Entered as second-class matter, March 25, 1923, by the Postoffice, Ban Francisco, California, under

Act of March 3, 1879.

Vol. XIII San Francisco, California, September 22, 1934 No. 37

Intimate Ta& With the Radio Audience t`6 II O err is human"-sayeth the sage. Some

./ mistakes are so ludicrous they are obvi- ously not errors but accidents. In a previous editorial, BROADCAST WEEKLY made such a mistake. To our readers, particularly those in the state of Washington, we apologize. Mount Rainier is in Western Washington, and we would have no one believe to the con- trary.

This incident, however, did serve one worthwhile purpose. It caused many of our good friends in Washington to reveal and express themselves. Of the kindliness and forbearance manifested in these welcome let- ters we are sincerely appreciative. You who have not written-do not wait until we com- mit another editorial sin, or we give you due warning that it will indeed be heinous.

Think not of BROADCAST WEEKLY as just another paper. Consider it as your personal medium of expression and radio informant. Look to it as the mouthpiece of Radio's real friends, the clearing house of intelligent radio criticism and opinion. Let all of us be partners and work together to direct and con- trol Radio so that it may accomplish the greatest good for the greatest number and give the world in this hour of doubt and fear the inspiration, encouragement, and spiritual faith and solace it so sorely needs.

The voice of a publication is powerful and persuasive only so long as it really repre- sents the aroused conscience and expressed determination of an important or extensive part of the population. Its influence can be no greater than the number of its active constituents.

Whatever our own sincerity and ambition in trying to represent you faithfully and adapt BROADCAST WEEKLY better to serve your Radio purposes and interests, we can achieve our goal and yours only to the extent you make possible. Necessary as is an occasional

postcard or letter to stations or sponsors direct, you know from experience how piti- fully weak is one small voice among millions. Results can be greatly expanded and accele- rated by organized expression and activity.

As so many individuals without the oppor- tunity or desire of concerted self-expression, no group can hope to make rapid or exten- sive progress towards its ideal. Without an alert and courageous "champion," any cause invites defeat.

These statements are intended neither as self -exaltation nor as a homily to any por- tion of our readers. Interpret them rather as a simple heart-to-heart talk among mem- bers of the same family . . a frank expo- sition of your problems and ours inspired by our mutual interests as Radio's representative audience on whom rests the responsibility of its future . . a plea for your thoughtful, active, and whole -hearted coöperation with BROADCAST WEEKLY in transmuting your wishes and ideals into Radio realities.

Radio has its implacable critics and its powerful competitors. It has enemies, many of whom are simultaneously the enemies of society, of America, and of everything that liberty -loving Christian people hold dear. These enemies have attacked the Church of God with a ferocity and abandon that savors of savagery. Now it is openly alleged that the radio audience is made up mostly of half-wits and nincompoomps, people consid- erably below par both in erudition and innate intelligence.

The triumph of such forces would mini- mize Radio's usefulness, if not entirely de- stroy its social and economic value; or, en- listing it in evil causes, make it so formidable a public enemy as to imperil our most sacred and beloved institutions. Not an exaggerated picture. A "voice" that can be heard simul-

ETHER GLEANINGS By J. CLARENCE MYERS

AMERICA'S ERIC Sweetheart, who has "queened" over cinema -land for nearly a quarter of a century, will start carv-

ing out a radio career on October 3. Yep, Mary Pickford, the one and only,

will enter the broadcasting picture on that date for a lengthy series of coast -to -coast programs in behalf of the Royal Gelatin manufacturers.

Your reporter predicted such a step some issues ago when we chronicled in these pages that the great little star of ever so many flickers had been approached by prospective network sponsors.

According to the present plans, Miss Pick- ford will present over the air in this series dramatic bits from some of the foremost plays.

The broadcasts, to go out over the Na- tional Broadcasting Company wire -up, will be released on the Pacific Coast between 5 and 5:30 o'clock every Wednesday.

Radio high mogels naturally are jubilant over this biggest "catch" from the motion picture world in moons and moons. One by one radio is grabbing the big ones, not alone from the talkies field, but from the stage, dance -band fraternity, and the field of au- thors. Yowsuh, this thing called broadcast- ing is still getting growing pains.

If there are any oil companies which are not on the air right now, we've slipped up somehow on our tabulation. One of the more recent ones is the Gilmore Oil Company, which has started a return engagement, this time with an entirely different feature than it gave us before. "Great Moments in Sports" is the title, and it features the vivid and incomparable Ernie Smith, sportcaster of long standing. His chats on things athletic are heard each Monday, Wednesday and Fri- day nights over KPO from 5:15 to 5:20 o'clock.

