on Another Great Sting Fling Festival!

For years, Azle’s biggest gath-ering has brought thousands of folks to town.

The 2015 Sting Fling Fes-tival, heading into year eight, will look nothing like any pre-decessors.

The popular parade remains, but it has a new route.

Vendors will now be lined up in the middle of Main Street.

And scads more – over 100 – can be found inside 404 Main Street – along with a photo booth, a fl ight simulator, and a face painting area.

The popular Color Fling 5K takes off at Central Park at 7:45 a.m.

New this year is Talley Amuse-ments who will set up a carnival that will thrill all ages on Friday and Saturday.

Another Sting Fling Festival fi rst is a sanctioned Steak Coo-koff Association event at 10 a.m.

The festival will conclude with music in the Central Park amphitheater Saturday from 7-9 p.m.

But don’t miss popular return-ing events: the classic car show at Azle Elementary, the petting zoo, and the entertaining “I’ve Got Talent” competition.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Sting Fling Festival without the crazy Weiner Dog Derby in the park.

So, use the map inside this special section and negotiate around this year’s fun.

You’ll agree that there’s noth-ing around like the Sting Fling Festival!www

The Sting Fling Festival is new and improved

BY MISTY SHAWIf you’re in need of waste re-

covery service at a fair price, look no further than Midwest Waste Services of Azle.

The company offers residential, commercial, and industrial waste collection to customers ranging all the way from Wichita Falls to Weatherford to Denton, as well as Lake Worth, Springtown, and Azle.

In the summer of 2011, the company’s four co-owners – Kent Durham, Jeff Watts, Jay Zook, and Beth Sweet – launched Midwest Waste Services with 100 custom-ers on their fi rst pick-up day.

They now provide services to approximately 6,500 customers.

Durham says he and his busi-ness partners were no strangers to the industry when they set out to start their own company.

“We knew each other before we started,” having all worked to-gether at IESI, Durham said. “We could see some opportunity there to do things better.

“Our customer service is a lot better, both in terms of when you call in to get issues addressed, and at the curb – I think we just do a better job.”

Durham also said Midwest avoids the hidden fees and sur-charges that other companies of-ten impose on their customers.

“Our pricing is much more straightforward,” he said. “We have a rate that’s the same every month, we factor our costs into it, and we’re still able to be competi-tive.

“With us, you pay what you pay, and that’s what you pay.”

It’s their focus on customer ser-vice and fair, competitive pricing that sets Midwest apart, as well as their involvement in the local community.

As an event sponsor for the Sting Fling 2015 festival in Azle, Midwest Waste Services will be providing trash cans and Dump-sters with pick-up service at the event.

The company is actively in-volved in local chambers of com-merce, and they also “provide free service to every volunteer fi re

Midwest Waste Services: committed to community

department in our area,” Durham said.

“If you don’t have good por-table waste service then you have more potential for people burning trash and starting fi res, so we help them out by providing that free service to the fi re departments and also making it affordable to have service out here” in rural areas, he added.

“We actually get pretty

involved in the community, and we think that’s important,” Dur-ham said.

For more information, call Midwest at 817-528-7212 or visit www.midwest-waste.com.

Located at 114 West Main Street in Azle, Midwest Waste Services offers area-wide residential, commercial, and industrial waste collection using everything from 96-gal-lon carts to 30-yard roll-off containers, and new Peterbilt trucks in their fl eet. Photo courtesy of Kent Durham

by carla noah stutsmanWholesome. Fun. Great com-

munity spirit. And a pretty good football

team.That’s what comes to Charlie

Geren’s mind when people ask him about Azle.

And it’s what makes him so glad to be a sponsor of Sting Fling – something he’s proudly done for more than a decade.

“I’ve been a sponsor since 2000, and I’ve been happy to do it every year,” Geren said. “Sting Fling is a great thing for the Azle community – it brings a lot of people together and they have a lot of wholesome fun – it’s a great family event.

“That’s the thing about Azle – everybody’s behind the com-munity, everybody’s behind the schools,” Geren continued. “It’s like Music in the Park, another example of the great community spirit in Azle.”

Geren says he was “very im-pressed” with what he saw Fri-day, Aug. 25, when he toured Azle High School with ISD of-ficials.

“What they’ve done is amaz-ing – what they’ve been able to do with the limited amount of money they had available,” Ge-ren said.

