Lucas 16:19-31

The story of the rich man and Lazarus as the church sets

it today in the context of the first reading from Amos

warns us to behold the signs of God present in our lives

and to change our way of living accordingly. The resur-

rection is not something relegated solely to the end of his-

tory. It suffuses all of creation from the beginning. Only

in the cross is it fully revealed, but it shines out from eve-

ry moment. We Christians acknowledge that we have

received this good news, as Paul tells Timothy. And we

are not to retreat from it.

We believe the action of Christ is constantly leading all

things to glory in this present moment. Do we heed these

signs? Or do we wait for the great sign as the rich man

might have done? If we do not see and appreciate the

small signs of God’s grace, will not we, like the rich man’s

brothers, fail to recognize such a great wonder as the res-

urrection of the dead?

Where do you see God working in your life? Do we take

time to acknowledge God’s presence in our midst? Do we

take seriously our mission to share the good news of our

experience of God’s grace with others? When we begin

sharing the good news, perhaps we might take a clue from

the parable and share the little moments in which God

coaxes us to holiness. It is hard for someone today to leap

from no belief to trust in the resurrection, unexpected as

it is. But if we can share our small resurrection experi-

ences, others may come to see their lives touched by simi-

lar epiphanies. Then led by their own experiences of God,

they might also come to believe in the resurrection of the

dead—the final meaning of our existence.