* * *

Our Los Angeles snooper hands us the dope that KNX now has under construction the highest antenna towers in the world. When completed they will reach skyward 521 feet, a height equal to that of the Los Angeles City Hall. They are being erected at Sher- man Oaks, a suburb. The unveiling is sched- uled for some time early in October.

Cap'n Dobbsie and his faithful man Fri- day (alias Wee Willie) say howdy, cheerio and so on to the NCBS (KQW-KJBS) audience for the first time Thursday, Sep- tember 27, when they start a series of weekly programs over that chain. The programs are to be sponsored jointly by the Stewart War- ner Radio Company and Sherman Clay, Cali- fornia music house, and will be staged in one

of the studios at the Sherman Clay building in San Francisco. The hour will be from 3:30 to 4 o'clock every Thursday. Dobbsie, as he has done for years in all his preceding radio programs, will introduce guest artists on his programs. The noted radio skipper and his side -kick are likewise broadcasting over the Don Lee chain in California for the same radio company several mornings a week.

The CBS reports that manufacturers of Acme lead has started a new program, featur- ing Smilin' Ed McConnell, one-man show, who portrays as many as seven different characters. It is a quarter-hour event, re- leased over the chain each Thursday morn- ing from 8:30 to 8:45 o'clock.

* * *

Leslie Howard, the English actor and motion picture celebrity, has been approached by the sponsors of the Hall of Fame pro- gram, to appear on that broadcast over the NBC wire -up soon, according to a late issue of Variety.

* * *

Seems like the NBC in New York is put- ting all its importations from the West in one basket. Recently Irving Kennedy, who is now a staff artist of the network in New York; Tommy Harris and Armand Girard, the latest to be drafted by the eastern office, all appeared on the same program. It was the Week -End Revue. Dial it on Saturdays from 11:30 a. m. to 12:30 p. m., on KPO the first half-hour and KGO the second. You may get to hear them again. Latest dope from Gotham says that Tommy has been signed to appear on two programs a week and Girard for the same number.

* * *

The Morgan Productions, who are occupy- ing the old KFWI studios in the basement of the Bellevue Hotel in San Francisco, are presenting serial script acts over KQW and KJBS. "Warner Lester, the Man -hunter," is released each Wednesday night over KQW from 8:15 to 8:45. The characters are por- trayed by Bill Packer, Eileen Palmer, Lynn Morley, Will Vedder, Jack Moyles, and Joel Coffield. "Bill and Coo," depicting the esca- pades of a newlywed couple, is broadcast over the NCBS (KQW and KJBS) five days a week-Monday to Friday inclusive-at 4:15 p. m. The principles are Lynn Morley and Bill Packer.

Two new nightly acts are announced by KTAB. Itchy and Scratchy, who combine the ridiculous with harmonious music, are strutting before the mikes nightly at eight o'clock. The second feature, monickered Opie

and Viney, is a comedy strip, the principals of which are Dorothy Waters, ex stage comedienne, and Grant Maxwell, the station's production chief.

Scott Weakley has just recently been named production manager of KROW, Oak- land.

* * *

Jimmy Grier, whose dance band has gone places in the radio world these past few years, has been signed on contract to the Brunswick Recording Company. His orches- tra will play the musical accompaniment for all the Brunswick recordings cut on the Pa- cific Coast.

* * *

In the NBC production department we found that Bob Redd, who produces the Carefree Carnival, has just returnsd to his desk from a vacation trip to New York, and that Ken Carney, who was shifted to the NBC Hollywood studios recently, is back.

* * *

A large number of southern Californians will have the opportunity of seeing "in the flesh" Harold Hodge, who does the part of "Your Pal Jimmy" in the Fox West Coast KFI program weekly, and also directs the theater's Radio School of the Air weekly via KFAC. He will appear in Pasadena Sep- tember 27 before the annual convention of the League of California Municipalities.

* * *

A number of Pacific Coast radio men at- tended the National Association of Broad- casters convention in Cincinnati, held Sep- tember 16. Among those who went East for the big conclave were Leo Tyson, busi- ness manager for Al Pearce and His Gang, and C. P. MacGregor, president of Mac- Gregor & Sollie Recording Laboratories.

