We have a peaceful life, we have an abundance of things we use every day. We have plenty of food, good vacations, cars, jobs. Why do we have to be saved? Here is the catch. We have all those things, but we are not safe in them. Our peace can be broken at any time, our houses can be lost at any time. We can lose our job and not have enough money to buy food. Because everything we have can be gone in seconds. The only source of our security is God. In Him we can find our peace and happiness. Only He can really provide what we need. A Message from Our Pastor

“Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you.” (Is 35:4)

The Prophet Isaiah delivered a very important message to the Israelites. “God will save YOU.” When we look at it, we can ask ourselves: save us from what or from whom? We have a peaceful life, we have an abundance of things we use every day. We have plenty of food, good vacations, cars, jobs. Why do we have to be saved?

Here is the catch. We have all those things, but we are not safe in them. Our peace can be broken at any time, our houses can be lost at any time. We can lose our job and not have enough money to buy food. Because everything we have can be gone in seconds. The only source of our security is God. In Him we can find our peace and happiness. Only He can really provide what we need. We can say that only in Him we can understand ourselves. Don’t be afraid to trust God. He will save you for eternal life.

Pax Christi Schola Cantorum Registration is now open for

children interested in participating in the Pax Christi

Schola Cantorum or choir school.

Rehearsals begin the first week of September. Any child grades 3-12 may register. Please download and fill out registration forms from our parish website (www.paxchristi.org, click on Programs).

The choir school is a music program for adults and children in the European cathedral tradition. The aim of the program is to promote the musical and spiritual development of its members within the context of the Roman Catholic liturgy, forming Disciples for the lifelong praise and worship of God.

Studies focus on: • Vocal training, sight singing, ear training and music

theory. • Formation of future singers and cantors. • The joy of making music together with others for God

and for our parish family. • Formation in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. The

Schola Cantorum works to bring about the liturgical renewal envisioned by the bishops during the Second Vatican Council in its document The Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy.

Adult members of the schola cantorum will resume rehearsals on Wednesday, September 5th at 7:15 p.m. New members and all voice types are welcome. Questions? Contact Raymond Ortiz, Music Director, at [email protected].

Facebook Live with Bishop Sheridan In case you have not yet heard, Bishop Michael Sheridan will participate in an interactive Facebook Live “ask-and-answer session” on Thursday, September 13th at 7:00pm MDT. In this session, Bishop Sheridan plans to address the difficult topic of clergy sexual abuse. Please visit our Facebook page, The Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs, in order to participate.

The Diocese has, from its inception in 1984, always taken allegations of sexual abuse seriously. While the Diocese has received few allegations of child abuse in its short history, we recognize the terrible evil that all victims of abuse have suffered and unite with them in the hope they can obtain justice and experience complete healing.

Bishop Sheridan will be speaking and taking questions on this topic and others during the Facebook Live event. The entire session will be available for replay on our Facebook feed for anyone that cannot attend in real time.

If you would like to submit questions for the Bishop in advance, please send them to the Diocese at [email protected].

During Ordinary Time in Year B we will highlight passages from the General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) that pertain to music during the liturgy. The GIRM contains rubrics and instructions (some of them new) for the celebration of the Mass. The first section below is a direct quote from the English translation of the document. The second section is a commentary on the passage.

Structure, Elements and Parts of the Mass: Preparation of the Gifts (GIRM #74)

The procession bringing the gifts is accompanied by the Offertory Chant (cf.#37b), which continues at least until the gifts have been placed on the altar. The norms on the manner of singing are the same as for Entrance Chant (see GIRM #48). Singing may always accompany the rite at the Offertory, even when there is no procession with the gifts.

Commentary: The Offertory Procession is a time for music, be it organ, instrumental, choral, vocal, or congregational. In general, there are those who would suggest not using congregational hymns here. The reason being that attention is often elsewhere, and simple music to accompany the procession and preparation of the altar and gifts seems better than a congregational "event."

The prescribed offertory antiphon is not found in the The Roman Missal (Father’s big red book), just as it was missing from the older Sacramentary, but does occur in the Graduale Romanum, the Gregorian Missal and the Graduale Simplex. We have not yet added the offertory chant to Mass here, but there are some nice resources out there that are being considered.

At long last, though, the actual word "Offertory" has returned to the GIRM. And the music is called the "Offertory Chant."

New voices are being accepted to the adult choir. All voice types are being accepted and although we would gladly accept those with little or no musical experience, we would love to hear from those who play an instrument or read music. The adult choir rehearses on Wednesdays from 7:15 to 9:00 p.m. in classroom 6. Please contact Raymond Ortiz in the parish office for more information.

Vacancies are being filled for the children of the schola cantorum. The rehearsal schedule is being established now and will be published in next week’s bulletin. The schola is open to children grades 3-8.

Liturgy – are you in it? Our Liturgy is celebrated in a few different types of buildings that we call “a church” – a more accurate name is “a temple.” This last name comes from the Greek word “temmein” which means “separate” or “to make something separate from others things.” In ancient Greece, this word referred to the area that was separate from a town and was used to watch the stars and sky during the night or to give praise to idols worshiped by the people.

In Christianity, this word was related to Jesus Christ and those who followed Him. “Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” (Jn 2:19) By the sacrament of baptism, we became a part of this temple, so we live in Jesus Christ if we are with Him.

After the Vatican Council, we stopped using the word “temple” when referring to the material building. It changed because of understanding the meaning of Church.

Ecclesia in Greek means church, and, from the very beginning, Christians called the palace of gathering to celebrate Eucharist - the house of the Church, the house of the assembly, the house of the call to come - which in Greek means ekkaleo (to summon, to gather). From it came our common name for all buildings – church. (We have to remember that it is related to Latin.)

Within the churches, we have a special kind of building called “basilica.” In ancient Rome, those buildings were used for special types of service or for important people. Early Christians used this word to describe special places used for the Liturgy. Very often those celebrations took place in the roman basilicas that were adopted as a church. Basilica became a place of worship with God and Jesus Christ as an archpriest and king. We have two type of basilicas: major and minor. The major basilicas are only in Rome: St. Peter, St. Paul Outside of the Walls, St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major. All others basilicas are called basilica minor.

Another type of church is a cathedral. In Greek, it meant the place of a judge or a teacher. In the Catholic Church, this name is used for a church that belongs to the chair of a bishop. In our diocese, we have a cathedral in Colorado Springs and it is the church of our Bishop.

Another building that we use is called a chapel. This name comes from the Latin cappa which means a coat or mantel. It was used to describe a place where small groups in the community celebrated the Liturgy. Therefore, we can find chapels in the old castles and monasteries, but also in small villages.

The Catholic Legacy Society was created to honor our legacy donors who have named their parish, Catholic school or a ministry of the Diocese of Colorado Springs as a beneficiary in their will or trust, retirement account, charitable gift annuity or charitable trust, life insurance policy, or through the establishment of an endowed fund. The Diocese acknowledges these special benefactors during their lifetimes. And, in conjunction with our mission, this special society provides an opportunity for benefactors to make their philanthropy a perpetual legacy for themselves and an example for their families. It also creates an infrastructure of support that makes our parishes, schools and ministries stronger, sustainable and better equipped to reach future generations. If you have named your parish, a Catholic school or a ministry of the Diocese of Colorado Springs in your estate plan, or are considering doing so, we invite you to become a member of the Catholic Legacy Society.
