It has been a great pleasure to welcome all staff and students back to a new and

exciting school year after the long summer break. And what a successful summer it has

been for the students, staff and school! Our exam results are the best ever and I want to

start by sharing a brief outline of those with you here:

A Level:

• Students achieved a 98% A - E pass rate;

• 23 out of 24 subjects achieved 100% A - E grade pass rate;

• 50% of the students obtained A / B passes in their subjects;

• Students achieved 100% A - C pass rate in 13 subjects;

• Students achieved 100% A - B pass rate in 6 subjects.

We were also extremely proud of the following students:

• Laurence Hookway and Helen Finegan achieved 4 A grades;

• Nicola Butcher, Eleanor Dunn, Hannah Rowe and Rosie Pearce achieved 3 A

grades.

At GCSE:

• 59% of 160 students achieved 5+ A*-C grades – a 3% rise on our adjusted figure of

56% from last year;

• The number of students achieving 5+ A*-C grades with English and Maths is 48%: a

20% rise on last year’s results.

There were some exceptional results from the following students:

• Claire Downs and Emily Rowe – 11 A*/A grades each;

• Alex Leigh-Pearson – 10 A*/A grades;

• Hannah Butcher and Aline Porteous – 9 A*/A grades each;

• William Tink – 8 A* grades.

We are also incredibly proud that 99% of students achieved at least one A*-G grade

and 94% of students achieved at least 5 or more A*-G grades. Deben High School has a

fully comprehensive intake and is proud of the achievements of all of our students.

At Key Stage 3:

Teacher Assessment results for the core subjects:

• English L5+ (83%) and L6+ (42%)

• Maths L5+ (79%) and L6+ (57%)

These results show rises in the numbers of students achieving at higher levels.

Parents/Carers

Don’t forget there are many ways to get involved in the school this year. Why not join us

on the following dates:

• Parents’ Focus Group – 5.30-6.30 – first meeting 30 September 2009 – contact Mrs

Cumberland (Head’s PA) on [email protected] to get on the list;

• Open mornings – come and look around the school – week beginning 19

October. More details will follow on this.

Also we are trialling our new Parents’ Open Forum meetings this term! Three dates have

been allocated for parents/carers to come in and have a cup of tea and have the

chance to ask any questions they may have about the school. The only agenda is

yours. The dates for these are:

• 17 September 2009

• 1 October 2009

• 15 October 2009

All meetings start at 8.30 and last for around an hour. Please report to the main

reception to be directed to the where the meeting takes place.

Staffing Changes

The following members of staff will begin new posts this term:

• Mr M Craven – Subject leader: KS3 Science;

• Mrs C Allsop – Teacher of Art/DT;

• Mr M Watson – Teacher of MFL;

• Mr D Rance – Cover Supervisor;

• Mrs G Read – Cover Supervisor.

Staff taking up promoted posts this term:

• Mr T Hawkridge – Subject Leader: Physics;

• Mr J Rawling - Professional Tutor;

• Mr D James - Head of Sixth Form;

• Mrs S D’Silva - Curriculum Leader: Technology and Life Skills.

Welcome back to Mrs E Cobain after her maternity leave and good luck to Mrs A May,

Mrs G Nevler and Mrs J Macdonald-Fawcett with their new roles in school.

We also say a goodbye to Mrs L Jackaman who has left the role of Art Technician. I

would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her work last year and wish her the

very best of luck for her new role.

The 3 ‘P’s

This academic year we are to focus on the 3 ‘P’s to continue to improve aspirations and

achievement:

Pride focuses on the new uniform, improving the school building and increasing student

responsibility around school and in the community;

Progress focuses on helping students and their parents/carers on understanding their

targets and how to get there throughout the year. We start with Target Setting Day

(formerly Tutor Review Day) in October and parents/carers will now receive 5 progress

reports throughout the year instead of just the one. More details to follow;

Performance is there to ensure that we focus not only on the aspirations and

achievements of students and staff, but also that we create the best climate for that to

happen in school. We will do a great deal of work this year on continuing to ensure the

hard work we have started so far on improving mental and physical well-being carries

on.

