Evangelization must include a drive for social justice. For our
God is a God of justice. And this justice must be that of God,
and not that of human beings, particularly those who wield pow-
er. Justice pleads for those who are weak, poor, and voiceless.
Those in power are not only capable of helping themselves, but,
as Amos points out, are inevitably driven to help themselves at
the expense of those in need. Certainly we cannot look at our
current tax and welfare structure in the light of Amos’s words
without wincing. It is not that we are bad, but that we are hu-
man. These words apply to current conditions just as they did in
Amos’s time.
So our witnessing to the gospel means that, like Jesus, we first
turn to the exiled, the weak, the poor, the powerless, those with-
out a voice. To them is the word of comfort and hope first spo-
ken. And it is not by words alone that we must speak; words are
cheap. We speak the gospel by our actions. Do we as Christians
stand up for the poor and hungry? Do we feed individuals as
well as seek for structures of justice by which poverty can be
eliminated?
But, like Amos, we must also address the gospel message to
power. This task is not comfortable, especially if we ourselves
share in this power, as do most American Catholics. We are
tempted not to rock the boat, not to bite the hand that feeds us.
Yet God and Jesus call us beyond self interest to speak and do
the truth.
When we are in power, we tend to have a different view of jus-
tice than when we are powerless. So we can scoff at welfare
mothers and dead dads, drug addicts, AIDS sufferers; we can
give up hope on criminals once they have transgressed three
times. Yet Jesus turns the image of justice on its head. The
servant acts unjustly in the sight of the world. The world ex-
pects a servant will not cheat his master. But Jesus commends
the unjust steward who is weak and who shrewdly does what is
necessary to save his skin. Jesus asks us to be just as shrewd as
we look at the world. Who is in need, and how can we enable
those who have less to enter into their share of the inheritance
God intends for all?
SIDA;