“The Career and Technology Center will really make a dif-ference for students, and that gym is really going to be some-thing!”

Representing Texas House District 99, which is generally the northwest quadrant of Tarrant County including the portions of Azle in that county, Geren was first elected State Representative in November 2000.

It’s not a job he plans to retire from anytime soon.

Geren on 199, quakes, cops“First of all, I can’t even think

about retiring until we get those bridges built on Highway 199,” Geren said. “Right now, they are scheduled for next year, with construction starting in 2017.”

But if Proposition 7 (Prop 7) passes in the November election, Geren thinks work could actu-ally begin on the SH 199 project between Wells Burnett Road and Confederate Park Road some-time in 2016.

Prop 7, a constitutional amend-ment drafted by legislators in the

Geren: a longtime Sting Fling sponsor

84th legislative session and au-thorized by SJR 5, will appear on the November 2015 statewide ballot.

The amendment would autho-rize a new, stable source of fund-ing for transportation in Texas, dedicated to the construction and maintenance of roads.

Upon passage, Prop 7 would dedicate a portion of the general sales and use tax and the motor vehicle sales tax to the general highway fund.

It would not raise taxes. The amendment would pro-

vide a significant step toward meeting the unmet funding needs for transportation projects in Texas.

Geren said he’s patiently awaiting a return call from the Texas Railroad Commission (TRC) after learning the agency

state r epresentative c harlie Geren

has issued a preliminary rul-ing that an XTO injection well north of Azle is not to blame for a spate of earthquakes in the area in 2013-14.

“I’ve got a call in to them be-cause I don’t understand it. Be-fore those wells were there, we didn’t have earthquakes, but now we do – I want a better ex-planation,” Geren said.

“If that’s not what’s causing them (quakes), we need to get busy finding out what is.”

He said he hopes to hear from the TRC no later than next week and offered to share what he learns with the Azle News as well as Azle Mayor Alan Brundrett.

Geren – a former lawman himself – made no bones about expressing his deep convictions on the recent assault on law en-

forcement officers.“It’s horrible, and I don’t un-

derstand it at all. All lives matter, and to say that only black lives matter is racist in itself,” Geren said.

“We need to stand together, and we need to stand behind all first responders. We’ve got to catch these people who are ex-ecuting officers, put them in the state penitentiary and then ex-ecute them.

“There’s just no reason why these brave men and women should have to go out every day

and be fearful for their lives when they’re doing something as innocent as pumping gas,” Geren continued.

“‘Pig in a blanket’ – that’s a reference to cops in body bags. We don’t need that in our com-munity. We don’t need that any-where.”

Texas House Reps serve two-year terms, and Geren is already looking ahead to a Republican primary in March 2016, where he faces a challenge from for-mer hedge-fund manager Bo French.

BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMANWhen choosing a bank, people

typically look at things like inter-est rates, location, customer ser-vice, and security of funds.

Pinnacle Bank Azle can meet or beat just about any bank when it comes to the business of banking.

But it’s not just about business. If you run in Central Park,

work out at the gym, go to the grocery store, attend school or church functions or any number of community activities around Azle, you’ve likely run into a Pinnacle Bank employee or bank offi cer there.

That’s because almost all of them live in the Azle area and care about everything that goes on here – and that’s especially true when it comes to Azle’s children.

Regina Stokes, vice president of HR/training at the bank, spoke about Pinnacle’s national public relations campaign, Why Com-munity Matters.

“Every time I see that slogan, I think about our children,” Stokes said. “The children of Azle are the future of our community – they are the ones who will contin-ue the legacy when we’re gone.”

Stokes and her co-workers put their money where their mouths are, so to speak, by volunteering on their own time for various or-ganizations around Azle. In just about every instance, there’s a benefi t to children.

Randa Goode, assistant vice president lending offi cer, is spear-heading the 2nd annual “I’ve Got Talent” competition during Sting Fling again this year.

Goode also speaks to students about the importance of fi nances through the Communities in School Program and is active with the Azle High School Drama Boosters and the Azle High School Swim Team Boosters.

Kristie Reger, assistant vice president lending of-fi cer and board member of the Azle hospital, helps the youth of the community through Pin-nacle Bank’s Wool Fund – a pro-gram open to every school in the district year-round and funded by employee donations.

“The Wool Fund provides ev-erything from clothing to coats, shoes, and even personal hygiene items to children in need identifi ed by school personnel,” Reger said.

agement offi cer, as a member of the local Lions Club; she partici-pates in the back pack program as well as the Lions’ Angel Tree each year.

