Volunteers celebrate!BY GAIL MADDENWhat a great way to spend a warm July afternoon enjoying ice cream and music in the park at Panorama. July 19th was a wonderful celebration and a way for the Board of the Benevolent Fund to say thanks to the many residents who volunteered to make the 2017 Patio Sale a success. A year of change meant new challenges and new solutions for how the Patio Sale would operate and carry on the tradition in a year of transition and a new format as well as functioning at two locations. And the outcome was wonderful, thanks to all the residents who pitched in to give their time and skills to make things work smoothly.

The newest of new traditions was the ice cream party – a way to be sure that everyone in our community whether you volunteered 2 hours or 200 hours – was a peaceful afternoon of treats, music and conversation. Special thanks to Dick Koeb and Jan Norris who made all the plans and arrangements and to Grace Moore and her staff who made sure the treats were varied and plentiful, and of course to our great musicians – Bud and Judy Konopaski and Jan and Judy Thompson who played and sang their hearts out. When you looked around and saw everyone relaxing and enjoying each other company and eating a little ice cream – you knew it truly does take a village to make the Patio Sale a great tradition of this community. performed: Rocky Rock on accordion, Sally Vogel Plus 5 on recorders, Jim Olson on ukulele, Delia Warren on guitar and Rosalie Romano and Sharon Brown on violins. What a treat for all!

Resident Transit, the Patio Sale’s great supporter over the years, did it again this year. An extra vehicle was supplied on Friday which was well used, and there was even a vehicle used on Saturday to get volunteers to Encore and the Chalet to work their shifts.

Because the Panorama Benevolent Fund Board decided to purchase folding tables for next year’s event, this was the last time we’ll see those heavy, cumbersome, space-taking sawhorses and doors. After the Sale these items were given away to anyone who was interested, so the sawhorses disappeared immediately, and most doors found new homes too.

For the first time gift certificates were used. Residents purchased a total of $500 in various amounts, donating them to their church, grandkids’ school, silent auctions or to be used as gifts. It’s a terrific way to publicize the Patio Sale, and it’s also a great donation for a fund-raiser. Ask at the Benevolent Fund office if you want more information about these year-round certificates.

The Panorama Benevolent Fund Board thanked hundreds of volunteers at the Ice Cream Social held a few days after the Patio Sale. The Panorama Corporation generously paid for the ice cream as another gesture to the Benevolent Fund of its continued support.

There were things learned at this Sale which need improvement. For instance the transportation plan for residents on Friday and Saturday needs to be clearer and communicated sooner. The Saturday shuttle to Encore was a huge success, but a second shuttle between Encore and the Chalet may be needed in the morning.

Improvements in the hours for the year-round operations of Encore and the Stiles-Beach Barn are being investigated. One suggestion has been to have an occasional Saturday morning sale. Targeted sales to local antique dealers have also been discussed. The year-round sales keep increasing every year thanks in large part to…what else…volunteers.

Don’t wait for the 2018 Patio Sale. Keep the flow of wonderful donations heading to the Stiles-Beach Barn and Encore. Our year-round sales keep customers coming in, shopping and telling their friends about us. We asked Patio Sale visitors this year how they found out about us, and word of mouth was a popular response. Facebook is helping too. Be sure to visit us on Facebook: Patios at Panorama.

And bags! Don’t forget to drop off those reusable bags which are multiplying in the back seat of your car. We can give them to shoppers and reduce the use of plastic bags. See you in 2018!

The Panorama Benevolent Fund (PBF) is looking for someone to collect material and images and to provide support to the Fund Facts editor. It requires some self discipline, attention to detail and dates, but can be marvelously fun at the same time.

If you would like to talk about being “THE ONE” or any part of the process please contact the PBF Secretary Connie Cameron at 7556 and provide your name and number. Thank you for your interest!! ✦

The Nominating Committee chaired by Mary Anne Enns with members Jay Felzien and Betty Dodds reported that there are eight candidates: Ruth Brigden, Roxanne Cobb, Cynthia Daniels, Carol DeMers, Bill Hunt, Dick Koeb, Carol Lambert, and Dale Vincent.

All nominees have excellent qualifications but there are only six vacancies. Your vote is important in the selection of trustees so please cast your ballot for the six candidates of your choice.

Ruth BrigdenI am Ruth Brigden and I am running for a second term on the Benevolent Fund Board. Having volunteered for charitable organizations most of my adult life, it was only natural that when moving to Panorama I would soon see myself as a volunteer here. About six years ago I was appointed to the Benevolent Fund finance committee. Three years ago I was elected to the board for my first term. I continued on the finance committee and helped with the training of the cashiers and closers for the Stiles Beach Barn and Encore Furniture and Books. Since that time, I have continued to close at the barn twice a week.

A year ago when there was a need for a board member to take over the Memorial and Recognition task, I resigned from the finance committee to take over that position. I would appreciate your vote so as to continue in that position for what I consider to be one of the most important activities at Panorama.

Some of the other volunteer positions I hold here are treasurer of the Panorama Garden Club, coordinator of Birthday Dinner, Voice distributor, and head usher at the Auditorium.

