Letter from the Editor
Over the last 5 years I have been featuring places to visit in Buckinghamshire that not everyone would perhaps know about, or maybe have visited. I have loved doing the research and discovering all sorts of interesting things. From feedback I receive I know a lot of you enjoy turning to the centre pages each month to see where and what I’ve been up to.
This month, quite by accident, I found out that the location of the oldest hillfort in Buckinghamshire is right here on our doorstep. Well, not literally on our doorstep, but just a few miles down the road. I had no idea it was so close and I also didn’t know that the grounds of Danesfield House Hotel & Spa were open to the general public; usually you have to be a guest of the hotel don’t you?
I can’t believe that I have written over 60 articles about places to visit in Bucks over these last few years; not bad for someone who isn’t a professional writer eh? And there are still so many places I haven’t visited. What an amazing county we have here!
If you know of a hidden gem on your doorstep, somewhere spectacularly beautiful, or somewhere a little bit quirky, please let me know. As a general rule, I try and visit somewhere that is free for all, but occasionally I have featured places like Bletchley Park or a National Trust property. I know there are still so many places to explore and I can’t wait to get back out in the fresh air to do so.

Mayor starts foundations for new Amersham band room
Amersham Town Mayor, Mark Flys, together with Councillor Nigel Shepherd, marked the start of the work to build a new home for Amersham Band. Digging an inaugural hole for the foundations of the new building, Mark said; “I was delighted to be able to take the first step in construction of this new music facility which will secure the future of the band for generations to come.”
The band started the project to build a new band room 3 years ago, as their current premises in Winchmore Hill is too small and not easily accessible. They acquired a site at the bottom of Rectory Hill, adjacent to the doctor’s surgery and made plans for a purpose-built music facility which would fit in with the local surroundings.
Band Chairman, Fred Harrison, said “Since we started, we have gained planning permission and have raised over 85% of the funds needed for the project. Thanks to the generosity and support of local people, we are now able to start the building work.
The entrance and driveway have been constructed and later in the year we hope to have sufficient money to complete the building.”
The new band room will enable the band to grow as it now has over 100 members and wants to start a Youth Band. There are also plans to launch a brass academy.
The band is planning to make the new music facility available to other local groups, so it will become an asset that benefits the whole community.

says Phil Richards, from High Wycombe, who has vowed to raise £100k this year in support of local
charity, Scannappeal.
Phil first came to Scannappeal in 2017 following a stage 3 kidney cancer diagnosis at just 39 years old. He had his kidney removed using equipment purchased by Scannappeal and wanted to ‘give something back’. He vowed to raise £50K and went on to smash his target.
Phil says: “Living with cancer leaves very little to the imagination. The truth about life is that you never
really know what you are about to come up against or deal with, unfortunately that’s just reality. What I
do know, is that out of even the saddest of situations, positive things can happen and this is where I can absolutely
make a difference”.
Phil’s favourite saying is “You don’t have to be a doctor to save a life,” because he knows first-hand that the generous donations to Scannappeal are turned into lifesaving equipment, equipment he has personally benefited from.
Lisa Trivett, Scannappeal Director, shared her pride in getting to know Phil and his achievement for the charity: “Phil is a truly lovely individual, with such positivity for life which is very infectious. We are so proud to have him as part of the Scannappeal family and will be forever grateful for his dedication to the charity and all he is doing to support our work”.
Phil went on to say: “I’ve had some tough choices to make in my life and the biggest choice I’ve made is that I won’t be living with cancer, cancer will be living with me! So I ask you this question whether you know me or not.... Are you prepared to be a lifesaver?”
The charity’s £1.5m Bucks MRI Appeal is on track to purchase two state of the art MRI scanners for our local hospitals by 2020 and Phil’s support is an incredible boost to the money needed.

Buckinghamshire residents are struggling with sleep
• A third have experienced poor sleep for more than three years
• 77% who wake up multiple times in the night are unable to fall back to sleep again
• At least 1 in 10 have fallen asleep at work, on public transport or in the cinema/theatre as a result of poor sleep
Long term sleep deprivation can have serious consequences such as increasing the risk of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure.
8 out of 10 Buckinghamshire residents (83%) have never sought help for their sleep problems, instead, putting up with the effects such as low energy levels (59%), feeling irritable (41%), trouble concentrating (35%) and regular headaches (22%).

