Continued from coverFun for all the family The hall was filled with smiles and laughter as the children were rewarded with small prizes including chocolate bars, jelly beans and other goodies. Once the morning’s activities were completed, the hotel kindly served refreshments and a tasty brunch for everyone in preparation for a pleasant walk through Kensington Palace Gardens where families had the chance to enjoy the weather and nature.

Shambhu commented on the great day:

“It was great family event in partnership with Starlight and supported by Hilton in the Community Foundation. I am very proud to be part of the event and thanks to HCF and Starlight for their support and inspiration, we could put smiles the children’s faces. And thanks to those who participated and made donations towards the charity raffle, which was a huge success.”

At the end of the day the families left the event knowing that not only had they all throroughly enjoyed themselves, they had also helped to support HCF and Starlight Children’s Foundation, a wish granting charity for terminally ill children, by raising over £400.

Hilton Dresden goes Around the WorldOn 10th August, Hilton Dresden was proud to host one of the final Around the World in a Day events of the year and with the support of their Team Members and guests, the day was a great success. Delayed due to flooding earlier in the year, participants were able to clock up 725 kilometres from rowing machines and exercise bikes on Bruhl’s Terrace and they were kept in motion for over six hours with energetic team members collecting kms in shifts.

For those that wanted to take to the streets to work up a sweat and collect kms, Hilton Dresden had also organised two guided runs for team members and their families and for those favouring a more environmentally friendly commute to work were able to track their kms if they travelled to work by bike.

Not only did everyone collect lots of kms, the day also raised €1,329 with management at Hilton Dresden generously donating €1 per 1km collected. In addition, the hotel had also organised various games for the public to pay to enter, including penalty shoot outs and can knockdowns.

Well done to all that helped to organise and participate in the event. The raised funds will be donated to their charity partner, Epilepsiezentrum Kleinwachau, a charity that treats and cares for children and young people with epilepsy and disabilities.

Team Members at Hilton Dresden clocked up kms on rowing machines and exercise bikes.

Helping young people return to school

Far left: In 2012, Team Members at Hilton Warick bravely took part in a skydive to fundraise. Left: Joanne Wilson, Foundation Champion at Hilton Warick has always been keen to help the local community through fundraising and volunteering.

Hilton Warwick/ Stratford-upon-Avon has awarded Northleigh House School with a donation of £2,000 to support their work with children and young people that have experienced bullying in mainstream schools.

The money was raised by Hilton Warwick throughout 2012 through various fundraising initiatives, including skydiving and races.

Northleigh House School was established in 2012 to address the growing need for a safe, calm and progressive learning environment for secondary aged children who, mainly as a result of being bullied or perceiving themselves to have been so, cannot study in a large mainstream setting.

Joanne Wilson, PA to Hotel Manager and Foundation Champion for Hilton Warwick commented on the donation:

“This is such a worthwhile cause which is very relevant at the moment when you watch the news and hear such sad stories of bullying. I hope this can go some way to helping Northleigh in the fantastic work they do.”

Northleigh House School puts its students, who have experienced traumas that would leave them emotionally vulnerable in mainstream schools, at the heart of their learning experience focussing on academic, social and emotional development designed around each student’s interests and needs.

One student at Northleigh House School commented on her experience at the School:

“I’ve only been at Northleigh for a few weeks now and I can honestly say it is one of the most friendly environments I’ve ever encountered.”

Encouraging peer learning and supportOne of HCF’s core themes for its central grants is homelessness. There are a number of approaches taken to alleviate this issue for young people, working in partnership with specialist charities. We support prevention and awareness work, emergency accommodation and shelter, training and employment programmes.

One partner in Nottingham, UK, is Broxtowe Youth Homelessness (BYH), which works to prevent homelessness, raises awarenes of the issues surrounding homelessness, offers emergency assistance to those in need and organises training and volunteering opportunities for young people who have experienced homelessnes.

In 2012 a grant of £9,000 helped BYH to continue to offer its Peer Impact programme for young people living in supported housing. Throughout the year, BYH peer educators played a vital role in the organisations work to prevent youth homelessness.

Lucy, a peer educator recruited onto the programme in September 2012 talks about how the programme has helped her:

Lucy, 18“I’m Lucy and I’ve been volunteering with BYH since they came to my hostel last September. At the time my confidence was at an all time low through the shock of ending up homeless and living in the hostel as well as my existing mental health problems being aggravated by the upheaval I’d gone through.

Honestly if BYH hadn’t taken the time to visit and bring work in for me to study at my own pace I wouldn’t be as involved with the project as I am now. The trouble is I struggle quite badly with meeting new groups of people and being in places I don’t know. It can be very frustrating as it means I end up missing out on things that I’d love to be involved with.

