NewsChamberUND and NDSU President Kennedy/Breciani Address Joint Chamber EDC Leaders

UND and NDSU Presidents participated in a joint meeting in August. The two university leaders shared their joint vision on how research can change the trajectory for an entire state.

North Dakota is one of the only states that does not catalyze research at its universities through research funding. Both talked about the 7 to 1 return on investment research has on a state’s economy. They also talked about how important it is to diversify North Dakota’s highly commodity dependent economy through investment in research. UND has its five Grand Challenges which have been well documented in previous newsletters and by the local media. Meanwhile NDSU has three priorities: • Food Systems and Security • Healthy Populations and Vital Communities • Sustainable Energy, Environmental and Societal Infrastructure

Team Grand Forks, (the legislative partnership group between The Chamber, EDC, City, County and UND) are meeting regularly to zero in on the best approach to motivate the legislature to make an investment in research at North Dakota’s two research universities.

Chamber President Delivers Message to Vice President

During Vice President Mike Pence’s visit, Chamber President Barry Wilfahrt had an opportunity to visit one on one with the Vice President. Wilfahrt thanked the Vice President for the “administration’s leadership in regulatory reform.” “Nothing has more positively impacted the nation’s business climate and drive economic growth than the repeal of the many onerous regulations on business.” According to Wilfahrt the Vice President thanked him for his 35 years of service in the Chamber Commerce industry.

According to the US Chamber for each new regulation, since the administration took office, more than 20 have been repealed.

Grow MN 2018 - EGF Businesses Upbeat and Very Stable

The Chamber and EGF Economic Development Authority teamed up to make 20 “Grow Minnesota” visits this August. Of the 20 companies visited, 4 plan to add employees in the next 12 months and the other 16 plan to keep their employment level the same. None of them foresees a decrease in employees.

In terms of sales and profitability, 11 have seen increased sales, 2 decreased and seven have been stable. Profitability has increased at nine of the firms, decreased at one firm and has been stable at 10 firms.

13 of the companies have plans for new investments in the next 12 months. Five have plans for new facilities, four have plans for major equipment purchases and the rest plan to renovate or expand at existing facilities.

Overall the East Grand Forks businesses were very upbeat, continuing to diversity their products and services to stay competitive. All cited the strong loyal East Grand Forks community and stability of the customer base as the biggest assets of doing business in East Grand Forks. Workforce availability and the Minnesota tax climate and employee mandates were the two areas most cited for potential opportunity for improvement.

Chamber President Barry Wilfahrt and EGF EDA Director Paul Gorte both make 15-20 visits annually to EGF businesses to collect the “Grow MN” information, which is included in the statewide data compiled by the MN Chamber. Barry and Paul will present the complete report at the September 18th EDA Board and City Council Meetings. Joining Barry and Paul on several visits this year was State Representative Deb Kiel who sees the value in understanding the State’s impact on the cost of doing business in Minnesota. Thank you Representative Kiel for joining us!

Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson attended the Beyond Visual Line of Site (BVLOS) event at Grand Sky. Official Air Base Community Civic Leaders Linda Inman, Jim Bradshaw, Bruce Gjovig, along with Tom Swoyer, from Grand Sky, Tom Ford and Barry Wilfahrt with the BRIC (Base Retention and Investment Committee) and Chamber Military Affairs Committee (MAC) spent 30 minutes in a private session with the Secretary talking about the strategic advantages of GFAFB and the close partnership the community has with the base.

According to Chamber President, Barry Wilfahrt “this is the strongest position GFAFB has been in” in his 10 year tenure at the Chamber. “With the change to an Air Combat Command Base earlier this year we are perfectly aligned with our bases Global Hawk Mission. We have strong base infrastructure, a supportive community and with Grand Sky we have private sector synergy and additional financial support for the airmen at the base. We have made tremendous progress in recent years”