What inspired you to create a whipped body butter? The idea of creating a body butter started because it was necessary. My son, nicknamed Moo, has Eczema, a milk allergy and very sensitive skin. All shop bought, or prescribed cream, brings him out in a rash. He reacts very badly to the preservatives contained within them.
What’s the process of making a beauty product? Love and attention. I combine most of the ingredients together, leave it to set overnight, then split the batch, whip it and add all the other ingredients.
Is it made from natural ingredients? Yes. 100% natural. There are raw ingredients such as organic cocoa butter, organic coconut oil, organic shea butter and organic olive oil, as well as Vitamin E oil and vanilla.
What’s unique about your body butter? The care, attention and the reason for making this is what I believe sets it apart from the high street butters. It was made completely out of concern for my son’s skin.
The average person applies over 168 chemicals to their body every day. When I realised I could make a difference, I had to do something.
What is whipped body butter? A body butter is a lotion that has no water in it. It is made up of oils and butters which make it naturally thicker than a lotion. It is whipped to give it a lighter texture and its effectiveness on the skin, in my opinion, is quite superior.
What are the benefits? The various butters that make up the ingredients can help reduce loss of moisture to the skin, treat skin irritations, help protect against cracking and inflammation, promote healing and skin regeneration, soothe the skin, help to fade the appearance of scars and stretch marks, help improve the skin’s elasticity. Shea alone is known for its healing, protecting and nourishing properties; and is known to protect the skin from UV rays.
Is body butter just for your body? No. I use it everywhere…and I mean everywhere. It is what I call a multi-use product.
Alison finished our Q&A by saying “I only made this as a moisturiser for my family’s use; I don’t have a science or chemistry background. I never expected it to help so many people.”

Thanks to David Attenborough’s “Blue Planet 2” TV programme we have all begun to make important changes regarding single-use plastic, which is fantastic. hiya bucks has also been providing ideas to reduce plastic use.
The bad news is that this is only part of the problem. Climate change is another really important issue which affects us all, whether we live in Buckinghamshire or other parts of the world.
Climate change is complex! Since our planet was formed, our climate has always changed, often linked to naturally recurring “wobbles” in the orbit of the Earth around the Sun. Over millions of years we’ve varied between being covered in ice or desert conditions, to what we see today. But, what’s different about the climate change we are seeing now is the cause and the speed of change.
Scientists now agree that humans are responsible for the rapid increase in global average temperatures over the last 150 years by increasing the amount of carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases” in the
atmosphere. This is mainly due to us burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas etc..) for heat, power, and fuel for cars and planes. And we’ve made it worse by cutting down forests and using that land for intensive agriculture.
A warmer atmosphere leads to more extreme weather; more heatwaves, severe storms and floods. The rapid change in temperature and land use is causing the extinction of plants and animals. This is awful, but we also depend on these as part of our food chain, to pollinate our plants, and for medicines. The United Nations says we have just 11 years to take the action needed to prevent catastrophe – so we have a climate emergency.
What can we all do?
Use less energy - turn lights andappliances off when not in use
Eat less red meat and dairy products,and waste less food
Shop local, for seasonal products
Buy less new “stuff”
Fly less, or not all

GIVE US YOUR VIEWS ON ROADSBuckinghamshire County Council (BCC) is seeking the opinions of residents on the county’s road system in a new online survey that will provide information that will inform the council’s strategic highways planning.
This online survey is open to all residents, and is in addition to the annual National Highways and Transportation (NHT) survey which was sent to 3,300 randomly selected households in Buckinghamshire during June.
Through this survey, BCC will be taking a deeper look at two of the key NHT questions
through this survey will be used to supplement the information obtained via the NHT.
Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transportation Mark Shaw said: “when we look at the combined results of these two surveys, we can really start to build a picture of how the public views and rates our services. This will assist both Buckinghamshire County Council with transport planning and Transport for Buckinghamshire - the strategic highway maintenance arm of the organisation – with advising us on where the roads budget is best spent each year.

We caught up with Grounds Supervisor Dan Lawrence who was more than happy to show us around. He explained that Danesfield House sits within the site of one of Buckinghamshire’s oldest hillforts, said to be dated from c. 400-150 BC. With a very high embankment on two sides the fort would have had far reaching views across the valley over the Thames. The views really are quite spectacular.
Of course, the hillfort no longer exists but other historical features of the grounds do, including the statues, fountains and waterfalls created out of Pulhamite rock. This is an artificial rock invented by James Pulham of Pulham & Sons in 1830. Very little Pulhamite rock exists these days which adds to the interest of these gardens.