* * *

Johnny Patrick, to whom some five or more years ago came a spark of an idea which grew into the comic strip "Cecil and Sally," has gone in for writing seriously. He has taken a place right in the midst of the writer's colony in Carmel and making his typewriter hum to the tune of several thousand words a day. He told me just the other day that he had placed a manuscript both with the NBC in New York and the CBS, and that thus far neither had been returned. In addition to radio material he is concentrating quite heavily on short stories, novels and every type of fiction. Inasmuch as Patrick's successful radio script "Cecil and Sally" does not require his or Helen Troy's personal appearance on any station at present, he will be able to stay at Carmel surrounded with his literary work. Some thirty or forty stations throughout the world are still using the Cecil and Sally act, but they are from electrical transcriptions cut

some time ago by the popular team. Inci- dentally, Patrick is just recovering from a serious nervous breakdown, following the stage tour to the East with the Cecil and Sally act. He was under the care of three or four doctors and was in the hospital for several weeks.

* * *

KYA has signed Brick Holton, who ten- ored on the Lucky Strike Hour some time back and more recently over KEX in Port- land. Holton will be featured on the Bathday Revue on Saturday night.

The largest independent radio news gather- ing organization, the Transradio Press Serv- ice, announced at its home office in New York that it is making an intensive drive to put its service in the hands of 400 of the nation's 600 radio stations. It has formed a subsidiary, the Radio News Association, Inc., which signed up twenty-five station clients during its first week after formation. This is not related in any way to the Radio News Association in San Francisco which is en- tirely controlled by the owners of KJBS and KQW. The new unit is furnishing news to its station clients via short wave, thus es- caping the heavy wire toll. Stations taking the service are supplied with news gathered by the organization's own staff and trans- mitted for five hourly periods each day. The Pacific Coast office is in Los Angeles.

Outstanding personalities in the profes- sional, business or sports world are being dragged before KYA'S microphones by Dick Holman, publicity chief of that broadcaster, to be interviewed. The day and time- Wednesdays at 5:30 o'clock.

MICROPIEIO GOSSIP Ted Fio -Rito looked in on New York

for a brief interlude over Labor Day, and left Monday for Chicago and the coast. He was cornered in the CBS offices and admitted that the preferred spelling of his name con- tains a hyphen and Capital R. Ted and his orchestra are winding up a stage tour throughout the middlewest and heading for California for the opening of their radio series, "Hollywood Hotel," and as the dance music attraction at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Other big-time CBS stars to look in on New York recently were Myrt and Marge. They have been making personal appearances at theaters between Chicago and New York before starting their CBS series October 1.

Dick Jurgens and his orchestra, which has been so successful at Lake Tahoe this summer and is hailed by many critics as the coming young orchestra of America, opened the Embassy Room of the Hotel St. Francis for the fall and winter season on Tuesday evening, September 18. An unusual floor show, featuring outstanding entertain- ers appearing for the first time in San Fran- cisco, are being presented, in conjunction with the dance orchestra. Their music is be- ing broadcast over the Columbia network nightly.

Europe must be pretty empty now. Recently George Burns and Gracie Allen returned from a trip abroad, Andre Koste- lanetz just got home, and Nino Martini, who spent some time in his native Italy, is on his way back to these United States.

While in London, Kostelanetz visited the studios of the British Broadcasting Corpo- ration. He went there equipped with all sorts of credentials and identification, pre- pared to give an explanation of his status in the U. S. But all the letters and things stayed right in his pockets. Everyone at BBC knew him, because they'd been listening to his broadcasts on short-wave sets.

With the opening of the Pacific Amateur Association football season Satur- day, September 8, KGGC resumed its re- creations of the San Francisco Prep football games. . . . This popular feature has been carried by KGGC for the past three years, and Ray Lewis returned to the air to re- create these games play by play. . . . The games are scheduled to go on the air at 6:30 every evening of the day the games are played.... Unbelievable realism is acquired by Lewis in these broadcasts, even though they are aired "cold" from notes taken during the actual playing of the game. . . . Lewis

has been doing sportscasting for the past five years and attributes his ability to "re- create" to experience in the field and a vivid imagination. . . .

Joe Penner's duck is complicating things for his movie producers. Needed in an out-of-town filming sequence, Joe and two dozen supporting players were rushed to location. It turned out that the directors and property men thought that Joe had his duck with him and Joe expected the others to handle that detail. So an hour of valuable time was lost while Goo Goo was being found. In radio it would be much easier, any good sound effects man could have mimicked the famous duck for Kilocycles.

