Próxima fecha para la si-

guiente preparación pre-bautismal por determinar. Necesita registrarse con tiempo. Gracias

Luego entonces ¿Por qué no somos fieles a Él? Amados...volvámonos a Jesús.

Page 5 PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Fr. Pierre’s message from the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." Here is a

good definition of Jesus: “The Man who welcomes sinners.”

Before we go further in our meditation, it makes sense to

ask ourselves the question: are we part of those Pharisees

who only see sin in others? It is a great temptation to be

there behind the window criticizing other people. That was

the problem of the Pharisees, they thought they were the

best, “good” people, and the others are just “nobodies.”

You know, I usually say, someone who behaves like that

reveals a severe lack of civilization, religiosity and intelli-

gence. That’s me, Jesus didn’t address the question the

way I do. He silenced these Pharisees by using a parable of

mercy, two parables, but the second one actually reinforces

the first one. Jesus always speaks strongly against the ten-

dency of magnifying the fault of others while ignoring one’s

own weaknesses. In more than one occasion He denounces

the hypocritical attitude of the Pharisees. Today he chal-

lenges them to explain the attitude of a shepherd who owns

100 sheep, lost one of them, leaves the 99 and goes in

search of the one that has gone astray! You could say: it's

crazy! Why such a fuss for one single sheep, just be happy

with the 99. But no, this is love. When we love, arithmetic is

no longer the same. Everyone counts for God. To better un-

derstand this parable, we could take as an example the

difference between a shepherd and a butcher. What counts

for a butcher is that the sheep gets bigger, kills the sheep

and trade the meat. When he looks at a flock, all he sees is

the sheep that are already good to be driven to the slaugh-

terhouse. But the shepherd or the pastor looks at the flock

with a very different eye. He looks at it with compassion; he

rejoices seeing the ones that are in good shape but at the

same time cares for the one that looks frail. He loves them

all. That is the image of God. For God every human being

has a unique and a priceless value. God continues to think

of those who have abandoned him, He loves those who do

not love him, and He suffers even when only one man goes

astray. And, you know, the most beautiful with God is that

He doesn’t wait for the sinner to come back, he goes out

looking for him.

This image contrasts with the image the philosophers have

of God. They have made of God an idea of stability, an un-

moving Being, which does not change. “The unmoving en-

gine” said Aristotle. But here we are in front of a God who is

campaigning to find his lost one! That means that no man is

permanently lost since he is continually sought after by

someone who loves him. If you feel lost I want you to pray

the Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd! Saint Luke speaks

as well of the joy of the shepherd when he encounters the

lost sheep. God forgives with joy the sinners. “There is re-

joicing among the angels of God over one sinner who re-

pents.”

Repentance! If these parables are a preaching on the love

of God for each and every one of us, the other parable

about the woman having ten coins reaffirms that, they are

also a preaching on the necessary conversion of the sinner.

In the light of the gospel today we are invited to walk in the

ways of God’s love, a love that extends to all those we en-

counter each day. May it be so. Our Lady Queen of Peace …

pray for us! - Fr. Pierre

"Faithful Companions" is a new opportunity for adults

and young adults who want to deepen their faith and

practice as Christian disciples by participating in a small

spiritual discernment group. Groups of four or five

"faithful companions" will meet monthly under the direc-

tion of a spiritual guide. The atmosphere will be prayer-

ful, respectful and confidential. The format will include a

combination of prayer, reflection, personal sharing, re-

flective listening and mutual support. If you're ready to

grow and want to do so in a small group of other "faithful

companions," this opportunity is for you. Contact Ellen

DID YOU KNOW THAT COR AT 220 EAST HAS SEVERAL

GUIDING VALUES THAT DRIVE OUR MISSION? OUR FIRST

COR VALUE IS: Listening & Trust

Whether an individual is currently connected with

a faith community or not, we desire to hear each

unique story, build trust, and accompany each person

that walks through the door. COR takes this value a step further by seeking out

opportunities to bring people in the door so that we

can begin to build bridges of trust. This is why we offer

some programs that may not have explicit Catholic

content. For example, someone may come see our

current fabulous art exhibit by Khadga Tamang, we

talk a little bit about art or what drew them to the

event, mention COR is a project of the Catholic parishes,

and boom, a door is open for a conversation of faith,

if the guest is ready. COR provides an intentional

avenue for Catholics to encounter the broader

community.