We had no idea until recently that the grounds of Danesfield House Hotel &
Spa are open for anyone to visit. With over 65 acres of woodland, parkland and

to stretch your legs and step back in history.
Club. The members created the Hell Fire Run, a distance of 1 mile, around the grounds. You can walk (or run) this route today which takes you past all the stunning features that have remained largely unchanged over the years.
Independently owned, this luxurious hotel on the edge of Marlow allows us to wander freely through their beautiful gardens. With plenty of seating in tucked away corners it felt like we were on holiday, the sound of the babbling brook all we could hear. Next time we will be grabbing a cool crisp Sauvignon from the bar and watching the sunset.
Returning to the castle-like hotel we sat on the terrace enjoying a well deserved cup of tea, taking in our beautiful surroundings.
We can highly recommend a visit.

Chairman joins walkers to celebrate 17 years of Simply Walk
County Council Chairman Brian Roberts joined volunteers and organisers of Simply Walk to help celebrate the 17th anniversary of the popular health walk scheme.
The Chairman joined more than 90 volunteer walk leaders as they gathered in brilliant sunshine to enjoy a walk in the beautiful grounds of Hughenden Manor followed by a picnic and a celebratory slice of cake.
Since it began in 2002 the walking scheme has grown steadily and now offers over 80 walks around the county, attracting more than 700 walkers a week.
Simply Walk is part of a countywide programme of free, volunteer-led walks, which aims to help people get outdoors and be more active. The walks are all sociable and you don’t need any special equipment to join in, just a pair of comfortable shoes. The programme runs year round, including weekends, and offers a choice of different walk lengths and locations.
Gareth Williams, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Public Health said: “Simply Walk is a fantastic programme that promotes wellbeing in terms of both physical and mental health. Its ongoing success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Fiona Broadbent, who has been running the scheme since it started, along with the large team of volunteers who help lead the walks. Well done everyone!”
Simply Walk is a partnership scheme funded by Buckinghamshire County Council, South Bucks and Chiltern District Councils, Burnham Health Promotion Trust and donations from walkers.

Chesham Youth Council visits UK Parliament
Members of Chesham’s Youth Council travelled to Westminster recently to visit the UK Parliament. The tour, which was arranged by local Councillor Joseph Baum, included the House of Commons, the House of Lords, Westminster Hall and a number of other historic buildings. For many of these young, aspiring politicians, this was their first chance to see what it was really like.
Since it was re-established last September, Chesham Youth Council has had a number of successes. They have raised money for disadvantaged families as Christmas and for two local charities at Easter, they have met with local Police Officers to discuss crime and anti-social behaviour and more recently they presented a report to the Town Council.
Whilst in Parliament the young Councillors also had the opportunity to submit questions to the local MP, Dame Cheryl Gillan. The questions raised included her work in the constituency, Brexit, HS2, the environment and the reasons why she entered politics.
Praising the work of the Youth Council, local MP Dame Cheryl Gillan said:
Chesham Youth Council is a fantastic initiative, allowing more young people the opportunity to have a voice in their town, get involved in the community and campaign for change. That’s what politics is all about I hope that their visit to Parliament has inspired them for the future. I will be looking out for them!
Bridie Essex-Dobson, who Chairs the Youth Council and visited Parliament, said:
The visit to Parliament was such an amazing experience and I feel so lucky to have had the tour. Even though we were in Westminster, the way that politics works felt very similar what we do at Chesham Town Hall. I can’t wait to return to Chesham
and to start making a difference.
Local Councillor Joseph Baum, who set up and continues to run the Youth Council, said:
I am so glad that members of our Youth Council had the chance to visit Parliament and to see what politics looks like at the very highest level. Opportunities like this are exactly why we re-established the Youth Council and I know that many of them have been inspired by the trip. Fundamentally, politics is about helping others and I hope that the Youth Council will continue to be a strong voice for young people in our town. I doubt this will be the last time that we see some of them in Westminster!

The Kings Cross school focuses on current treads like Mexican street food, or meat free Mondays. They offer bite size fun 2 hour early evening classes, or 5 hour classes on world cuisine.
I attended a course at Finchley Road which is very convenient for the tube station straight through on the met line from Amersham. Finchley Road offers a contemporary approach to classic techniques and recipes such as fine dining or Italian classics. Here you can also brush up on knife skills, bread and pastry making and book onto courses for 2 hours or full days.
I spent a morning cooking two dishes which focussed on using some of the products from the Cook’s ingredients range at Waitrose and Partners.

My second dish used Yuzu sauce which made a superb dressing to go with the seared tuna poke bowl with edamame and avocado.
The experience really inspired me to think outside of the box when meal planning; it’s so easy to stick to playing safe and cooking what you know. There are many inspiring recipes on the Waitrose and Partners website so give them a go or, better still, get yourself back to school and learn as you go!

The first recipe introduced me to black garlic which I’d not come across before. It’s a fermented bulb of garlic which is so soft you can make it into a paste with the blade of a knife; it gives sauces a deep and sweet sticky liquorice flavour, going very well with vegetables fish or chicken. I made a vegetable dish with new potatoes, tender stem broccoli, peas and courgettes, bought to life with the amazing black garlic dressing.

Stir together the flour, yeast, salt, garlic powder and chopped rosemary in a large bowl.
Pour about 120ml of the warm water into the flour mixture. Use a cutlery knife to quickly stir the water into the flour. The ingredients will come together in large flakes. Where the mixture looks dry, add some of the remaining water

Rosemary, Garlic and Mozzarella Breadsticks
250g strong bread flour1 tsp salt7g fast action dried yeast1 tsp garlic powder2 sprigs rosemary, finely chopped
150ml warm water250g mozzarella, gratedOil, for greasingSea salt, for sprinkling
These breadsticks are great to share amongst friends and are best enjoyed straight from the oven. I used fresh mozzarella (which does make kneading a bit messy!) but shop bought grated mozzarella will work really well too (with less mess!).
and continue to stir until all of the dough comes together.
Dust a clean work surface with flour. Bring the dough together in your hands and place on the work surface. Knead the bread dough until it is smooth and it springs back when you press it. Place into a lightly oiled bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about one hour.
Line a large tray with greaseproof paper and grease with a little oil.
Remove the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it flat and pour over the mozzarella. Knead the
mozzarella into the dough until evenly spread.
Separate your dough into 8 pieces and roll each into a long sausage shape. Place your bread sticks onto your prepared baking trays with about 1cm between them.
Cover the breadsticks with lightly greased clingfilm and leave to rise until doubled in size (about 30 minutes).
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Sprinkle the breadsticks with sea salt and bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until they are golden and feel firm to touch.

Tucked down a quiet road in Covent Garden is a unique restaurant showcasing the amazing food of Kolkata, India. Ideally located nearby the bustling atmosphere of Covent Garden, similar to that of Kolkata, the Bengali Canteen offers an authentic experience from the food to the decor.
The Bengali Canteen style restaurant makes you feel nothing but comfortable. With inspiration from the owners’ hometown and personal homes, the restaurant transports you to a warm and welcoming environment, with decor to make you believe that you’re in Kolkata. Limited seating is also available outside the front of the restaurant, where you can enjoy your meal or a few of their wonderful drinks, weather depending of course! Owners Prabir Chattopadhyay and Biswajit Deb Das have brought over a menu of recipes that date back as far as 300 years, as well as an assortment of either traditional beverages or some that we know and love but with a Bengali twist. Asking the owners for recommendations from their menus, as we did, is highly advised as they can guide you to what you will enjoy the most and they are very happy to help. Shying away from the things we didn’t recognise on the menu would have meant we didn’t get to try (what we think was) the showstopper of the night and that was the Luchi - soft, airy, flaky bread that melts in the mouth and can be dipped into, or used to mop up, the remaining curry sauces in your dishes. We tasted an assortment of street food dishes, vegetarian, fish and meat dishes and not one of them disappointed. The only disappointment
was that we couldn’t manage to finish all the food our greedy bellies wanted so badly. For a deliciously pleasing, authentic experience, visit Little Kolkata, at 51-53, Shelton Street, London, WC2H 9JU. It’s just a hop, skip and a jump on the train into London from any Chiltern Railways station.

Whether you’re a busy commuter on your way to work, or an Amersham resident looking for somewhere new for a lunch date, Va Va Vegan has you covered. Between owners Dave and Paul (the latter also taking the mantle of head chef) Va Va Vegan has an exciting and varied menu of breakfast and lunch options that will delight and surprise. There are the classic choices, like the Vegan Sausage Sandwich, a Buddha Bowl with different ingredients every day, and Smashed Avocado on Toast (what vegan café would be complete without?!) but there are also some really exciting and different dishes, including a Sweet Potato and Chickpea Tagine, a Yellow Thai Curry and even a Vegetable Lasagne complete with vegan cheese.
Outside of full meals, Va Va Vegan also offers a variety of alternative, plant-based milks for everything from cappuccino to latte, including soy, almond, cashew and even pea. And as for cakes, the selection couldn’t be any greater – I can personally recommend the vegan Millionaire Shortbread, but there are plenty of other great choices, including a few low-sugar, healthy options too.