Being a Peer Educator and doing the school sessions has helped give me so much of my lost confidence back and feel more like the person I used to be before my mental health problems and homelessness. Standing up in a classroom full of teenagers isn’t easy but knowing I can do that and share sometimes pretty painful parts of my life makes me feel like I can tackle anything. Also it’s encouraged me to flip my experiences on its head and see them as events that could potentially help another young person make the right choices and not go through the things I’ve had to.

My future is pretty exciting now as I’m shortly leaving the hostel and moving into a house share with my friends, it feels like leaving home all over again complete with that butterflies in the stomach feeling. Even more exciting than that though is I’ve been accepted to study “Working with Children, Young People and Families” at Newman University in Birmingham. Without building my confidence back up through peer education I think even filling in the application forms for university would have been too daunting, I didn’t feel like I had anything much to offer anyone. All that’s changed now I can’t wait to start my course and get that little bit closer towards my dream of working with disadvantaged children and young people. I want to help others realise their true potential regardless of the circumstances they have grown up in.”

2013 HCF soccer cupHilton Nuremberg kicked off this month’s fundraising in style, with their second Hilton in the Community Foundation Soccer Cup, which ran from 2nd-4th August with a total of ten different teams from across Europe signing up to the 2-daye tournament. Hotels represented by a football team for this event included Hilton Mainz, Hilton Dresden, Hilton Munich City, Hilton Munich Park, Hilton Paris Charles De Gaulle and Hilton Nuremberg. PSAV, Landkreiskicker Nuremberg, Radisson Blu Bremen and the Arvena Hotel also entered teams in hope that they could take the cup home with them.

Wasting no time after the participants’ arrivals, a group draw was organised, giving teams the chance to meet their competition and find out who they would be facing the next day. After going through the rules of the match, everyone relaxed on Hilton Nuremberg’s lounge terrace.

The following morning, everyone met up at the front of the hotel equipped with balloons and banners and braced themselves for the matches ahead. The showdown began at 10:30am, with the first matches taking

place between Hilton Nuremberg vs Hilton Dresden and Hilton Munich City vs Hilton Munich Park. After a competitive day where some great football skills were displayed by all teams, everyone headed back to the host hotel for a Chill n Grill, giving the players and their friends and families the chance to get to know one another and let their hair down before the final day of football.

Sunday saw a thrilling climax ro the tournament and after the quarter finals Hilton Mainz, Hilton Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport, PSAV and Hilton Nuremberg had all made it to the semi finals. All the teams teams really stepped up to the challenge and the crowds were all very excited during the matches which saw Hilton Mainz beat PSAV and Hilton Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport win their match against Hilton Nuremberg.

With the finalists decided, both teams braced themselves for a difficult match. In the end, Hilton Mainz ended up being the team that could proudly lift the trophy after a challenging final, which saw both teams go head to head in a penalty shoot out - a very tense moment for footballers and supporters alike.

Thanks to everyone’s hard work, great sportsmanship and support, Hilton Nuremberg was proud to announce that their soccer cup had raised €5,000 for Allgemeinen Sozialen Notdienst Nuremberg, an organisation that provides counselling and support for disadvantaged children and young people.

Treasure for charity at peddlers market Throughout August, Team Members at Hilton Vienna decided to kill two birds with one stone whilst clearing out the hotel’s stewarding storage rooms - have a market to help find new owners for the various items that are no longer needed and raise money for a great charity in the process.

For two days, the hotel hosted a Peddler’s Market which was organised by four proactive Team Members at the hotel. Along with old bric a brac that the hotel no longer needed, Team Members also rummaged around their homes in search of belongings that they no longer needed or used in order to sell to the public.

The market was very popular with the local community, after the public quickly discovered that they could find great bargains for a good price and in total, €616.25 was raised for their charity partner, Sterntalerhof, a charity that cares for families with seriously, chronically and terminally ill children.

In addition to raising funds for their local charity partner, Hilton Vienna is also working hard to educate their guests with Hilton Backstage. By opening up the “backstage” of the hotel to guests where they can participate in different classes, Team Members are hoping they can share their passion for great hospitality with their guests.

Recent classes have included “SHAKE IT”, where guests can learn how to make mouth-watering cocktails, “COOK IT”, designed for those aspiring to be culinary geniuses and “TASTE IT” a session which bring selected wines and Austrian tapas together during a fun tasting sessions.

Waste not, want notNot wanting to waste anything that may be of value to others, last year, Hilton Milan decided to donate their old cookery equipment to their local charity partner, Farsi Prossimo. Farsi Prossimo is an organisation that is committed to providing support to women that have been victims of people trafficking and facilitates their integration into society.

This year, with the delivery of their brand new refrigerators and ovens, Hilton Milan decided to repeat the gesture and donate their old equipment to Farsi Prossimo, which not only benefits the environment, but will also help their charity partner with their M’ama Food programme that helps socially excluded women to gain training within the hospitality industry which will enable them to find sustainable employment in the future.