Believe it or not, but here is the prize story of golf and radio. Georgie Stoll, maestro of the Shell Show, is an ardent golfer. The other day he was playing at Hillcrest. There is a short hole, overhung by trees. Georgie had just driven his ball to the end of the green, and was walking forward smiling, when a huge bird swooped down out of the trees and picking up the golf ball, disappeared. Georgie fumed while the rest of the foursome roared. The maestro drove a second ball. It went far beyond the hole, but just as he drove the bird passed over and dropped the stolen ball, making a perfect hole -in -one from the air. The dispute as to Georgie's final score is still raging but Georgie claims since he owned the stolen ball he should be credited with the hole -in - one from the skies.

Little Ruth Sprague, who appeared in Carlton Morse's mystery thriller, "Phan- toms of the Sea," over KYA, and who is now being heard in the "Little Nellie" sketches via the same station, is a veteran mikestress. Although Ruthie has just celebrated her four- teenth birthday, the diminutive miss has been a radio performer for five years. Re- cently Leo Carillo, famous actor of the stage and screen, asked her to appear with him in a network skit, which she did, and after the drama was broadcast Leo was so delighted with Ruth's acting that he picked her up in his arms and gave her a kiss and a hug.

After Joe Cook announced his in- vention of the bicycle by keeping his nose to the grindstone, as part of that House Party foolery Monday night, he received ten telegrams correcting his hilarity with con- flicting versions of the true facts of the invention. Now Cook concludes that his own version is better than he thought.

Sept. 23-29 BROADCAST WEEKLY 7

Owen "Red" Dunning, KOIN trumpet virtuoso and arranger, spent his youth on a cattle ranch in western Washing- ton. He is an authority on "range etiquette" and the leader of a crew of KOIN entertain- ers dubbed the "Walla Walla Sod -Busters."

It was the cigarette lighter of Travis Hale, member of the Three Cheers, that saved the Al Pearce nation-wide broadcast recently. The power went off while Mabel Todd was s-nging, plunging the radio play- house into darkness. Hale held the lighter close to the music and is lasted just long enough for her to finish the song. Then the lights came on. The musicians carried on in the dark, while the audience was undecided whether it was a gag or the real thing.

The theme song which Grace Hayes uses to identify her NBC broadcasts, "One in Love," was written specially for her by Newell Chase, pianist and composer, who frequently plays her accompaniment on the air.

Jack Carter, KNX's "Boy from London," is reported as recuperating satis- factorily from his knee injury sustained sev- eral weeks ago in a Ping-Pong game.

The popular comedian and announcer is now resting at his home following an opera- tion performed at the hospital, and friends are expecting him to be out and around again in the near future.

On his most recent Asiatic trek, Jap- anese Admiral Nomura referred to Flyod Gibbons as "Cyclops" because of his loss of an eye. The next day in Shanghai, Nomura was the victim of an attempt of assassina- tion in which he was blinded in his left eye. Nomura wrote Gibbons and petitioned mem- bership as a duly qualified member of the "Cyclops Club."

KYA's family is again complete with the return of George Gibson Davis, producer of the Noonday Concert, from several months' stay in the high Sierra and Adele Hoover, assistant to the program manager, who spent a few weeks in Canada seeing friends and scenery.

The SERA movement for encourag- ing the augmentation and perpetuation of live -talent presentations for the stage and radio is gaining momentum. The Oakland organization of SERA have made arrange- ments with KTAB for the broadcast of a series of programs by the choral society.

' Arnold Maguire, production manager in charge of sustaining programs for KFRC, was an assistant to a magician before com- ing to radio. Incidentally, he believes that Alexander the Great, Caesar, Napoleon, Catherine the Great, and George Washing- ton are the five greatest characters in history.

Gene and Glenn, heard daily except Saturday and Sunday over NBC, are the de- light of fan letter writers. No request is too much trouble for the obliging comedians. Once, during the collegiate craze for auto- graphed raincoats, Gene and Glenn received a much written -on yellow oilskin from an admirer with a request for their autograph. And believe it or not, the busy radio comics took the time to autograph the coat, wrap it up and send it back to their ycuthful ad- mirer by return mail.

KTAB announces the addition to their program staff of Rollon Parker, for- merly a producer at NBC. Parker's name will be remembered for his capable work in the Philco Variety Show on the big net a few years back, and for many other shows popular at that time. Grant Maxwell, pro- gram director of the station, has assigned him to the job of writing and producing the station's nightly variety show.

Jean Kantner, young Seattle baritone who has just returned from two and one- half years spent in New York and Europe, will sing over KOMO-KJR as in the past.

