There’s always a pastor on duty Thursday mornings from 9-11am at the Alexandria Pastry Shop (3690 King Street in Brad-lee Center). Grab a chair and join us for coffee, or pastry and a chat. There is no agenda, just a time to check in, connect, or talk about anything that has been on your mind. Questions? Contact Pastor

Jessai’s Celebrations

Fairlington Youth has had such a great summer. Our two mission trips to Jeremiah Project and Carolina Cross-Connection were very suc-cessful. Everyone worked hard and made a lot of sacrifices to get the good work done. We send a big thanks to Glen and Karen Winzen-burg as well as Alyssa Glomb for chaperoning these ventures. Cele-brating Alyssa's new adventure with the Peace Corps in Botswana was also a great time. We will miss her while she is away but have been having fun staying in touch. We have the privilege of welcoming Kris McCormick as a new youth counse-lor. His first outing with us was to Six Flags. It was a great experience. If you are interested in learning more about how to become a youth coun-selor please let us know!

In 2018, Fairlington’s Rent Security Deposit Assistance Program (RSDAP) offered grants totaling $24,798 and assisted more than 91 households move to affordable safe and secure homes. Here are but a few of the stories behind the numbers.

A young man was ready to leave a comprehensive substance abuse rehabilitation program, but needed security deposit assistance to move into a sober-living support-ive group home. He started a new job to cover his ongoing living ex-penses. With FUMC’s help he paid his security deposit and transi-tioned to independent living.

A mother and her teenage son needed to move quickly when land-lord sold the unit. She was already working two jobs to maintain their household. She was not prepared to manage the $2850 for the securi-ty deposit and first month’s rent plus moving expenses. Fairlington provided $300 toward the security deposit.

It took six years, but a man with diabetes and multiple amputations finally received a housing voucher. But before he could move any-where he required additional help to cover the security deposit. FUMC rent security deposit assis-tance allowed him to rent an af-fordable, accessible apartment.

A mother was forced to relocate quickly from Portsmouth to Alex-andria due to escalating violence directed toward her teenage son. She had a housing voucher, but could not cover the security de-posit and moving expenses due to the sudden nature of the move. FUMC joined other nonprofits to help with the security deposit and re-settle this small family.

Our stories provide just a few examples of the ways in which Fairlington’s Rent Security Deposit Assistance Program collaborates with community service agencies to help families overcome the first barrier to securing and maintaining safe and affordable housing.

The inability to meet the $1,000 to $2000 market-rate security deposit requirements means our neighbors can’t take advantage of housing vouchers or subsidized rentals. and may quickly result in eviction if delayed payments are not made on time.

Through your gifts to the church and to the FUMC Rent Security Deposit Assistance Program (RSDAP) we are able to offer one-time grants of up to $300 toward a security deposit to help homeless and low-income persons move to housing that they can afford in Alexandria and Arlington.

So far in 2019 RSDAP has offered grants to 74 households for a total of $20,442—already well ahead of the pace of requests last year. The requests from our community partners continue to come in at record pace while the struggle to find affordable housing continues to grow. In order to assist during the coming Fall and Winter, we need the continued strong mission response, generosity and commitment of our church family and we need your help now.

How Can You Help?

Join the Club! To help sustain this mission with a consistent source of funding, make a commitment for twice-yearly contributions to the RSDAP fund. We will send reminders twice a year in March and September. Find the sign-up brochures on the Connect boards or sign up on-line through the church website. Designate your contribution for RSDAP Club.

Make a donation to the RSDAP fund. Simply write a check to FUMC with RSDAP in the memo line. Or make a one-time contribution online at http://bit.ly/fumcegiving.

Make a donation at Worship September 8 All special donations on September 8 will be dedicated to the RSDAP Fund.

Whenever you are paying your rent or mortgage, consider writing a check for RSDAP each month. Or add $10 or more to your monthly pledge, and allot it to RSDAP. Ask the church office how.

Many of our neighbors are trying to cope with limited or no income medical and health problems sudden life events and transitions scarcity of affordable housing limited availability of rent subsidies.

All these challenges can result in a financial crisis, forcing people into precarious, unstable living environments.
