The value and significance of Certifica-tion and Fellowship are being promoted more widely – specifically to physicians and hospital executives – because earn-ing the CMPE and FACMPE credentials not only provides personal benefits to

Executive Level ClassHospital/Physician IntegrationCapped at 25 attendees.

Carol Alexander, PrincipalStroudwater AssociatesAtlanta, GA

Over the three day, 1.5 hour per day Executive track, we will conduct a successive building of knowledge on the topic of Hospital/Physician Integration. Physicians, hospitals and health systems are working on a multitude of issues to comply with various stages of the Affordable Care Act. Understanding where to start and how to assess your progress toward becoming truly inte-grated will be addressed in this presentation.

We will explore the complexity of hospital physician employment and practice management and provide examples of alternative models used to achieve physician alignment. We will also discuss critical ele-ments required to become fully integrated. Over the three day course we will highlight important aspects of patient care models including discussions on incorporating patient centered medical homes, ACO, bundled payments and population health management as part of your hospital/physician alignment strategy.

NOTE: This class will continue over 3 days and is for the experienced medical management professional.

You must register for these pre conference sessions.

We appreciate that you consider attending the VMGMA Fall Conference

as you look for ways to expand your professional knowledge and continue your educational pursuits. Through your feedback, we have continued with the format of providing more break-out sessions with a greater emphasis on timely topics and opera-tional content.

continue early Monday and Tuesday mornings, allowing participants to still attend the educational core conference opportunities. Space is

It’s not easy but as practice management expert Elizabeth Woodcock ex-plains, it comes down to having the right tools and strategies, know-ing how to use them, and, most of all, having the right attitude. In this presentation, Elizabeth shows you the many tools and techniques that you can use to improve customer service.

Meaningful Use: Gearing Up for Stage TwoIn 2014, Stage Two of the government’s EHR Incentive Program began, yet confusion reigns. • Discover what objectives and measurements the government requires in Stage Two and what it will take for your providers to successfully qualify;

• Determine the changes that the government confirmed for 2014;

• Recognize the implications of the changes and how to gear up for those changes today;

• Understand the repercussions of not participating based on pen-alties that will be applied in 2015.

New Marketing Initiatives to Improve Patient Referrals

Jamie VerkampManaging Partner and Chief Speaking Officer(e)MergeKansas City, MOIn the reality of our shifting economic climate, successful, business-minded

medical practices are shifting the way they approach marketing. Suc-cessful practices are now putting the focus back on their patients and using innovative marketing strategies that bring greater return on their investment. You can expand your practice in this economy, and during this session you will learn what it takes to make that happen. You will learn key marketing initiatives you can implement right away in your practice to increase your new-patient volume and success-fully market to your current patients to increase patient retention and referrals, including:

• Attract new patients using online and offline marketing strategies;

• How to create “wow” patient experiences that will increase referrals;

• Effectively market to your current patient base.

Business Development: Effectively Marketing Your Ancillary Service Offerings

Medical practices, just like other businesses, have the opportunity to grow their business in a number of service lines and product or ser-vice offerings. As more physicians and clinics differentiate their busi-ness offerings, marketing strategies and business development goals must adjust accordingly. During this session, we will discuss how to specifically grow the ancillary services offerings related to your medi-cal practice. You'll hear examples of other healthcare organizations who are reaching out to their community to develop and further fos-ter profitable referral relationships. Strategies to further promote and grow these unique healthcare offerings will be shared and discussed to guide you in creating a plan for your ancillary service or product line.

Breakout Sessions Core Measure 15:

Security Risk Assessments Demystified

Donny Reyes, DirectorService DeliveryEastern DataVirginia Beach, VA

Do you rest easy knowing that your practice’s network is secure and properly protects your patient’s data? Are you confident enough in all of the areas of your computing resources to know that you could pass a potential security audit without having to become an IT guru? In this session, you will have a chance to walk through in layman’s terms a comprehensive network risk assessment conducted specifically to satisfy meaningful use requirements, HIPAA HITECH guidelines, and protect all aspects of your network that could potentially store or transmit electronic Patient Health Information (ePHI) and potentially lead to a privacy breach. From this session you will:

• Know what questions you need to ask of your IT vendors and solution providers beyond the standard Business Associate agree-ment;

• What information you should be receiving on a regular basis to ensure continuous HIPAA compliance;

• What solutions you should be evaluating.

A brief overview of the implementation of solutions such as secure efaxing, secure messaging, mobile device management, patient portals, backup and disaster recovery and how “The Cloud” figures into all of these will also be included to help you understand how each plays a role in your practice and in your risk assessment.

The First 24 Hours After a Serious Event

Carol Miginsky, BSN, CPHRM, DFASHRMAVP Risk Management ConsultantRCM&DWinchester, VAThis session will discuss disaster plan-ning to provide working procedures for

a physician’s office in the event of a catastrophic event that disables the medical and business functions of a medical practice. The severity of the event and the expected duration of the problem will determine the reaction to a potentially crippling situation.

Effective Documentation:Don’t Get Me Wrong

Robert J. Barry, MemberKaufman & Canoles, P.C.Norfolk, VA

John Bredehoft, MemberKaufman & Canoles, P.C.Norfolk, VAWe have all heard the sports expression, the best offense is a good defense. In an agency hearing or in a courtroom, the best defense is only available if you first went on the offense and prepared good, contemporaneous documentation. This session will provide recommended techniques for effective workplace documentation. Additional information will be provided regarding which types

of documentation should be kept and how long these records must be maintained.

Investigating Employee Complaints: Heard It Through the GrapevineIn today’s workplace, employees are more likely than ever to make both oral and written complaints about working conditions, supervi-sors and co-workers. This session will offer professional guidance for handling employee complaints, including those which legally must be investigated and resolved and those which may be handled less formally. Practical tips for employers responding to complaints, as well as suggestions to reduce legal risks, will be presented.
