Serving our business partners has always been intertwined with serving the greater public. With this in mind, WTVP will debut a new, locally produced program called Business Forward, on Thursday, September 17, at 5:30 p.m. It’s all about business, but it’s not just for business leaders in Central Illinois. What happens with business happens to all of us, so Business Forward is about driving the entire region forward.
Hosted by small-business owner, local nonprofi t CEO and author, Matt George, Business Forward features one-on-one interviews and panel discussions about the issues confronting the regional business community. It looks at challenges and opportunities from the perspectives of the business and the consumer, so you can be sure you get the whole story.
You might ask, “Why introduce a business program now?” For one thing, thecommunity has been asking for a program like this for some time. Like with so many other program choices, WTVP is responding to what our viewers, members and the business community want from their public television station. We also believe that this is an ideal economic climate to focus on what we can all do to drive local growth and profi tability.
WTVP is looking forward to building Business Forward into the best half-hour program on business in Central Illinois. Remember, it’s your show, and we want to hear your feedback. Tune in on September 17 and every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for Business Forward, part of our daily Business Block.

Check the schedule, tune the television to 47.5 and witness the evolution of education in Central Illinois! It begins on September 14 when WTVP REMOTE, the new community-based remote learning channel, takes to the airwaves for the fi rst time.
Initially, WTVP REMOTE will broadcast daily from 7 a.m. to 5 a.m. with video segments, documentaries and other resources for students at all grade levels.
Thousands of urban and rural households without high-speed internet service or cable TV will now have access to remote learning resources. As the COVID-19 pandemic forces school districts to restructure the traditional classroom experience, WTVP REMOTEprovides an additional resource for educators. Special thanks to Sid and Flo Banwart and CEFCU for helping make the channel possible.
As it has for nearly 50 years, WTVP continues to lead the region in educational television broadcasting. We truly appreciate the encouragement and support we have received from Regional Offi ces of Education, local school districts, our members and the community. Thanks to their vision and collaboration, Central Illinois is taking a giant step toward equal access to remote learning resources.
Since announcing the new station this spring, WTVP has been working with local educators to determine areas of content to include on WTVP REMOTE. The daily schedule will include well-known PBS children’s programs as well as documentaries, science and engineering, history, fi nancial literacy, music and more. A WTVP programming specialist has researched out to other television stations around the country to discover additional content that may be available.
Individuals, businesses and other entities interested in supporting the channel should contact Marcia Bolden, Director of Philanthropic Relations, at 309-495-0525 or [email protected].

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER
I have a challenge for all our WTVP members and viewers. The pages of this guide are fi lled with a selection of programs that can entertain, inform and even enhance your life. When I attended Bradley University, I was also part of the student production crew at WTVP. During pledge periods we worked almost every night on the live local inserts, so between breaks, I got to see a variety of shows that I would not normally have watched.
One special featured Pete Seeger. I had never heard of Pete, nor was interested in his genre of music, until that night. After the program I learned more about folk music, bought albums and attended concerts of local and national artists. That program expanded my enjoyment of music. Other shows gave me insight on issues, kindled an interest in history and exposed me to various cultures.
I challenge you, as you peruse the guide and select shows to view, to pick at least one program this month (and every month) that you would not normally watch. It could be something from WTVP’s main channel or from Create or World … even PBS Kids. It may not happen at fi rst, but I bet you will discover something that will leave you pleasantly surprised.

Together, the trio explores Animal Town and meets all kinds of interesting, funny and quirky characters, each with something to teach us about respecting others, the importance of diversity, caring for the environment and working together to solve problems.

NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
ANDREW A. RANDChairman, IVPTC Board of Directors
Area residents and WTVP fans have had a lot on their minds since the last WTVPMembership Drive in May/June. The coronavirus has disrupted our lives in ways few might have imagined; and still there is more to come. With our upcoming pledge drive will be the push to complete the 2020 Census. And while thousands in our region have done their small part to make sure the decennial count is accurate and complete, much more needs to be done.
The census is not unlike the WTVP pledge drive that will be coming your way August 28 – September 6. During this on-air appeal, we will be asking viewers to stand up and be counted by becoming a member of WTVP. It’s similar to what the U.S. Census Bureau is asking you to do. By participating in the census, you’re helping to determine how federal funds are allocated, congressional representation and other matters critical to everyday life. When you become a member of WTVP, you get a voice in the programs we produce and broadcast. Members are critical as we measure the impact of programming and services and plan for the future.
For those who have not yet responded to the census, someone may be knocking on your door soon. I urge you to answer it and cooperate fully with the census representative. Likewise, I encourage anyone who is not a member of WTVP to respond during our pledge drive August 28 – September 6. It’s a vote of confi dence in what we are doing to improve the quality of life in Central Illinois, and a commitment on our part to listen and respond to the “public” in public media.
Be sure to get “counted” for the census and raise your voice for quality and variety in your locally operated television station, WTVP. Become a WTVP member today!

