The farmers will be gearing up for the harvest and it looks like it will be a bountiful crop. We thank God for the sunshine and rain during this growing season. We want to remind the farmers to keep safety in mind and everyone on the roads to be cautious of the extra farm equipment on the roadways. Most of us really like the fall season because cooler weather and fall sports like football, volley ball and soccer begin. We want to wish our local teams success and hope our students have a great year at school. American State Bank will be hosting tailgates before many football games. We held tailgates at BHRV, Western & West Lyon in August. Please join us on Sept. 14 at the MOC-FV Homecoming game and the Sioux Falls Christian game and on September 28 at the Sioux Center Home- coming game. All proceeds go to the schools’ booster clubs. Stanley Speer, President A motor coach with many excited Spirit Club members took off for our Iowa Balloons, Bowls & Bridges tour on July 31, for a three- day tour. Our first day and a half was spent in Winterset, made famous by the movie, “Bridges of Madison County”. Many of our stops were featured in the film, like our lunch stop at the Northside Café, the town square and the amazing cov- ered bridges. We also had the pleasure of touring John Wayne’s birthplace, the Iowa Quilt Museum and were amazed by the revitalized Iowa Theater. On Wednesday, we enjoyed a tour and tasting at one of the oldest Iowa wineries, Summerset Winery near Indianola. We then dug into the history of balloons at the National Balloon Museum and then we were off to the National Balloon Classic which is held every year in Indianola. Balloon en- thusiasts from all over the country meet to fly their beautiful hot air bal- loons. Unfortunately, it was a little too windy for the balloons to fly but we did get to experience the Night Glow at dusk. We enjoyed the amazing sum- mer evening and were entertained by the live music. We also appreciated the delicious food from the vendors and visiting with friends. Luckily, we did see some of the balloons fly the next morning on our way out of town. Thursday we drove to Pleasantville to tour the Smokey Row Coffee headquarters. We learned a lot about the art of roasting coffee. We also had a chance to enjoy coffee and a treat at the Smokey Row Coffee Shop right down the street. Then we were off to Newton to visit the Maytag Dairy Farms. The Maytag family assembled their champion dairy herd in the 1920s. Through the years they have concentrated on creating award winning blue cheese. Most of their sales are done through a mail order business and are given as gifts at Christmas. We enjoyed samples of three different cheeses. In the afternoon we traveled to Grinnell Heritage Farm, an organic vegetable, fruit and herb farm. It was very interesting to hear the process of growing produce on the 22-acre farm without chemicals. It was a great trip! We learned a lot about Balloons, Bowls & Bridges and decided the state of Iowa has a vast array of interesting history, sports, businesses, and scenic spots. A motor coach with

many excited Spirit

Club members took off

for our Iowa Balloons,

Bowls & Bridges tour

on July 31, for a three-

day tour. Our first day

and a half was spent in

Winterset, made famous

by the movie, “Bridges

of Madison County”.

Many of our stops were

our lunch stop at the Northside Café, the town square and the amazing cov-

ered bridges. We also had the pleasure of touring John Wayne’s birthplace,

the Iowa Quilt Museum and were amazed by the revitalized Iowa Theater.

Loess Hills Fall Tour October 18 (Thursday) The Loess Hills Scenic By-Ways are known for their unique beauty, scenery and geological

formations. On, Thursday, October 18, the Spirit Club will tour a Danish Lutheran Church,

Preparation Canyon State Park, and the fully restored Mann Country School House. We will

also visit the Loess Hills Lavender Farm, the DeSoto Bend Wildlife Refuge and enjoy freshly

baked pie at Small’s Fruit Farm. We anticipate a beautiful day as we enjoy amazing fall colors.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” The Spirit Club enjoyed “Thoroughly Modern Millie” at the Okoboji Summer

Theatre on Friday, August 10. The setting was the roaring 20’s and the production

included amazing costumes, fabulous dance routines and marvelous music.

Bravo to the cast and crew for a job well done again this season, our trips to

the Okoboji Summer Theatre are always highlights of our summer.

We also enjoyed a visit to Arnolds Park to see the progress of the remarkable

Renovation. After the performance we had a delicious dinner at

the Old 60 Steak House in Sheldon.

Branson & Kansas City November 12-16 (Monday-Friday) Our annual excursion to Branson is being planned for November. We will again see some

great shows including: The Dutton Family, Christmas Wonderland, Presley’s Christmas Jubilee, Tribute to John Denver, The Haygoods, & Samson at the Sight & Sound Theatre.

We are also going to take a scenic tour of Dogwood Canyon. We will travel to Kansas City on Thursday to attend the New Theatre Restaurant

for dinner and the production “Always... Patsy Cline”. On Friday we will travel home. Cost: $790 per person/Dbl/Occ Deposit: $100
