to me again it’s a pretty good sign that I am not convinced that I’m powerless over alcohol and that it’s going to be different this time. I can’t be judgmental about it when that happens to a person. He or she may not be ready yet. I can only be prepared to welcome him or her back, when they return, and always with an understanding heart. I have spent most of my life on or around the water where I have seen these small aluminum boats. I picture one with a hundred little pin holes in its hull. A guy is fishing, and every so often, he stops to bail the water out of the bilge. As new holes appear the more time he spends bailing and less time fishing. These holes are like my defects of character and the water in the bilge are the shortcomings. My thinking comes before my actions. My vigilance today is focused on the day to day issues of my life and my motives for how I handle those issues. I can become willing to patch those little holes, one at a time, or I can spend the rest of my life bailing water, and risk sinking altogether. Today, my boat is high and dry, the fishing is great, and so is life. Rick R.

THE MESSENGER 5AT MY AGE

Sober twenty-seven years, an AA hits some bumps in the roadA little over a year ago, I was fired from my last job as a drug and alcohol counselor at a well-established treatment center. I was devastated: anger, frustration and denial were in full force as I was ushered out the door. I had been fired from the previous two positions I had held, and this was the charm! I felt worthless, bewildered and belittled. I felt that something was terribly wrong, but I couldn’t persuade anyone to listen to me. At my AA group, all I got was a well-meant suggestion to take the Third Step. After 27 years of sobriety, I deserved better treatment than this, I thought. I progressed in some sort of sickness that neither my wife nor I could pin down. I thought I was just depressed, and I had always found that one more meeting pretty well takes care of my depression. But not this time. I sank deeper and deeper and, finally, began to think suicidally, screaming to myself, “They’II all be sorry when I’m gone.” As a last resort, I went to the hospital for evaluation. While I was in the hospital, with my wife present and supportive through every single moment of the ordeal, I had both a stroke and a heart attack. The heart attack was the easier to deal with. The stroke, however, was a complete surprise to me, like nothing I had ever experienced. When I had recovered sufficiently, I was sent home with instructions that I was to be evaluated by a specialist. Upon following through, I was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. My team of doctors ordered me not to seek employment. I became officially “disabled.” This was never supposed to happen to me! I came from a family filled with doctors and lawyers. I was a championship debat-er in college and a coach of national championship debaters. I had financed my way through college and graduate school on academic scholarships. I owned a computer programming business and had completed law school after staying sober for three years. I’d returned to teaching and become a school principal. Then, when I had gotten tired of teaching, I was certified as an alcoholism and drug counselor. Now, I could never work again. Ever! Was this fair? Was this a part of the deal? Was I now relegated to a life of being “stupid, boring and glum”? I had a very difficult time reconciling my new status as terminally ill with my own mental self-image as “superman.” My wife tried to reassure me, my group listened patiently, and ultimately I got very tired of trying to “figure it all out.” The last time I had felt this lost and alone was when I’d sobered up. I had been arrested in Lafayette, Louisiana, and strapped down in an isolation room until the police could figure out what to do with me. I knew as certainly as I know that I am typing these words that I heard the voice of my Higher Power clearly and distinctly saying, “Now are you willing to let me do this for you?” And since that moment, the moment I answered, “Yes,” I had never--until now--questioned the will of God in my life. Was this fair? Was I now relegated to a life of being “stupid, boring and glum?” I have been praying to that voice that I heard 27 years ago. I have also started getting phone calls from newcomers, who ask how they can possible stay sober with everything going on in their lives. I recognize the anger and fear in their words, but realize they are trying to follow directions, just like me. They’ve mirrored back to me my own insecure fears and that has actually been helping me physicians’ medical advice. It took a long time for me to finally come back to the Third Step, as had been suggested when I first lost my job, but I’m grateful I did. It’s not such a bad thing to have no answers. It’s just a little scary. Jim L., Newton, KS

AMENDS

“Though the variations were many, my main theme was always “how godawful I am?” Just as often exaggerated my modest attainments by pride, so I exaggerated my defects through guilt. I would race about, confessing all (and a great deal more) to whoever would listen. Believe or not, I took this widespread exposure of my sins to be great humility on my part, and considered it a great spiritual asset and consolation? But later on I realized at depth that the great harms I had done others were not truly regreted. These episodes were merely the basis for storytelling and exhibitionism.” Bill W.
