Did you know BCC offers a struc-tured singing and learning time for our 2-4 year olds in the nursery during the worship service? Eliza-beth Dixon generously donates her time to teach our little ones about

Jesus each week through singing and play! The fol-lowing article is a detailed description written by Eliza-beth explaining what happens each week!

Each Sunday at 10 AM, the 2-4 year old nursery get to have “Song Time”. Song time consists of about 25 minutes. It is based on a lesson plan that was created by and used at West Side Christian Church in Springfield, IL for several years. I was introduced to it in 2011 when we attended church there. The kids and I follow the exact same pattern every Sunday because chil-dren that age love repetition and consistency.

Once we begin, each child is welcomed individu-ally to the class. All of the children are taught each others’ name to develop community. I even sneak a little counting practice in as we count how many friends came to church. Then they are offered a chance to talk about their family. We then transition to singing about Jesus and his family.

We celebrate God sending His Son to earth by singing “Christmas Bells”. Dolls and hammers are used as we learn about Jesus growing from a baby to a carpenter’s son. Then each child gets to open and explore a Bible each week by look-ing for the letters B-I-B-L-E and pictures of the nativity and the garden of Eden. While they are examining their Bibles, I stress that God’s word is a true story, not a pretend story like they may hear at bedtime.

After looking at the garden, we sing about all the things God made. My favorite moment is when each child gets to hold a mirror and marvel that God made them and loves them very much. Then we sing some simple praise songs that teach the truths that God is love (1 John 4:8) and Jesus loves little children (Mark 10:14). As it says in Psalm 8:2, “From the lips of children and infants, you, Lord, have called forth your praise.” It is a beautiful sound to hear children who are still learning to talk sing praises to God. We con-

Page 3

clude with prayer and snacks (and hand

sanitizer of course )

I want to personally thank Elizabeth for taking the time to invest in the future generation of the church! You are planting seeds and showing these little ones the love of Jesus every week! If possible, could you please tell Elizabeth thank you for providing such an important ser-

vice to our youth.

Kingdom work all by yourself! One of the

greatest lies that Satan uses to discourage

Kingdom people is the lie that they are isolated

and alone. The disciples were going to have

God’s presence living in them! What a gift!

What a comfort!

2) You will be taught! One of the fears every fol-

lower of Jesus feels when faced with the task

of telling others about the Kingdom is the fear

of not knowing what to say or how to say it. “I

don’t know enough.” Take heart, the Holy

Spirit will teach you…ALL THINGS! So he will

help you navigate a new situation that you’ve

never encountered before.

3) You will have peace! The Holy Spirit gives us

peace…and that peace is vastly different than

the way the world gives peace. The world’s

solution to anxiety and stress is through anti-

anxiety prescription medication, vacation or

even through addiction like alcoholism. But

the problem with the world’s form of peace is

that it doesn’t last and it doesn’t fix the prob-

lem…it only deals with the symptoms. The

Holy Spirit – God’s presence dwelling inside of

us – brings peace that surpasses all under-

standing and comprehension!

As you and I continue the work of the Kingdom, let us

not lose heart and allow fear to paralyze us where

God would lead! Allow the comfort and power of

the Holy Spirit to lead you mightily as God’s pur-

poses are carried out!

Serving with Joy,

Burnside Beacon

In John 14, Jesus is preparing to be crucified, to die, and

to be resurrected and then ascend back to heaven to be

with the Father. One way that Jesus prepares for these

difficult things is by having a heart to heart conversation

with His disciples. Jesus is meeting with His disciples in

an upper room in an intimate setting – there are no

crowds around and no distractions. He has their full atten-

tion as He tells them (in verses 1-3):

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in

God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many

rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am

going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and

prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to

be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know

the way to the place where I am going.”

Imagine how the disciples were feeling in that moment.

They had spent nearly every waking moment with Jesus

watching Him teach, watching Him, following Him as He

did miraculous things…and now He’s leaving and they are

supposed to carry on the ministry?!? I imagine it was sim-

ilar to when you first learned to ride a bike without training

wheels and your dad would run behind the bike with his

hand on the seat telling you: “You can do it! Keep pedal-

ing! Look straight ahead!” And without you knowing it, he

took his hand off the seat and you were doing fine until

you looked behind you and noticed that your dad was no

longer there holding on to the seat! Well, the training

wheels are coming off and Jesus is “letting go of the bike”

and the disciples were feeling ill-prepared and scared and

inadequate to do the work that was before them.

That’s when Jesus tells them: (vs. 18) 18

I will not leave

you as orphans; I will come to you. (vs. 25-27) 25

“All this I

have spoken while still with you. 26

But the Advocate, the

Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will

teach you all things and will remind you of everything I

have said to you. 27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I

give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let

your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

The gift of the Holy Spirit was to be a comfort to them.

And in these verses, Jesus tells them 3 ways the Holy

Spirit brings comfort:

1) You won’t be alone! You aren’t going to do the

Tri-State Family Services in Carthage, IL is a

Christian non-profit organization that provides bibli-cal counseling in areas such as crisis pregnancy, post-abortion trauma, marital problems, and do-mestic abuse. Classes and clothing are also of-fered. Friendly, accepting, and non-judgmental, all client information is confidential. Funded by dona-tions from individuals, churches, businesses, and fundraisers. Grants are accepted, but no govern-ment funding of any kind in order that the good news of Jesus Christ may be freely shared.

The classes and counseling offered are ALWAYS free!

Tri-State Family Services was born because of a question presented to a group of concerned citi-zens. It all started because a gentleman in the community was upset once he found out that his own family doctor was performing abortions right here in Carthage. With this knowledge he rallied fellow believers to action and a Right to Life group was born. During this time the group was asked a very simple question, “How are you going to help the problem of abortion instead of just protesting it?” In 1991 a board of directors was put together and Sherry Bliss became the executive director of Tri-State Pregnancy Center.

Over the years they’ve been in five different loca-tions around Carthage. God’s hand has been with this organization every step of the way. When one location was outgrown, God always provided the

next spot. In 2010, Tri-States was given the old Printy Funeral Home. Since moving to this current location, services have been expanded. Not only are they still a crisis pregnancy center, but a place to help all families. They even added an adult sec-tion to the clothing room, a food pantry, and Sherry is speaking at local schools. It’s a blessing to see how so many lives can be impacted for the better, and Christ’s love shown to all that walk through the doors.

In 1992 when the doors were opened, the staff saw 25 new clients. Fast forward to 2015 when 89 new clients were served; 2,911 repeat clients visited for a total of 3,013 client contacts. 113 parenting clas-ses were taught with 8 of those clients taking 5 parenting classes to earn a new crib and mattress.

Three fundraising events take place yearly: 1 - Joy of Life Banquet in March 2 - Day of Fun Golf Outing in the summer 3 - An Indoor Yard Sale - spring and fall Other fundraisers include redeeming aluminum cans and used cell phones. Monetary donations are always welcomed.

For a list of classes and other services offered by the center, please visit their website http://www.tristatefamilyservices.org/products.html.

Volunteers are welcomed. A mandatory training is needed with the next training class on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Please contact the center at 217-357-3343 in advance to indicate your interest.