Mr. Kantner while in New York, for nearly a year sang frequently over WMCA and the American Broadcasting Service net- work, the network in which Ed Wynn was interested. During the two years in Europe, Mr. Kantner studied in Vienna and Milan, and visited in Paris and in Switzerland.

Howard Swart, KFRC's comic par excellence, has an ancestor who served on the first American congress before the colo- nies became the United States of America. His name was Peter Swart. The congress was held in Albany, New York, in 1670. So Howard wasn't the first member of his family to spout off in public.

Want to know how Al Pearce, with a group of only twenty artists, manages to produce five hours weekly of lively enter- tainment over the NBC networks and fit in numerous personal appearance dates besides? Al decides on the day's program and then has each comedian write his own material to fit into the program. Al gathers all the material together, edits it, begins rehearsals and before long he has a finished radio pro- gram.

Before he made his debut in radio, Barry McKinley, young baritone star of the Camay Soap programs, "Dreams Come True," over the NBC red network, was a tap dancer in musical comedy. And just because he is a vocal star now doesn't mean that he has given up his tap dancing. He finds it is great exercise. SILHOUETTÉ 1VV }) %RILE Abe Lincoln studied before an

open fireplace, Bill Wright studied to lay the foundation for his life out in the California sun. Sometimes he would lie on top of a gold dredge, sometimes on a con- crete mixer, and again just under the shade of an old apple tree. But he studied. And he studied Shakespeare, rehearsing lines as

BILL WRIGHT, alias "Reginald Cheerily"

he worked in a steel fabrication plant where the rat -tat -tat of hammers upon red-hot bolts drowned out his voice.

We're talking about the Bill Wright who as Reginald Cheerily, director extraordinary of the "Cheerily 'Round the World We Go Travelogues," comes to you as the right-hand bower of the starring team of Yahbut and Cheerily every Monday night between 8 and 9 o'clock on the Shell Show over the Pacific Coast network of the NBC.

But instead of becoming a dynamic Thes- pian, Bill Wright turned newspaper pub- lisher. Seems he met up with another Shakesperian addict who knew how to set type and run a printing plant. He needed a manager and editor. Bill Wright took the job, but also became publisher of the "Wheat- land Four Corners" at Wheatland, California. Business boomed. Advertising rolled in. Wright was making money. He edited, and began writing himself. But finally the

Shakesperian editorials of his printer -press- man -editorialist became too much for Bill. He quit as publisher, his appetite for the Bard of Avon's writings and ideas completely filled.

In turn he became gold miner, mine engi- neer, construction engineer, salesman, and finally turned to the theater and became an actor, because he couldn't down his child- hood ambition. Next thing he knew he was advertising manager for Painless Parker in San Francisco, and Bill Wright found him- self entering radio.

Immediately his all-around ability and versatility as a straight and character actor drew attention. He was used again and again, and finally the radio moguls tossed out a lasso and hog-tied Bill permanently. For fourteen months he was production manager at KFRC, for years one of the leading lights on the "Blue Monday Jamboree." He was master of ceremonies of "Feminine Fancies" for a year and' a half; portrayed Captain Sutter in the series "The Forty-Niners," was the "Gruen Answer Man" in a transcription series released over 104 stations, was "Zeb" in the "Eb and Zeb" series, which ran 392 episodes. He played every possible character from sea captain to banker, and minister to bad man, and one year was placed on the all-American radio team.

Wright, alias Cheerily, and Jennison Parker, alias Yahbut, were teamed by acci- dent at KFRC. They clicked so well they joined hands on their present starring act, which is now one of the recognized outstand- ing radio features on the air-Yahbut and Cheerily, in buffs, bangs and blasts of humor and buffonery, in which Wright as Cheerily has an opportunity to give gentle ribbings to the ordinary travel experts whose disserta- tions the public listens to.

Bill Wright lives his characters, even walks and talks like they are supposed to, slips into their very clothes, and as a consequence portrays them easily and excellently. He is married, lives in Glendale, California; has a daughter whom he is training for radio. Also, he has a huge tom -cat, whose appetite for fresh fish is so insatiable that Wright finds going deep-sea fishing once a week is a good investment from that standpoint; and further, Bill proves that Reginald Cheerily gets what he goes after, for he always brings home a good supply of finny denizens from Davy Jones' locker, and he's looking forward to the opportunity of joining the exclusive Tuna Club at Catalina Island.

Listeners Strike? Et Tu, Brutus! In your Open Circuit issue September 2 to 8

various subscribers expressed their annoyance at the abundance of Jazz or Hardware Music offered over the air recently by many dance bands and studio orchestras. I thoroughly agree with their views in the matter.