My thanks to the following people:

• Deben site staff who have worked so hard over the summer to remodel and

refurbish so many areas of the school to make it a more welcoming place to be;

• all parents/carers who have purchased the new uniform and have started the

year off so well. To see our students arrive so smartly and ready to learn was

wonderful on Monday! Long may it continue!

You will find a copy of the new poster we are putting around school containing this

year’s Year 11 targets in this edition of the Deben News. We are aiming as high as

possible with 70% of our students being targeted for 5 or more A*-C grades and 58%

with English and Maths. Please look out for letters which are being sent to some

parents/carers inviting you to a special evening designed to show how you can help

support your sons/daughters to achieve in their examinations from home.

It only remains for me to say: have a great start to the new term!

Mr Cawley

Deben High School is hosting three seminars in October led by Donna Berry from

the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. The seminars are aimed

primarily at Year 7 parents but parents of all year groups are welcome to

attend.

The three Ps in ‘Triple P’ stand for ‘Positive Parenting Programme’. Triple P helps

you understand the way your family works and uses the things you already think,

feel, say and do in new ways that nurture relationships, parenting skills and

confidence, as well as supporting your wellbeing.

Triple P helps you:

• Create a stable, supportive, harmonious family environment.

• Teach your children the skills they need to get along with others.

• Deal positively, consistently and decisively with problem behaviour should

it arise.

• Encourage behaviour you like.

• Develop realistic expectations of your children and yourself.

• Take care of yourself as a parent.

DATES

Seminar 1: Thursday 1st October 2009 - 7.00pm - ‘The Power of Positive

Parenting’

Seminar 2: Thursday 8th October - 7.00pm - ‘Raising Happy, Confident Children’

Seminar 3: Thursday 15th October - 7.00pm - ‘Raising Resilient Children’

Please contact the school if you would like to come along to any of the three

listed seminars. However, you can also just “turn up on the night”.

There is no obligation to attend all three seminars; parents may attend 1, 2 or all

3.

Deben student Ellen Wright was asked by her dad, Charles, to organise a street

dance team to entertain visitors to the BT Adastral Park Family Fun Day on June

27th.

Ellen, with fellow students Jordan Field and Hannah Butcher, along with Gemma

Pipe and Sophie Hopkins from Orwell High, devised and rehearsed a 15 minute

dance routine. On the day, the five 16 year olds entertained some of the 4000

visitors to Adastral Park and also taught a few dance moves.

Competitors from all year groups took part in field and track events during the

morning with the track finals taking place in the afternoon. Students competed

in a range of events that included 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and relays. They

were enthusiastically cheered on by their fellow students as they raced to earn

points for their House team. The glorious sunshine was almost as scorching as

some of the performances.

School records were smashed throughout the afternoon. Ben Parker ran a

record time of 5 minutes 18 seconds in the Year 7 1500m race. The blistering

pace of Chris Franks in the 800m Year 8 challenge saw him cross the finishing

line in 2 minutes 30.85 seconds. He broke the previous school record of 2

minutes 31.01 seconds which has been held by R. Baker since 1977.

Performance of the day went to Year 10 student Rhys Hinton-Smith. Rhys

knocked six seconds off the 800m school record finishing in a remarkable 2

minutes 11 seconds, and he shattered the 1500m record by 21 seconds when

he raced over the line in 4 minutes 41 seconds.

The winning House, Turner, was awarded the Sports Day Trophy by special guest

ex-Olympian, Mr Stan Cox. Last year the BBC Inside Out team made a

programme as a tribute and celebration of his achievements. Part of the

filming for the programme took place with Deben students. Mr Cox ran the 10K

in the 1948 Olympics and was the world’s top marathon runner in 1952 Helsinki

Olympics in 2 hours 18 minutes, and we were delighted that he was able to join

us on the day.

The Sports Day Trophy has a very special association with the school.

Mr Gildersleeves and his late wife were both students at Deben over 60 years

ago and he kindly donated the trophy to the school in his wife’s memory.

Unfortunately Mr Gildersleeves was unable to attend this year, but sincere

thanks go to him for his continued support for the school.

Well done to everyone who took part!

“The best learners in the world walk through our doors.”

On July 15th Deben hosted its first

Art Slam and Open Mic Night. This

original and exciting event

showcased a range of extremely

talented artists and musicians.

