Flu Plus 2From Cathleen McKnight, Director, Patient Centered Strategies

As the back-to-school buzz slows down, it’s time to shift from ‘Focus on 4’ to ‘Flu Plus 2.’ The aim of Flu Plus 2 is to continue the emphasis on a company-wide effort to increase assessment and promotion of age-appropriate and disease-specific vaccines – specifically, Tdap and the Pneumococcal vaccines (Prevnar13/ Pneumovax23).

This week, each clinic will receive a laminated sheet* (preview here) with patient-facing and brief provider talking points to assist in the assessment and promotion of Flu Plus 2. On TLC Today under 5 | 5 | 95, related best practices including expediting flu shots will also be posted.

Flu Plus 2 has the potential to have a profound effect on population health in the communities we serve while elevating our business strategy to generate 5 more visits per day by taking it back to the basics of health promotion. Remember, each time you advocate for a flu shot, you are also advocating for a donated meal! “Get a flu shot and we’ll donate a meal.”

Results from Focus on 4 continue to trickle in! Latest numbers show an increase of more than 5,000 vaccines year over year. That is 5,000 more lives directly protected and many more when you consider the indirect impact to the community that would be affected by the disease(s). This is a great start, but together we can do better! It is time again to stir up a little friendly competition and engage your clinic teams in who can touch our communities the most with annual flu shot promotion, corresponding meal donation, plus an immunization add-on!

Note: Medicare will not cover Tdap. Medicare will only cover Td in the presence of an injury. Discuss relevant immunizations to each patient taking into consideration age-appropriate and disease-specific recommendation when discussing an add-on vaccine.

(*) Along with the Flu Plus 2 laminated sheet, additional bins will be received. In a separate mailing, new lab supplies will make their way into clinics. Please hold tight to these supplies – additional information about urine lab collection for STI evaluation is coming soon in next week’s News Blast!

Eye Kit Content – Goodbye Cipro, Hello Saline

The Medical Affairs team has decided to remove Cipro eye drops from the corneal abrasion kit and replace with small saline flushing vials. This is not a decision of cost as both are relatively inexpensive. The individual saline vials for flushing the fluorescein will require less maintenance as individual single-use 3mL vials are opened and do not have to be replaced within the timeframe like the Cipro drops for multiple uses. The field has been either flushing with Cipro (whether an antibiotic was indicated or not) or opening a big bottle of saline to flush and discarding. To promote antibiotic stewardship, the Cipro will be removed entirely. Any patient requiring the antibiotic eye drop will be given a prescription.

Syringes and NeedlesFrom Taylor Gregory, Purchasing Coordinator

Vanish Point and Safety Glide Needles

As you may remember in our previous News Blast article on June 15, we stated that clinics should no longer use the Safety Glide brand of needles and syringes. We received feedback from the clinics on the new Vanish Point syringe and needle products and realized that Vanish Point only offered a fixed needle product. This made it more difficult for clinicians to use. Upon further review by the Scopes of Services Committee, we have decided to add the Safety Glide needles back onto the Order Guide. A copy of the updated Order Guide will be on TLC Today’s Supply Chain Management home page. For clinics using CAO, the updated order guides will be sent to your RCDs.

The following will all be made available on the order guide for syringes and needles:

Biometric ScreeningsFrom Eileen Myers, VP, Retail Dietetics & Nutrition Solutions

Very Important—Please note: All Kroger associates should be given an “I CAN DO THAT” form along with TLC Results Form (Form 530G) when completing a biometric screening. If your clinic runs low on this form, you can order more through DELUXE. It is now September and we should be seeing a lot more associates over the next 3+ weeks.

Bringing Family Meals Month Inside the ClinicFrom Allison Kuhn, Director of Retail Dietetics

The Little Clinic is celebrating National Family Meals Month™ in September. This is a nationwide event designed to underscore the benefits of family meals and the role we can play in helping our patients and their families share one more meal at home per week. Numerous studies show that home-cooked meals nourish the spirit, brain and health of all family members. In the larger Kroger store, sampling on September 9-11 and digital content will be supporting the campaign, but how will we bring this home to our own patients? In the month of September, we’re calling on our providers to participate in a “seatbelt campaign” with each of our patients.

Akin to a pediatrician asking, “Do you wear a seatbelt?” our providers will spearhead this campaign by asking our patients, “Do you eat family meals at home?” The provider will then present the patient with our “starter kit” booklet, which explains the campaign and provides coupons and recipes for family meals. This is a way to show patients how much TLC cares about them and their family’s health and well-being and to provide that “plus a little.” In markets with dietitians, the RDNs will also be offering free cooking and meal-planning classes that align with the recipes shared in the booklet, and will also be sharing the campaign during media segments.

Booklets will be delivered to each clinic in a one-time shipment for distribution to each patient from September 12-30. For markets with dietitians, additional advertising for dietitian services will be present on the booklet.

Meet a Dietitian in September and Win BigFrom Allison Kuhn, Director of Retail Dietetics

During the month of September, we’re reaching out to our associates in a big way. Each store-based associate (includes clinic, all store and pharmacy) that completes a free, private, HIPAA-compliant 15-minute nutrition assessment with a dietitian will be entered to win a fabulous prize from our vendor partners. Each dietitian will keep track of these meet-and-greets using our customer contact cards and, at the end of the month, there will be one winner drawn for each store. The dietitians will also be holding various outreach activities for associates during September. It’s the perfect time to take advantage of the 50% associate discount for dietitian services, address any biometric screening results that may need improvement and to head into the holiday season armed with nutritional know-how!

What’s Your Uplift Story? From Karen Kopp, Executive Assistant to the President

Maybe a store associate’s hospitality made you feel like a welcomed friend. Perhaps a coworker stepped in to help in a big way without you having to ask. Or maybe somebody went out of his or her way to do something special for you just because you needed a hand.

Everyone has a story to tell about a personal experience that made him or her feel valued and appreciated. Stories like these Feed the Human Spirit. After all, when we lift each other, we are all uplifted!

We want to hear your Uplift Story. Submit your story today by sending to [email protected].

Clinic Staff at The Little Clinic in Stone Mountain, Georgia

Took my son here for a strep test, and the nurse suggested another test in addition. I was very pleased with the overall experience. We were seen within about 15 minutes and out of there within about 30 minutes, early on a Saturday morning. We will go back in the future if needed.