In honor of Yom Kippur observances this month, WTVP showcases two programs celebrating Jewish history.
HARBOR FROM THE HOLOCAUST TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 9 PM
In a Holocaust story of hope, 20,000 Jews fi nd refuge in Shanghai during World War II. The fi lm explores the relationship of the refugees and their host city, and the survivors who carried on the traditions that would have been consigned to oblivion.
18 VOICES SING KOL NIDREMONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 8 PM
How did the Kol Nidre become a Jewish anthem and an object of intense interest for non-Jews? We fi nd out when 18 storytellers share their tales and anecdotes about the prayer. Some are top experts on the chant, some are just those who have been changed by chanting it. Each tells his or her story with the help of unique visuals and a unique musical setting for the haunting melody.

As a member of WTVP’s Klystron Society, you are committed to supporting the long-term excellence and impact of public media in Central Illinois. Your annual gift of $1,000 or more helps secure the funding necessary for quality PBS and local programming, as well as community resources such as PBS LearningMedia.
State and federal funding now account for less than one-fourth of WTVP’s annual operating budget, so private support is more important than ever. Klystron members provide a signifi cant share of WTVP’s annual budget.
YOUR KLYSTRON BENEFITSKlystron members provide a signifi cant share of WTVP’s annual budget. In return, we recognize and thank our leading members in the following ways: • Exclusive invitations to studio screenings and
backstage events at live concerts, such as Andre Rieu, Under the Streetlamp and, more recently, Celtic Woman and Joe Bonamassa.
• Priority registration for WTVP-sponsored tours and travel.
• Recognition at an annual Klystron Society event. • Recognition on WTVP’s donor wall and in on-air spots. • The personal touch – let us help you build your PBS
program library or arrange a station tour for family and friends.
KLYSTRON SOCIETY RECOGNITION LEVELS: • Visionaries — $10,000 and more • President’s Circle — $5,000 to $9,999 • Producer’s Circle — $2,500 to $4,999 • Director’s Circle — $1,000 to $2,499
WHY KLYSTRON? • We know you are wondering why we call our leading
donors members of the Klystron Society. What is a Klystron, after all?
• At its simplest, a klystron is a specialized amplifi er, outputting far higher microwave and radio frequencies than other devices.
• And, simply put, that’s what our major donors do for public television. They have the power, through their generous support, to carry the station further into the future.

SEPTEMBER highlights
LOCAL, USA: PANDEMIC IN SEATTLEMONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 8 PM
With exclusive access to the Seattle and King County public health director, viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at how public health cared for its most vulnerable in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. They will see how local offi cials scrambled to stop the spread of the disease, tracked and isolated those who became ill and educated people about what they could do to help. This powerful story is shared through the experiences of two families especially vulnerable to the threat of the virus: the homeless and the elderly.
DOC WORLD: SIQUEIROS — WALLS OF PASSION SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 9 PM
The Mexican visual artist David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896–1974) was one of the great Mexican artists of the 20th century and one of three great Mexican muralists (with Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco). As one of the primary advocates of modern public art, Siqueiros made his name on the world stage: he painted murals in Mexico, the United States, Cuba, Chile and Argentina; fought as a soldier in the Mexican Revolution and the Spanish Civil War; and even taught Jackson Pollock the drip technique in his experimental workshop in New York. Siqueiros was a controversy-stirring revolutionary and lifetime activist who lived with theatrical fl air and painted on an epic scale
DOC WORLD: SANDS OF SILENCE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 9 PM
A 15-year quest to expose the underworld of sexual exploitation and traffi cking from Asia to the Americas leads world reporter Chelo Alvarez-Stehle to the windswept beach where her childhood ended, and family secrets began. As she documents the transformation of sex-traffi cking survivor Virginia Isaias — a Mexican American woman whose past is engulfed in a cycle of sexual exploitation — into an inspiring advocate committed to break that pattern, Chelo undertakes a parallel journey of healing and introspection and sets out to shatter the silence about sexual abuse in her own life.
