GI Joes and Barbies We Are Not!By L. Hudge
Tips for a Positive Body Image*
It’s funny how things happen in your life for a reason. As a little girl I loved scary movies but I didn’t like the awful nightmares that sometimes followed. My mother told me one night that when I have these dreams I am in charge. She told me that I can invent whatever I need to get away from the monsters. Every since then I have been in control of my dreams. In 2000 I had this vivid dream and every night for one week it continued to play out. I told a friend of mines this crazy coincidence and at her urging I started to write it all down. I was consumed with writing that story and so many more. Before I knew it I was enrolled in a creative writing class at Wayne State University, where I would later receive my double Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Sociology. After a few years I was plagued with Writer’s Block I couldn’t find my voice outside of a few pages. I was tempted to quit trying when on a new job I found my voice again but it was nothing like before. I had so many dreams to revisit and get down on paper that since then I have written three full contemporary love stories and several short stories. I am studying to be a registered nurse but the writer in me is fighting to be heard or read I should say.
