My Blog... By: Elaine McDowell Summer reading
is critical for students
to retain knowledge and skills learned in the previous year. Students who do not read during summer months are at risk for falling behind their classmates. We can avoid this by scheduling in some time for summer reading.
Although I realize reading may not be a priority for children, it is up to parents and teachers to make it one. Statistics show that students who do not read over the summer lose at least two months of reading development. We call this “summer slide.” On the other hand, students who read 20 minutes a day for 4 days a week not only maintain skills, but gain 1 to 2 months of proficiency in Reading. It is not simply a time to keep kids busy, but a critical requirement to help students stay on track. Think of it as “exercising the brain,” much the way that swimming or sports strengthen muscles—and while you are at it, send some great photos of our kids reading this summer—in all places, in all outfits, doing all things—to Mrs. Meredith Merrill, our Social Media Consultant at [email protected] and/or to Mrs. Lori Hahn, our technology teacher, at [email protected]. We will have prizes at our First Day Event for cutest photos, most original, most studious, etc.—and all students will have a big surprise with some of these photos when they return. So—please—Read On—and then share it with us. Happy Reading!

Kudos To...
Thank you ... Many thanks to all who worked on this year’s Race For Education, our latest school fundraiser, under the Direction of our PKA aide, Miss. Christine Traub, 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Kristine Perry, KB teacher, Mrs. Janis Donahue, and our Home
the students who have been named recipients of the Danaher Lynch Family Foundation (DLFF) Scholarships for the 2018-2019 school year. There were many entries submitted and considered—all worthy candidates. The decisions of our school team—Mr. McCusker, Mr. Brown, and Mrs. Smith—were not easy ones. We congratulate these students and their families: Abigail Burgess, Grade 5; Erin Huber, Grade 6; and Dakota Poland, Grade 6.
Mrs. Hahn and the STARE Team for winning 1st Place in the Archdiocesan Video Contest showing service on the part of our school. A wonderful job by all on producing an honest, moving video of HTS students.
the Graduating Class of 2018—These 17 students have been awarded over $300,000 in scholarship and grant money. Thumbs up to these students, their parents, and their teachers.
AND ...
HATS OFF ... to the graduating recipients of the DLFF awards to Conwell Egan Catholic High School. These students selected by DLFF representatives will each receive $2,000 toward their tuition for 4 years, as long as they maintain standards of the grant. Congrats to these students and their families.

A Standing Ovation for… Karen McMenamin, who has been our most recent Home & School President, but who has served on Home & School for 15 years. Karen is the epitome of a Home & School Officer of a Catholic School She has been warm and welcoming to all, has served this school in more activities than imaginable, has helped make important and lasting changes in our school curriculum, program, and building. Under Karen’s direction, we have run First Day Celebrations, Race For Education, Tricky Tray Night, Quizzo, Purse BINGO, etc. We have put Smart-boards and projectors and laptops in all classrooms, put iPads and Chromebooks in the school, provided school shows and assemblies, bought all new desks and chairs to name a few things. As her third child graduates in another week, we will say farewell to Karen as president and hope we can continue the legacy she has left us. “Thank you” is far too humble a word for all she has done. May God continue to guide and bless Karen and her family!
We wish all Holy Trinity Families a
happy, healthy and safe summer!
See you in September!!!
What to Expect in 2018-2019?
Here at Holy Trinity, we are always working on improvement to our school program. When you return in September, look around for:
Painted cafeteria
A new, updated Math series
A Family STEAM Night
Welcoming of our new teachers and staff
A Robotics Club
Return of favorite after-school clubs and activities
Some NEW after-school clubs and activities -AND-
We are currently planning Phase 1 of an update and remodel of the “Angel Door” stairway.
and School President, Mrs. Karen McMenamin. The work of all helped us raise over $11,000—which will be used to help with 1 on 1 technology, breakfast and lunch programs, after school clubs and other planned improvements to the school!
After a Collective 75+ years of service to Holy Trinity School, we
sadly bid farewell to Mrs. Marilyn Quattrone in Grade 2, Mrs. Joan
Reither in Grade 4, and Mrs. Valerie Myers in Grade 7. These teachers
have provided experience and expertise to our school and they will all
be missed greatly. We are blessed to have staff members who know
and love our school, to move into positions. Mrs. Jennifer Preston will
teach Grade 2, and Miss Nancy Hecker will teach Grade 4, but will also
teach Religion to Grades 3, 4, and 5. Although we are still seeking a
6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Math and Science teacher, we do know that
Mr. Steve Brown will switch to Grade 7 homeroom teacher, and will
continue to teach Grade 6 ELA, and Grade 7 and 8 Religion and Social
Studies. We are currently interviewing for a 6th grade homeroom
teacher and replacements for Mrs. Preston and Miss Nancy’s current
positions.

Attention Parents:
The Pennsylvania Department of Education has
issued a Truancy Act #138. The following infor-
mation is taken from that document:
“Any child who has been absent for three days without formal documentation from a
doctor or prior permission from the
administration of the school must legally be
reported as truant. This involves all students
between Grade 1 and under the age of 18. This is in accordance with the Compulsory Attend-
ance Law as presented by the Secretary of
Education called "Compulsory Attendance
without Lawful Excuse."