Wh i l e the aud ience was

serenaded with a range of musical

acts from year 7 to 13 they saw Art

being created by artists from year 7

to 9 in front of their very eyes. The

music highlighted the wide range

of talented solo singers and bands

who even performed their own

original material.

The winning entry

Each Art slam team were given a title to work

from and had to create their own piece of art

during the night. The teams had a wide range of

materials to choose from and demonstrated their

wonderful creativity. The winning team which

included Fearne Hussey, Freddie Stafford and

Esme Watling Smith created an exciting

composition based on the theme of destruction.

Look out for the next Art Slam event with more

wonderful Art and Music. Mrs Battle

“The best learners in the world walk through our doors.”

On 6th July normal timetables were suspended for the whole

week as students engaged in a range of exciting activities

and workshops, both on and off site, as part of this year’s

ArtsWeek.

An event of this scale takes an enormous amount of

planning and organisation – and this all began back in

Autumn Term 2008. More than 35 different pathways of

activity were made available for students to choose from,

and we were really pleased with the diversity of the

pathways we were able to offer. These included dance

and musical theatre, forensic science, fashion, song-writing,

the circus, sculpture, sport and media – to name but a few!

Some students also had the opportunity to go on residential

trips for the week. Members of the Deben Strings and

Deben Jazz Band went to the Isle of Wight, whilst students

who enjoy all aspects of sport and fitness enjoyed a

challenging PGL multi-activity week in North Devon. We aim to provide stimulating and exciting opportunities

both inside and outside the structure of the curriculum. An

event such as this provides students with the chance to

engage, and develop their skills and knowledge, in an area

they particularly enjoy, or to try and experience something

completely different.

Throughout the week the fun and enjoyment was a pleasure

to see. Every area of the school was buzzing with activity.

Stress-Busters offered hand massages, aspiring models

strutted their stuff on the catwalk, speed skaters raced

around the sports hall, sculptures were created, and songs

were written.

And to top it all the media team captured it all

through producing a radio and TV programme and

compiling two ArtsWeek Newspapers.

school website www.deben.suffolk.sch.uk

“The best learners in the world walk through our doors.”

A selection of students aged 15-19 years old from

Deben High School spent two weeks in the

Summer Term working at University Campus

Suffolk through an Escalators Futures project.

Their main tutor over the two weeks was a

director from the renowned Gecko Theatre

Company but the students also worked with a

variety of professional artists and choreographers.

As part of the project they also spent an industry

day at the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich learning

about back stage roles and marketing and had

an opportunity to meet the Wolsey Theatre team.

They also created a piece of music which they

recorded in a professional recording studio in

Ipswich.

As a culmination of the project the students

performed their production at Sudbury Upper

High School and here at Deben to an invited

audience of parents and guests as an

appropriate end to the highly successful

ArtsWeek.

Adam Flatman, Head Boy, was one of the

performers and Lucy Bingham, Head Girl, has

documented the entire event as part of a

photography project.

• Staircase renewal and redecoration

• Refurbishment of the Sixth Form area

• New tarmac surface at the rear of the school

Nestles box tops for Books tokens are on many Nestles cereals like Shreddies,

Nesquik, Cheerios, Clusters, Golden Grahams etc and we are saving for the

cash option so each one is worth 10p to us. Please keep sending in. Mrs Macpherson

_____________________________________________________________________________

Please keep sending in old phones. You may have at least one old mobile

phone that you could donate or ask at your workplace for colleagues to

donate to the school. Pupils can either donate the phones direct to the school

or choose some fantastic prizes for helping with the campaign. The more

phones the bigger the prize. In addition the school will be provided with

educational resources and a cash prize.

Mrs Armbruster

From this September Religious Studies will

change its name to Philosophy and Ethics. The

name change will appear on student and staff

timetables. The reason behind the change is to

reflect the more enquiring aspect of this

subject. It is also to reflect the change in

primary school teaching. Philosophy is now

taught in our feeder primary schools and is also

a subject that is offered at ‘A’ level at Deben

High School. Therefore it makes sense to have one half of Philosophy from

primary school to sixth form.

Mr Stares

Parents please note that school shoes are not available from a sports shop such

as JJB. These shops sell leather look trainers which are not school shoes. School

shoes should be obtained from a shoe shop or the shoe department within

large stores.