Nate Simmons, VP lending of-fi cer, moved to Azle with his wife and two young sons.

Simmons, too, is not just busy

with his customers – he plays an important role as a member of the Azle Ministerial Alliance in put-ting on Follow The Flag, a huge annual event in Central Park each Fourth of July.

“It’s a community-wide event funded entirely by donations of money and time,” Simmons said of the Christian patriotic event. “I think the overall community sense of Follow The Flag is very posi-

the community care about them and want them to grow and fl ourish,” Stokes said.

Simmons said that, toward the end of each year, an email arrives from the Dinsdale fam-ily, founders and owners of Pin-nacle Bank, asking each branch to assess its contributions to the

tive, and it’s free for everyone.”Simmons credits Kristie Tatsch,

assistant vice president lending offi cer, as another major volun-teer contributor to the event.

Simmons also serves on Azle High School’s Career and Tech-nology Education Advisory Com-mittee. The committee, made up

of local business men and women, reaches out to the next generation by men-toring students and giving them a real-life glimpse into various careers and trades.

Goode described the atti-tude of her fellow Pinnacle Bank employees: “We all

want to make a positive impact on this community – it’s where we live, too.”

Stokes agreed, adding that she often fi nds opportunities in her daily life to talk to young peo-ple – sometimes about banking; sometimes about a career choice; sometimes about nothing impor-tant at all.

“The point is to engage them and to let them know people in

community.“Have we done enough?” the

Dinsdales want to know.Simmons said, “Here at Pin-

nacle Bank Azle, we give fi nan-cially – but we recognize that often, showing up and giving of our time and effort outweighs the dollars.”

As a leader in oil and gas ex-ploration in the Barnett Shale formation, which includes Azle and surrounding areas, XTO En-ergy Inc. remains committed to safety and reliability.

Founded in 1986 in Fort Worth, XTO Energy’s principal business is extracting natural gas from shale and other tight formations while also producing crude oil and natural gas liquids.

The largest producer of natu-ral gas in the United States, XTO’s portfo-lio consists of 11 mil-lion acres with a total resource of approxi-mately 139 trillion cubic feet equivalent.

In 2010, XTO Energy Inc. and ExxonMobil Corporation merged, teaming XTO’s exper-tise and experience in the natu-ral gas business with ExxonMo-bil’s cutting-edge technologies, fi nancial strength, and historic leadership in the global energy industry.

XTO strives to conduct busi-ness in Texas, and throughout the U.S., in a manner that is pro-tective of the environment and compatible with the economic needs of the communities in which it operates.

The company employs over

3,000 people in Texas, operat-ing in 78 counties statewide, and in 2014, XTO, and ExxonMobil paid more than $695.4 million in taxes to the state of Texas.

Additionally in 2014, XTO and ExxonMobil invested $44 million in higher education, medical care, environmental re-search, and arts and civic orga-nizations in Texas.

XTO is committed to ensur-ing the health and safety of its

employees, contractors and the communities where it operates.

The company works closely with

communities, local of-fi cials and regulatory authorities to meet the highest standards.

When XTO makes decisions about processes or facility ex-pansions, the impact on the com-munity is one of the company’s key priorities. To address com-munity concerns about XTO ac-tivities, the company takes steps such as limiting truck traffi c and minimizing its surface impact at well sites.

XTO is built around excep-tional employees who make ex-ceptional performance a habit, thanks to talented people, tech-nological innovation, and plenty of hard work.

Congratulations to theAzle Area Chamber of Commerce for another great Sting Fling Festival!

Dr. Brooke Porter and the en-tire staff at Azle Dental Care are determined to give their patients the best service in the Metro-plex.

They redesigned their patient recall system with the use of email and texting. The new sys-tem reminds patients of clean-ings and d e n t a l a p p o i n t -ments by sending an email or a text.

If pa-tients would rather receive reminders by phone, the recall message has a button to simply option out of the service.

“We love all of our patients and we want an easy way to stay in touch with them,” said Dr. Porter.

Azle has grown a lot since Dr. Brooke Porter started her prac-tice in 1998. As new people con-tinue to move in, Azle Dental Care has adjusted to the growth.

Eight years ago they moved from their long-time offi ce at Park Place Center to a more spacious building at 912 Boyd Road.

