Avoiding Apostasy Apostasy is a real danger that must constantly be avoided. The danger of apostasy is that it can happen to anyone. Judas, one of the Lord’s apostles fell away (Acts 1:25). Peter closed out his second epistle with this warn-ing, saying, “You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen” (II Peter 3:17, 18). The writer of the letter to the Hebrews warned his fellow Christians to “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the liv-ing God” (Heb. 3:12). The advice given by Joshua to the nation of Israel is good advice for us today. Joshua told them, “Therefore be very courageous to keep and to do all that is writ-ten in the Book of the Law of Moses, lest you turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left, 7 "and lest you go among these nations, these who remain among you. You shall not make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause anyone to swear by them; you shall not serve them nor bow down to them, 8 "but you shall hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day. 9 "For the LORD has driven out from before you great and strong nations; but as for you, no one has been able to stand against you to this day. 10 "One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the LORD your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you. 11 "Therefore take careful heed to yourselves, that you love the LORD your God” (Joshua 23:6-11). There are four things that Joshua mentioned that would be safeguards against apostasy. The first of these was the need to be obedient to the will of God. In verse six we learn that the people were to keep and do ALL the law. There was to be no picking what you like to obey, what you thought might benefit you and then ignoring the rest. That’s an attitude that too many have toward the will of God. We treat it like a buffet line in some restaurant. We need to keep all of it and we need to do that COURGEOUSLY! There would always be the temptation to turn away from God’s will for something different. In the days of the wilderness wander-ings the Jews were tempted to turn back to Egypt where they had plenty of food. Today we Christians must follow all of the law that God has given to us which is the new covenant. Some accept the command to believe in Jesus and to repent of their sins but they reject the command to be baptized in the way and for the reason that the New Testament com-mands of us. We must also keep it courageously. Choos-ing to obey God’s will can be dangerous. There are those today who have died because they chose to obey God.
