It won’t be long now, and the leaves will be
turning beautiful colors and the crops will be
ready to harvest. The farmers will be gearing
up for the harvest and it looks like it will be a
bountiful crop. We thank God for the sunshine
and rain during this growing season. We want
to remind the farmers to keep safety in mind
and everyone on the roads to be cautious of the
extra farm equipment on the roadways.
Most of us really like the fall season because
cooler weather and fall sports like football,
volley ball and soccer begin. We want to wish
our local teams success and hope our students
have a great year at school. American State
Bank will be hosting tailgates before many
football games. We held tailgates at BHRV,
Western & West Lyon in August. Please join
us on Sept. 14 at the MOC-FV Homecoming
game and the Sioux Falls Christian game and
on September 28 at the Sioux Center Home-
coming game. All proceeds go to the schools’
booster clubs.

Stanley Speer, President
A motor coach with
many excited Spirit
Club members took off
for our Iowa Balloons,
Bowls & Bridges tour
on July 31, for a three-
day tour. Our first day
and a half was spent in
Winterset, made famous
by the movie, “Bridges
of Madison County”.
Many of our stops were
featured in the film, like
our lunch stop at the Northside Café, the town square and the amazing cov-
ered bridges. We also had the pleasure of touring John Wayne’s birthplace,
the Iowa Quilt Museum and were amazed by the revitalized Iowa Theater.
On Wednesday, we enjoyed a tour and tasting at one of the oldest Iowa
wineries, Summerset Winery near Indianola. We then dug into the history
of balloons at the National Balloon Museum and then we were off to the
National Balloon Classic which is held every year in Indianola. Balloon en-
thusiasts from all over the country meet to fly their beautiful hot air bal-
loons. Unfortunately, it was a little too windy for the balloons to fly but we
did get to experience the Night Glow at dusk. We enjoyed the amazing sum-
mer evening and were entertained by the live music. We also appreciated
the delicious food from the vendors and visiting with friends. Luckily, we
did see some of the balloons fly the next morning on our way out of town.
Thursday we drove to Pleasantville to tour the Smokey Row Coffee
headquarters. We learned a lot about the art of roasting coffee. We also had
a chance to enjoy coffee and a treat at the Smokey Row Coffee Shop right
down the street. Then we were off to Newton to visit the Maytag Dairy
Farms. The Maytag family assembled their champion dairy herd in the
1920s. Through the years they have concentrated on creating award winning
blue cheese. Most of their sales are done through a mail order business and
are given as gifts at Christmas. We enjoyed samples of three different
cheeses. In the afternoon we traveled to Grinnell Heritage Farm, an organic
vegetable, fruit and herb farm. It was very interesting to hear the process of
growing produce on the 22-acre farm without chemicals.
It was a great trip! We learned a lot about Balloons, Bowls & Bridges
and decided the state of Iowa has a vast array of interesting history, sports,
businesses, and scenic spots.
