Dear participants of the 2016 Catan World Championship,
I am proud and honored to address you with these opening words.
21 years ago, when Catan was first published, I would have never dreamt of addressing such a diverse group of Catan players from all over the world. To be able to do so makes me very happy.
I wish you good luck and all the best for an exciting competition. Even more important than the friendly competition is to see people from different cultures unified by playing games together.
This gathering of fellow Catan players is a reflection of what matters in Catan, namely peaceful coexistence, social interaction, curiosity, cooperation and discovery. I hope that this Catan tournament will forge great memories and friendships.

Durango was founded in 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, when they extended their line from Durango to Silverton in order to haul precious metals from high country mines. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad now hauls only tourists. Last year over 200,000 people rode the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
• Durango’s name comes from the Basque word “Urango” meaning “water town.” Colorado Governor A.G. Hunt gave the town its name after Durango, Mexico.

• The word, “Hermosa” means beautiful in Spanish. Hermosa Cliffs is located north of Durango.

• Southern Ute Tribe was the original habitant of the area.