Azle Dental Care’s website, Smilegreat.com gives patients information on dental proce-dures that are performed in the

offi ce as well as staff introduc-tions and patient forms.

The site is also linked to Azle Dental Care’s Twitter and Face-book pages. These online social networking sites have improved the doctor/patient relationship by allowing for daily interaction and giving everyone a forum

for some conver-sa t ions a b o u t d e n -tal and general hea l th-

care.Azle Dental Care has spon-

sored its own contests on Facebook with giveaways like tickets to a Texas Rangers base-ball games and Six Flags Over Texas.

Facebook is giving the staff and patients at Azle Dental Care “way too much fun,” said Dr. Porter. “If you visit our page, please be sure to like us!”

Smilegreat.com is also a good place to go for anyone who wants to know what’s happening in other parts of town because Azle Dental Care has dedicated an entire page to the city – future Azleites can fi nd information on the Texas Health Harris Method-ist Hospital Azle, local govern-ment and politics, Eagle Moun-tain Lake, and Azle schools.

Smile great with Azle Dental Care

Dr. Brooke Porter (center) and her entire team at Azle Dental Care are happy to wel-come all new and returning patients to visit them at their offi ce at 912 Boyd Road in Azle. Call them today at 817-444-1673 or check out their web site at Smilegreat.com – now linked to Facebook and Twitter.

Brian and Nancy Rogers own Ace of Azle and, once they got here, they didn’t take long to get involved in the community.

While Nancy runs the store, Brian represents them as a mem-ber of the R o t a r y C l u b ; he’s also an Opti-mist and an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce.

The couple also contrib-utes to the community in several other ways, too, either through Music in the Park or local charity shindigs.

That’s refl ective of theservice they strive to pro-vide each customer when they stop by Ace of Azle at 505 Stewart Street.

When the Rogerses ar-rived in town in 2011 from Eastland and settled in, they were surprised at how friendly folks were.

Ace is the place here in Azle

“I made more friends here in Azle than I ever made in Eastland in 19 years,” Brian said.

“We love it,” he added. “A benefi t to me is that I’minvolved in the community

which I never had the op-portunity to be in Eastland.”

Ace of Azle was

born when Brian got tired of driving back and forth to Fort Worth when he was remodeling his house.

“I thought, this is crazy,” he said. What can I do to improve this?”

He said he called True Value and Ace: “True Val-ue never called me back; Ace called back the very next day.

“Within 150 days, we had a store open.”

Nancy and Brian staff their store with local folks who know what other local folks need and want.

“We’ve got a lot of nice community people and a lot of community sup-port,” Brian said.

People who don’t want to wander around a mas-sive box store can fetch w h a t t h e y need in

Azle and get back to their project.

The Ace motto – “Get in, get out, and get on with your life!” – is the mantra of the Azle store.

The Rogerses’ Ace is

stuffed to the gills with whatever a handyman might need.

Need a key cut?Carpet cleaning machine

rental?Ace can take care of all

that.If you need plumbing

supplies, paint, tools, au-tomotive parts, heating and cooling essentials, and even outdoor living items, Ace of Azle has them.

If by chance they don’t have it, Nancy will get whatever you need, pron-to.

Like other Aces, cus-tomers can order online and pick up their items at the Azle store.

The array of items to buy is astounding.

Ace of Azle is open ev-ery day. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Nancy and Brian want their customers happy and they’ll work until they achieve that goal – the same mindset they’ve had since the store opened in January 2013.

Judy Butler has over 30 years of experience with State Farm Insurance, Carter said, followed closely by fellow team member Vivian Roblow with over 27 years with State Farm.

Accounts Manager Shadi Sut-ton, an Azle High School alum-nus, specializes in life insurance and fi nancial services.

“Kimberly Edwards also has over 27 years of experience with State Farm and is a very familiar

face around town,” Carter said. “And Brittny Lavender is our newest team member, we are so happy to have her here!”

The team works hard to create a warm and inviting atmosphere at Haley Carter State Farm.

“We’re not your everyday agency – it is a place to feel wel-come and at home,” said Carter. “People are welcome to just stop by for a visit, coffee, or a soft drink. We enjoy being in-volved in our client’s lives and being people that they can de-pend on when it is most needed.”

During September and Octo-ber, the agency is running a pro-motion in conjunction with Life Insurance Awareness Month.

