Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year here at The Comp!

We are excited to have our students join us next week as we have been back since August

26 getting ready for their return. We can’t wait to get started Building Excellence

and Success Together!

This year will see a few new faces joining our team. Mme Nielsen is our new Assistant

Principal; she will be joining Mrs. Mennie as our Coordinator for the Grade 12 Admin

Team. Mr. Nick Bell has joined our CTS Department as a Mechanics Teacher. Both Miss

Rachel Finnigan and Mr. Brock Groenwegen are new to our Math Department. Miss Re-

becca Forbes is our new Musical Theatre Assistant. We are thrilled to have their expertise

on staff.

One thing of note this year is that as part of the Division’s Transportation Overhaul, our

bell times have changed. Our first class of the day starts at 8:24 am and our day finishes

at 3:07pm…that is unless you have DLR, lol. If you aren’t sure just what DLR or PLT or

TCT or Seminar are all about, have a look later in this newsletter; better still visit our web-

site and take a look at our Student Handbook.

Our student Handbook has been updated to reflect the latest Division Policies and Proce-

dures, as well and Alberta Government Legislation. The handbook is an excellent re-

source for you to check out Attendance Proce-

dures, Grad Requirements, Course Selections, and all the other pertinent information you

need as a member of the SGCHS Community. We have included a few key components in

this newsletter so you can be informed and up to date without needing to access our web-

site.

Another way we like to communicate with you besides this monthly newsletter and our

website is through Remind. Each of our Grade Coordinator/Counselor Teams has an ac-

count which is used to send out relevant information in a timely manner. How to join

your Grade Level Remind is included later on in this Newsletter. On occasion, we also

access a phone fan out system to relay important information. Please ensure we have an

up to date phone number and email address with which to contact you; you can update

this through your PowerSchool Parent Portal Account.

On a completely different note, we have some construction/maintenance going on

around us currently. Atco Gas has contracted ROGO to change out various gas lines here

in Spruce Grove. Currently, they are working on Grove Drive near our north parking lot

entrance. Grove Drive Eastbound is restricted to the left lane but our parking lot access is

still open. Should this change, we will inform you via Remind. Plan for a bit more conges-

tion than usual, especially in the mornings, until October 4.

As well, a high water table here in Spruce Grove has caused some minor damage to the

bottom tier of our cafeteria. PSD Facilities was quick to respond and is currently working

to repair the flooring. Facilities is having similar issues at Brookwood and Millgrove. They

are monitoring water table levels through our City contacts.

At this time, the tables on lower level will not be accessible for students; the top two tiers

are still available for students to use and the cafeteria, itself, will be open for business on

our first full day of classes, September 5. Luckily, we are having a decent, warm fall so

students are invited to explore our outdoor gazebo area for lunch.

We look forward to getting to know you better and working with you over the school year.

Have a fabulous fall,

SEMINAR: Self-directed learning time that occurs Monday-Thursday from 2:30 pm – 3:12 pm. Students have access to their teachers for one-on-one or small group support. It is expected that students are in attendance at this time. The school day ends at 3:07 pm. TCT (Teacher Collaborative Time): Nine times throughout the year, classes will not start until 9:48 am. This provides the opportunity for staff to meet and discuss their practice and address issues concerning the learn-ing of their students. For bus students who cannot arrange a ride, there are large areas for them to work in until classes begin at 9:48 am. PLT (Personalized Learning Time): Seven days throughout the year, students will have access to approxi-mately two hours of self-directed time. Similar to seminar, students will have access to their teachers for extra support or be able to work with their peers or collaborative projects. As with seminar, attendance is expected. DLR (Directed Learning Room): The Directed Learning Room is supervised by Administration from 3:30 pm until 5:00 pm on Monday through Thursday. Students can be assigned to DLR by their teachers and/or Grade Coordinator for a variety of things including missed assignments or exams, skipping class, etc. SGCHS has in place a variety of processes for supporting student success, attendance and expectations. Stu-dents who are not responding to encouragement and support for improvements will be required to develop a personal success plan which may include: utilizing DLR, studying at home or attending our Academic Achieve-ment Centre (InReach) or OutReach. Other appropriate programs are also available which will lead to student success.

Our students are often out and about contributing in the larger community of Spruce

Grove. Last spring, students in Design Studies, Construction and Mechanics came to-

gether with the support of their teachers to design and build a special table for Spruce

Grove's new Emergency Services Building. As well, students in Construction built the

garden boxes for the Community Garden housed downtown on King Street. If you are in-

terested in how you can have students contribute to something for our community, please

contact Cheryl Otto at the school (780 962 0800).

Welcome Grade 12s and the Class of 2020! Your grade coordinator is Mrs. Nielsen and your grade counsellor is Mrs. Mennie. They'll both be assisting you throughout this school year to ensure you successfully complete your high school career! This means that you should be having a one to one conversation about your credits and qualifica-tions for earning your diploma. They are eager to work with you to ensure you have a successful year. Graduation will take place on Friday, June 12, 2020 at the Edmonton Expo Centre. There is a Grade 12 Assembly set for Seminar on Tuesday, September 10 in the gym. Relevant information and key contacts will be gone over at this time. As well, on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 pm in the Horizon Stage, there will be a Presentation for Students and Parents pertaining to Grad and what happens after Grad. We hope to see you all out that night. More information about Graduation will follow as the school year goes by.
