TRANSCRIPT
Six of us gathered at a friend’s house in Fort Myers to watch the Southwest Florida-themed Family Pictures USA in mid-August. Two of us had seen the documentary at a preview screening. Four others were seeing it for the fi rst time.
WGCU, Southwest Florida’s source for PBS, was one of two presenting stations for the national documentary, consisting of three episodes: Southwest Florida, Detroit, and North Carolina.
The episodes launch with people bringing old family photos to community photo-sharing events and being interviewed on camera by a national crew. The producers’ point was to show the common threads among an area’s people, whether as relatives, or people who share the same concerns, the same passions or simply the
same lands. As we gathered in Fort Myers to watch the Southwest Florida
show, it occurred to me that Family Pictures was continuing to foster community bonding – in the form of friends spending an evening together.
“Shhhh, this part is amazing,” I said during a moment of chatter, not wanting my friends to miss the dialogue as the camera panned across the host, Thomas Allen Harris, standing next to a tall white man and two black women.
They took turns explaining that their common ancestor had been a white plantation owner who had kept slaves, and fathered some children born into slavery in addition to those white children he had fathered with his wife.
The tall white man and the two black women were cousins. They considered themselves one family, they said, held together in love.
At my friend’s house, tissues were passed around. We watched as local families talked about their common
admiration for a Seminole medicine man; for a couple who successfully organized a group to save Estero Bay; for their farming and ranching ancestors; and so many more everyday heroes of Southwest Florida’s past and present.
If you missed the Family Pictures USA debut Aug. 13, it’s available on demand at video.wgcu.org for another two weeks, or at WGCU Passport until 2023.
I promise you’ll be inspired.

Once there were encyclopedias. Now there’s Ken Burns.
The reigning monarch of the documentary, responsible for the defi nitive modern entries on the Civil War, baseball, jazz, and the Vietnam War – most recently turned his attention to country music.
The eight-part, 16-hour documentary, Country Music, airs beginning Sept. 15 on PBS stations everywhere, including WGCU.
It explores crucial questions: “What is country music?” and “Where did it come from?”
The answers are both biographical and historical.
The gang’s all here, from the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills to Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and many, many more.
Country Music is a journey through the early days, from southern Appalachia’s songs of struggle, heartbreak and faith to the western swing of Texas, California’s honky-tonks and Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. The fi lm follows the evolution of country music over the course of the 20th century as it eventually emerges to become what many consider to be America’s music.
Johnny Cash at his home in California, 1960. Tune in at 8 p.m. Sept. 15, 16, 17, 18 and 22, 23, 24 and 25.