“The promotion is designed to review, educate, and advise

people of the community on the value of life insurance and on the importance of protecting the ones that they love and the peo-ple that love them,” Carter said.

“We want to make sure that every person that we come in contact with has the option to protect their loved ones with State Farm Life Insurance.”

Carter says her door is always open as her agency strives to meet cli-ents’ needs promptly and fully.

“We under-stand that our

clients are the most important asset of our business – without them, we wouldn’t be here,” she said. “We treasure our clients not only as policyholders, but as friends and family.

“Our doors are always open to the people of Azle and the sur-rounding communities.”

BY MISTY SHAWIt’s only been a month since

Anytime Fitness opened in Azle, but the state-of-the-art, 24-hour facility is already off to a great start.

“It’s been really awesome,” said Jake Pitt, co-owner and operator of Anytime Fitness. “We’ve been very welcomed by the community and we’re really doing well.”

Anytime Fitness is a facility that never sleeps; members have the opportu-nity to work out around the clock.

“Our main thing is con-ven ience , ” Pitt said. “Members have full access 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we never close.”

As Azle’s newest gym, Any-time Fitness has a lot to offer, in-cluding a virtual training room, Zumba classes, a personal train-er, the “Silver Sneakers” pro-gram for senior citizens, and, of course, a fully equipped weight room.

“We have the most state-of-the-art gym in Azle – we offer full access to cable and Inter-

net right there on your cardio machine,” Pitt said. “We have a huge functional training area.”

Member satisfaction is a top priority at Anytime Fitness, Pitt said, and the gym’s employees are committed to making sure its members are well taken care of.

“Our customer service is above and beyond,” said Pitt. “We differentiate ourselves by being not your average gym. Ev-eryone we employ is there spe-cifi cally to help the members.”

Anytime Fit-ness is a family owned franchise which Pitt and his parents op-erate along with managing part-ner Trey Logan.

The owners strive to make Anytime Fitness a welcoming place and a partner in the Azle community.

“We want to help build the community in Azle, that has been our main focus since we opened here,” Pitt said. “We’re trying to be really involved and in touch with the community.

“We know everyone’s name and we want everyone to know our names – it’s a surprisingly personable environment.”

There’s no other store in Azle like Brookshire’s.

Run by Mark Laudenheimer, the gro-cery store is well versed in the company’s core beliefs and environment.

That’s why the store took part in the Brookshire’s Gatorade promotion that ended in August and supplied local First Responders with 3,000 bottles of the re-placement fluid.

Laudenheimer is Azle focused. How plugged in is he? He’s a Rotary

member and regularly helps out with food or funds locally.

And he’s a member of the Cham-ber of Commerce.

For his efforts, Lauden-heimer was the 2014 Cham-ber Member of the Year.

The store itself is Azle-cen-tric.

“The store fits into Azle because of the people in the community – serving the community, seeing everybody every day, hearing everybody’s stories.

“You get to learn a lot about a person,” Laudenheimer said.

From Monroe, Louisiana, Lauden-heimer is a familiar face around town.

When he uses his Cajun skills during crawdad season, the rush is on to Brook-

shire’s at 511 North Stewart Street to buy up those tasty mud bugs.

Laudenheimer knows how to select the best crayfish and when to buy them. Then he cooks them up in a massive pot.

The crawdads sell out quickly each sea-son.

Brookshire’s is always about commu-nity, and Laudenheimer takes that to an-other level.

“It’s both,” he noted, a business model and his personal touch.

Laudenheimer said, “My family owned a family business. Customers are

what keep you around.“If you don’t know your

customers or you aren’t in-volved with your customers,

they are not going to come back.”

He stresses his employees are big on Azle – they live here and love it.

Laudenheimer moved to Azle with his pregnant wife, after 80 years of family history in Louisiana. Hesitant at first, they arrived in 2010 and were overjoyed with the community.

He plans on staying in Azle. “I’ve been here six years and I can’t see going any-where else. These are great people in a great town.”

Azle Brookshire’s remains community focused

A lighthearted struggle ensued just before the 2014 Azle Hornet Home-coming football game when Azle Brookshire’s Store Manager Mark Laudenheimer and friends presented a check for $1,000 to AISD Ath-letic Director Scott Anderson. Above, (l-r): Laudenheimer gets a laugh when Sophie Laudenheimer, Landri Seward, and Madeline Green try to keep Anderson from taking the check. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman
