GETTING TO KNOW YOU

by Doris Hoover

“Life is too short. Don’t be too serious, enjoy life”. Magnificent words of advice from our feature member of the month, Arlene Rebecca (Becky) Tatman. Becky, born October 15, 1947, is the youngest of four girls born to Virginia and Zora Tatman. Her father was Frederica’s Postmaster for 31 years and her mother also worked at the post office. They lived and worked their farm outside of town. Becky received her early education at the Frederica Elementary School and Felton High School. After graduation, she was employed with the L.D. Caulk Company, Milford, DE in the filing department. The company’s merger and down-sizing with Dentsply gave Becky the opportunity to gain employment with ILC, Dover, the designer and producer of the space suit pressure garment for NASA. She was thrilled to be employed there during the “Project Apollo” program which accomplished landing the first humans on the Moon. She was also overjoyed when she had the opportunity to meet the astronauts who entered space and walked the moon surface. But Becky was looking forward and decided to go back to school to further her education. She entered Delaware State University and earned her qualification to teach Physical Education. Holy Cross Elementary School, Dover, DE is where she retired after 41 years teaching. She thought they wanted to “get rid” of her because of the numerous parties in her honor. Far from that, the school facility and students loved her so that the gymnasium was named in her honor. A. Rebecca Tatman Gymnasium. During this timeframe she was active in the sports Little League program and traveled up and down the coast helping with the kids playing ball games.

Becky is a loyal member to the FSC and has been a Board Member since 2017. She is a member of the Frederica Methodist Church and sings in the choir where her sister is the organist. She also is on the City of Frederica Planning and Zoning Committee, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Frederica Fire Company, and member of the AARP.

Her favorites are the color blue; Country, Rock and Roll music; singer Elvis Presley; TV comedy shows, mystery shows, and the series “Murder She Wrote”. She also enjoys watching the Hallmark Channel. Her favorite foods of steak and shrimp are on her dinner plate at her favorite Red Lobster Restaurant. John Wayne is at the top of her list for the movies “Rooster Cogburn” and “McClintock”. Becky has been collecting dolls for years and has a magnificent collection. She also spends her leisure time read-ing the stories of mystery writer Janet Evanovich. Vacations are happy times at the Rehoboth Beach family cottage.

Please give a friendly smile and offer a happy hello to one of our members and also a Board of Directors Member, Arlene Rebecca (Becky) Tatman.