It takes a lot of motivation, hard work and effort to train for a marathon or run to support a charity that is close to your heart and Roz Fullylove, Hilton Newscastle Gateshead, decided to show her support for LAM Action by participating in five challenging events which will total approximately 96.4 miles.

After finding out that a colleague was diagnosed with a very rare lung condition which progressively erodes lung function called lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), Roz decided that she had to do something to help her friend. Throughout 2013 Roz has decided that she will take part in five different events to raise funds for LAM Action, an organisation that provides support to LAM patients and their families.

Kicking off her fundraising in April with the Brighton marathon, Roz has since also participated in a 1500m swimathon and The Ridgeway 40 (a 40 mile walk that must be completed in under 15 hours). In September, Roz will also take part in The Great North Run followed by the Amsterdam Marathon in October.

Roz commented on her very active 2013:

“Even at my age I know my mum and sister will worry about me yet again pushing myself to complete various events, but I also hope they will be proud of me. I urge you to give what you can as every penny that is donated will urge me on when I am feeling I can’t go on.”

So far, Roz has raised over £600 for LAM Action through Hilton in the Community Foundation. If you wish to sponsor Roz as she powers through her final races of the year, click here.

Five races in one year for LAM Action

Racing for LauraLynnTo many people, adventure racing can seem a little daunting, but John Mooney, Night Manager, Hilton Dublin Airport pounced at the opportunity to take part in Gaelforce West, the largest one day adventure race in Europe.

Starting on a crescent-shaped white sandy beach in the early morning light, John made his way through 67km of the most demanding and magnificent areas of Connemara and Mayo in aid of LauraLynn Children’s Hospice and was able to raise over €1,200. LauraLynn is the charity partner for Hilton Dublin, Hilton Dublin Airport and Conrad Dublin.

John Commented on his

involvement in the race:

“The race was fantastic to have competed in and was easily the toughest physical thing I have ever done. I am delighted to have raised over €1,200 for the charity and hope to do some similar events in the future”

At the end of August, Team Members from Hilton Berlin were delighted to visit their charity partner, Die Teupe for a summer festival and to present them with a gift basket and cheque for €1,000 following their successful Around the World in a Day event.

Die Teupe works with disadvantaged and homeless children and young people and aims to reintegrate them into society.

Climbing a landmark in LondonMost people head to London’s O2 for concerts, large scale events or a nice dinner, but the Conference and Events Sales team at London Hilton on Park Lane had something else in mind when they decided to raise funds at the O2.

On 13th August the team rocked up to the O2 but instead of walking into the building they walked straight over it. Reaching Heights of 52 metres with the wind blowing and 360 degree views of London, climbing across the roof of the O2 is not for those that are scared of heights.

Thomas Spruijt, Assistant Business manager of Conference and Sales, commented on the experience:

“We really enjoyed the climb and the view and we hope the money that we’ve raised will make a good contribution to the cause.”

The team have been able to raise over £600 for HCF Nordoff Robbins, a music charity that is dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable children and adults across the UK. Through music therapy and other music services, Nordoff Robbins supports a range of people with various challenges such as autism, dementia, stroke and depression.

If you’re interested in supporting the team’s work with Nordoff Robbins, you can visit their Justgiving page to make a donation.

Lending a helping hand With this year’s Global Week of Service on the horizon, Team Members from Hilton Worldwide International Division at Maple Court decided to revisit one of the local residents that they had helped during last year’s event.

A small group of green-fingered Team Members revisited Edna, a local elderly resident who needed some help tidying up her garden last year. This year, they returned to help Edna maintain her beautiful garden and refresh it with some new flowers and help with the weeding.

At the end of the day, everyone sat down with Edna for a nice cup of tea and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon in the garden and Edna was very grateful for everyone’s hard work.

At the weekend, 20 Team Members from Hilton Worldwide’s RMCC Division at Maple Court organised and took part in a 22 mile walk across London. The walk saw them visit 22 DoubleTree and Hilton Hotels & Resorts across London. In the process, they raised funds for Hilton in the Community Foundation by collecting sponsorship money.

Taking on the Race for LifeWell done to Sandra Coelho, Demi Chef de Partie and Foundation Champion, Hilton London Docklands Riverside who braved rain and mud to participate in the Race for Life in Hyde Park on 14th July.

Fundraising through Hilton in the Community Foundation to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, Sandra was able to raise over £100 to help young people affected by cancer. If you wish to show your support for Sandra, click here.

Helping children with EBFollowing a successful Around the World in a Day event, Hilton Vienna, Hilton Vienna Danube, Hilton Vienna Plaza and Hilton Innsbruck were delighted to present Debra Austria with a cheque for €8,000.