Neither would we be satisfied with a great abundance of symphonic music or grand opera. We believe that the great radio audience's taste for music is varied.

I recall that when Tom Gerun and his band were here before, their music was considerably more harmonizing and their Sunday evening concerts were most enjoyable. I am wondering what has become of Steve Bowers, the boy with the unusual baritone voice, who apparently is not with the band this season. His voice and offering were always most delightful and easy to listen to.

I am leaving San Francisco this week for a short visit in New York and I am hoping to hear some real music, while in the "Big Town." I possess one of the best receiving sets that Philco produce and it Is discouraging not to be able to dial to more pleasing music. If some of this Jazz and boiler -room music is not discon- tinued, I'll go "on a strike" and listen in only to China, Japan and Russia, via short wave. I'll fix 'em.

With best wishes for long continued success of your excellent publication to which I have been a subscriber for three years, I am,

E. B. P., San Francisco.

Compares Her Own Pet Hates Isn't it amusing when someone like "B. R. C."

of Esparato, expresses himself so frankly about likes and dislikes, yet thinks it very rude for Open Circuit neighbors to do the same thing. And, please, what would become of the other pages of news, remarks and pictures if they were put on the Open Circuit page? Personally, that is one of the interesting features of the magazine. I like to compare my own pet "hates" with those of other neighbors, and, aside from that, very often I try out programs favored in some letters and find I've been missing some- thing quite enjoyable.

It will be a relief when the fall schedules are settled and once more we have a semblance of order on the programs. Variety being the spice of life, an interruption of the dance music con- tinuity will be acceptable, though there is enough difference in the quality of dance or- chestra music to afford considerable variety and a great deal of pleasure if one has the ambition to hunt up the ones he likes.

How many of the neighbors have seen Ted Malone's book of poems just published? It's like having the "Bookends" program always at one's finger tips for as one thumbs the pages through, one can all but hear Ted reading, the organ background always so beautifully fitting -the familiar poems in a book beautifully gotten up in a clever binding: all in all the crystalliza- tion of one of our most beautiful programs.

Mrs. A. G. S., Pasadena, Calif.

Annie Will Be Back in the Fall Here is a suggestion. Why don't you have a

column for children? I haven't any myself, but my neighbors' children are always asking when Orphan Annie is coming back and about others as well. I sure like the way the programs are listed now. H. S., Paradise, Calif.

We Have Been Complaining I am enclosing check for my Broadcast

Weekly. Please begin with this week's issue of the Weekly. We have been away and conse- quently I was not here to renew my subscrip- tion when it ran out. I have greatly missed your Weekly, as I did not always get to town in time to get one.

I want to congratulate the Wesson Oil people on their program of "One Man's Family." Our whole family enjoys it so much. If company comes in, the family commands quiet until the program is over. And everyone seems to enjoy it. They all say It is such a typical family.

Now for a slam. Why did the NBC change "Cross -cuts" to an evening program? Especially so late. The children enjoy the program as well as grown ups and that is a little too late for children to be up. Hope they will soon be on again in the morning or earlier in the evening.

Hope more complaints come in and maybe the program will be changed-Your true Broadcast friend. Mrs. C. S., Petaluma, Calif.

What! Just ONE Little Complaint As I listen to the sweet music from Sam

Moore's guitar, I am inspired to write you a letter of appreciation for your little magazine. I look forward to its weekly visit, and get many photos of our favorite actors for my scrap book.

There are so many good programs, why should we stop to criticize any, and if we should only stop and remind ourselves that we are get- ting all these marvelous programs free. I must confess, though, that I am going to complain a wee bit, because we never get to hear "Cross- cuts from the Log of the Day" any more. Busy people and children must be in bed before ten o'clock, and they are the class of people who could enjoy "Crosscuts" most. Please give them to us at an earlier hour, or a morning program. Who will second the motion?

We try to always listen to "One Man's Fam- ily"; such a real life program, and such good actors.

We like Peter Spraynozzle from KSL, but don't know when to get his program now. Hope to have some evening programs from Voice of Experience this winter; they are such worth- while programs.

Best wishes for your continued success. R. C., Chico, Calif.

Out of the Torture Chamber I just received my copy of "Broadcast" and

wish to add my voice to D. E. W. of Oakland, about the thirteen dance bands. Why-I re- peat, why do such orchestras as Charles Hart's have to be cut in order to torture us with "Doodlebugs" and the rest of the insects.
