WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY?
REASON 44
Some people say that Mass is boring; it's the same all the time. They have a point. Some parts of the Mass are the same all the time. That's the nature of a rite or a ritual, and life is full of rituals. It would be very troublesome, for example, to have to think up a new way of playing a football game every time a team took the field. The basic structure of the Mass is an ancient form of prayer that has been passed on from generation to generation for over two thousand years. It's fundamentally the same as Jesus first celebrated it with his disciples at the Last Supper. The readings, hymns and words of particular prayers change, but the rite basically remains the same. That fidelity to our tradition gives every Sunday Mass the power to re-present the saving action of Christ in our own contemporary experience.

Dear Parishioners,
It is part of the Archdiocesan policy that all ac ve priests par cipate in a review process approximately every 5 years. This is the first Par-ish-wide review of my ministry since I was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Chicago almost five years ago.
Your par cipa on in this review process would help my growth both as a person and a priest. This process should not take more than 30 minutes of your me. The survey can be completed by accessing the following link through the parish website under ‘Fr. Simon – Evalua on’
h ps://www.surveymonkey.com/r/late-summer-2016 If you do not have access to a computer, there are printed copies of the Parish-wide sur-vey at the exits. Please fill them out and mail it to the archdiocese. Please see Bishop Kane’s le er on the opposite page.
Thank you very much for your par cipa on, Fr. Simon Braganza

Religious Education News Classes resume this week for both Sunday and Tuesday sessions. There will be the first of three parents ses-sion held this Sunday in the Holy Name Room for all Religious Education parents. This first session will discuss keeping our identities safe while on the internet. Using the resources available through “Netsmartz”, we will explore how users of all ages can enjoy surfing the web and gaming smartly as well as safely. If you are interested in attending, bring your smart phone to the Holy Name Room at 9:45am today to learn more on the subject. The 6th grade will begin their studies on the Old Testament with a bible blessing this week. These bibles are meant to be used throughout their next three years of study. Family Mass Next Sunday Sunday, October 2nd, the seventh grade families are asked to attend the 9:30am Mass with all the other 7th grade families. Due the Mass, 7th grade students in the RE Sunday session will not have class. Instead, they are expected to attend this Mass. Please note that Mass is part of the curriculum, and they are expected to attend with families. An important service project is part of the preparation for the Mass. This is a perfect way to begin the two year process leading to Confirma-tion. Please call Danielle Smith (773-930-4554) if you’re child would like to par-ticipate in the Mass. First Communion Parent Cocktail Party All parents whose children are preparing to receive First Eucharist this May are invited to attend a cocktail party on Friday September 30th. This event is in its sixth year thanks to the many generous parents who have opened their home to other parents who. We are most grateful to Nicole Dillman and to Kim Meske for hosting this year’s event. This event brings together all the families from the school and the R.E. Pro-gram so that the true focus of the First Reconciliation and First Communion is the parish community com-ing together - truly building community!

Fall marks the beginning of a new choir “season” at Queen of All Saints. If you’ve ever thought about singing for Mass with one of our musical groups, this would be a great year to give it a try. The Basilica Choir rehearses each Wednesday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and sings for the Sunday 11:00 a.m. Mass. The Contemporary Ensemble sings weekly at the 9:30 am Sunday Masses. If you’d like to take part in the 11 a.m. Mass but cannot make a weekly commitment you might consider our “Third Sunday” choir, which rehearses only the first and third Wednesdays of the month and sings once monthly at the 11 a.m. Mass on the third Sunday. Questions? Contact Ken Sotak or Paul Scavone at the rectory (773) 736-6060.
New Choir Season Begins
The Music of the Masters series is presented as a part of our parish music program with a focus on sacred and instrumental music that is fitting for our sacred space but extends beyond the scope of our liturgical worship celebrations. The following is our list of this year’s offerings. As always, the programs are without ticket and without charge. Sunday, October 9, 2016 beginning at 3:30 pm – Organ Recital Please join us for the first of this year’s four programs on Sunday, October 9 for an organ recital presented by Craig Cramer, Professor of Organ and Artist in Residence at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. One of the most traveled organists of his generation, Craig maintains an active recital career having performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Canada.
Upcoming programs
Sunday, December 4, 2016 - Handel Messiah, Part I - the Basilica Choir, soloists and instrumentalists will continue an annual tradition of the presentation of Part I of Handel’s Messiah. Join us and begin the sa-cred time of year with the music and text of Handel’s great work, the perfect reflection on the Advent and Christmas seasons. February 2017 - Rise - At the end of February, the Basilica Christian Band will present a program of con-temporary reflections on sacred and spiritual texts. Come and experience a heart-felt evening of Christian Praise. Sunday, March 12, 2017 - Music from Ireland featuring the Music of Michael McGlynn - For our final program for the season we will be joined by Michael McGlynn, composer and director of the acclaimed choral group Anuna. The program will highlight Michael’s music as well as music of the Irish composer Charles Stanford, and traditional music rooted within the Irish tradition.

Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 25, 2016
Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, talent and treasure,
in response to the great gifts God has given us.
“My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established…” - Luke 16:25-26
When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the chasm in the next life.
The US Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship tells us that a steward is one who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cultivates them responsibly, shares them lovingly and in justice, and returns them with increase to the Lord:
∗ we receive God’s gifts gratefully through prayer and worship focused on thanksgiving;
∗ we cultivate them responsibly through formation and education focused on learning more about stewardship and how to be better stewards;
∗ we share our gifts lovingly and in justice when we share them with others, especially the less fortunate; and
∗ we can return them with increase to the Lord by giving adequately to the Lord’s instrument here on earth, our Church.

The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.
The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament.
