President’s Message

Whew! What a summer, eh? Wet! Then hot and humid! Did you recharge having been isolated at home? – did you paint up a storm? …maybe this is something we all needed. I hope some things will return to “near normal” because we have exciting things happening during the next months! Note: The ASSC office will resume opening on Wednesday September 9 (noon to 2 pm) and then Monday and Wednesday afternoons thereafter from 12 to 4 pm, with Leslie Hancheruk at the helm! Contact her with any questions or requirements. Also the Loft Gallery reopens on September 12! Where were you? Our Pop Up sales went ahead in July with many vehicles driving through and many public walking through, but the August sale lacked of sunshine, members and the public. Thank you to those who participated however. It was a learning experience. A check of our financials sent along with this Newsletter indicates that we presently have received all three grants requested of the County: $1,300 for workshops, $5,000 towards the new panel expense, and $3,000 for the upcoming Fall Show. Thanks to the County for believing in us once again. The July statement indicates a large profit year to date; however, expenses will follow with payment of instructors, and the fall show. For those members who have not yet participated in a show or a workshop, please check out what is being offered in the fall and plan on taking part – you will make wonderful friends and find inspiration and enthusiasm. And note, that because of the 12 person “Covic” limit, only 2 of the workshops are not filled as of the date of this Newsletter!! Note: for the upcoming 2020 Fall Show and the Loft Gallery, COVID has resulted in the Society foregoing all volunteer hours for these shows. In 2021, volunteer hours recorded in 2019 and 2020 will be carried forward into 2021 for all shows and events requiring recorded volunteer hours. But remember this Society is “volunteer based” and it would be awesome to have our members continue to volunteer in any event. Thank you to the Fall Show Committee for being so well organized and enthusiastic! We look forward again to having a great show… traditional set up in the Centre, plus the Online aspect for the first time!! The Society can be proud of our volunteers who always seem to present great ideas!

Please note on your calendar the upcoming Drop In dates. Also note that the September general meeting is being cancelled. It is hoped that we can meet in October – watch for news!

It is also time to prepare and gather your items for the Christmas Market – it is coming soon! In fact, registration will open online via the website on Monday, August 31 at 10 am!!

More good news ... Alberta Foundation for the Arts believes in our Society too, granting us $10,162 in operating funding for 2020. This, together with the miscellaneous County grants, will result in the Society maintaining its financial stability.

Just like summer, life itself is short, as some of us have found out this past few months, and visual art and friends are two things that we should all hold on to dearly. Involvement in our Art Society can help you do just that. Perhaps we should get to know each other better!

Regards, Sonja

Loft Gallery and Gift Shop

Open Saturday and Sunday 12:00- 4:00

It is with great joy that we announce the re-opening of the Loft Gallery and Gift Gallery on Saturday, September 12 after the Covid closure! Although the pandemic is still with us, we feel confident that, with recognized health measures in place, we can confidently offer you a safe art-viewing experience. We are open Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00- 4:00. The September-October show has been hung and the Gift Shop has all new items in it. Be sure to check out the wonderful art created by our members. The Feature Artist for this show is our multi-talented member, Suzan Berwald! Remember that the volunteer hour requirement to enter Loft shows has been lifted for this year. That should give everyone an opportunity to be part of a show. The deadline for registering for the November-December rotation is October 1. Email [email protected] to register. To accommodate the Fall Show, the Gallery Inventory list will not be due until October 19.

News about Community Halls:

Effective August 4, 2020, face coverings will be required in County-owned indoor facilities and public transit.

At this time, community halls do not fall into this category as they are operated externally, and this decision currently remains with hall operators. The situation is evolving and could change in the future. Any updates or changes will be communicated to operators at the earliest opportunity to do so. How this may impact Community Halls: Community halls are a unique situation in that they are County owned facilities but operated by community leagues, and with a wide variation of activities that take place within halls. Discussions have occurred by administration with respect to how mandated masks may or may not apply in a community hall setting under this mandate. At this time, mandated masks will remain at the discretion of operators of halls as to whether activities and private bookings in halls will require this. Keep in mind, this could change as the situation evolves. _____________

VOLUNTEER HOURS: Please continue to record your volunteer hours in the book located in the drawer to the left of the kitchen sink (or at home and insert them into the binder before you enter a show and at year end) These hours will enable you to show your artwork and they are also part of the application for the ASSC’s annual AFA grant.

Please stop at the Welcome Table on your way into meetings and sign in for the evening. This is important for the ASSC meeting attendance record and it may become important to you too if you are planning on showing your artwork at ASSC shows.

“LIKE” the ASSC on Facebook and please pass the message around!!!

Please UPDATE YOUR ARTWORK regularly on the ASSC website!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MEMBER: Ken Duncan!!! Ken Duncan is a talented local artisan and Gallery@501 member. Working primarily with leather, Ken creates a variety of finely crafted leather goods that are both practical and ornamental. Ken's unique creations can be found for sale on his website. Earlier this year Ken committed to creating a special piece for the Sherwood Park Highland Gathering. After attending a joint meeting between the Artwalk and Highland Gathering Committees, Ken decided the gathering was in need of a targe so he offered to make one in time for the event. The term 'targe' is used to refer to the various types of shields used by Scottish Highland infantry troops from the 13th to the 16th centuries. Ken used his unique skill set to construct and adorn the targe and keepers in a traditional manner.

The Community Spirit Award Winners were each presented with a “keeper” which is a miniature targe handmade by Ken. Ken was also acknowledged at this event for his talent and contribution to the community.