Roxanne CobbRich and I moved to Panorama because of its vibrant life style, volunteer opportunities and continuum of care. We were on the wait list for six years before moving here in 2015. Best Decision Ever!

As a nurse for 30 years, I worked with challenging patients requiring innovative and creative planning. I saw the need for a place to grow old gracefully within a supportive community while leading an active life.

Within weeks of arrival, I started working with collectibles at the Stiles Beach Barn. I polish silver, shine crystal, clean vintage linen, research and price items for sale. This led to helping manage collectibles at Santa’s Workshop.

Volunteering more than 12 hours a week is worth every minute knowing that these funds will help all of us here at Panorama.

I will bring lots of enthusiasm and energy to Benevolent Fund board. I want to bring fresh ideas and look for diverse ways to approach the problems we face. I am asking for your vote to accomplish these goals.

Cynthia DanielsI am very interested in serving Panorama as a Benevolent Fund Trustee. My background includes being an Executive Administrative Assistant for Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Human Resources Department, from which I took an early retirement. I then served as an Executive Assistant to the President of a small Reproductive Healthcare corporation, Mayer Laboratories.

My educational background includes a B.A. in English Literature and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, with a specialization in Alcohol and Chemical Dependency. My Master’s Degree internships included an Outpatient Chemical Dependency Counsellor for Merritt-Peralta Institute, and a family counsellor for Planned Parenthood.

Long before moving here, I learned of the Benevolent Fund from a friend who is very active in the Fund. We worked together for the Redwood Coast Medical Services (RCMS) all-volunteer Shamli Hospice program. I was the Hospice Advisory Council Chair and he was a committed volunteer. Additionally, I served nine years on the RCMS Board of Directors, as an Executive Committee member, Hospice fundraiser, and the Board Human Resources liaison. I am now the Panorama Pet Partners Publications Director and a Social Assistance Volunteer for the Benevolent Fund.

The Benevolent Fund is an outstanding organization. Whether or not I am elected to the Board, I hope I can continue to be of value to the Fund’s fine mission.

Carol DeMersI hold a BS degree in Sociology plus two years of post-graduate study. For twenty-five years I was a Social Worker for the State of WA, assisting clients in Child Protective Services and in Aging and Disability Services. After retirement, I was a Guardian for Senior Guardianship Services for five years.

Soon after coming to Panorama in 2015, I became an active volunteer. First, I served as a Social Assistance Volunteer for two clients of the Benevolent Fund Assistance Program. Currently I am co-chair of the membership committee charged with the important task of meeting with every new resident to present the goals of the BF. I am a member of the Benevolent Fund acquisitions team which selects items for the Stiles Beach Barn. In addition, I assist and represent my neighbors in the Map Your Neighborhood Program. I

also arrange flowers for the C & R residents and I plan to sing in the chorus beginning this Fall.

My background in Social Services and my demonstrated motivation to serve others fit well with the mission of the Panorama Benevolent Fund. I would be grateful for your vote for the position of Trustee of the Panorama Benevolent Fund Board.

Bill HuntI graduated from West Point in 1966 with a BS degree. I served in Vietnam and then in 1970 went to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania for my MBA degree. I served in various comptroller positions for military hospitals in the United States and Germany. I also served as the congressional liaison for financial resources for the Army Surgeon General at the Pentagon for 4 years. After retiring from the Army in 1986, I earned the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations and started my own business as a financial advisor for small businesses and individuals. In 2012, after 26 years in the business in Colorado and Olympia, I sold my business and retired after moving to Panorama.

Richard KoebBefore retiring from Weyerhaeuser after 25 years, I was President of Timberline Village Homeowners Association in Packwood, where we had a family cabin for over 25 years. After retirement, I enjoyed volunteering as a tutor at Life Center School in Tacoma. We also purchased two travel agencies in the Tacoma area.

After my wife, Diane, retired from Weyerhaeuser, we hit the road with our fifth wheel for about 10 years. During that time we enjoyed working at Denali Princess Lodge in Denali, Alaska and Walt Disney World in Orlando. When we decided to “settle down”, we moved to Chimacum to an RV community where I served several years on the Board as Treasurer. When we were considering Panorama, the Benevolent Fund was one of the Panorama activities that really made it clear for Diane and me that this is a community that cares about their residents. It definitely helped us to make a final decision as to what path we would take next in our retirement. I am humbled to be asked to serve as a Benevolent Fund Trustee.

Carol LambertI am a candidate for a second 3 year term as Benevolent Fund Trustee. I was Treasurer of Panorama C.A.R.E. and a trustee of the Benevolent Fund. I also work at Gift’s Etc. and as a volunteer greeter at the C&R

I have been at Panorama for 11 years coming from Springfield, OR. I have worked in accounting for over 40 years. I believe that my accounting background, loving to talk and wanting the best for Panorama residents makes me a good candidate.

I appreciate your consideration of my candidacy.

Dale VincentMy wife, Georgia, and I have lived in Panorama since 2009. We’ve both been involved in many volunteer activities.

We both attended the University of Washington, and my BA degree is in philosophy. I worked for Pacific Northwest Bell, and then US West Communications for 33 years. I was transferred to Olympia from Seattle as the local manager for PNB in 1977

We’ve always been active in the community. I served as President of the Seattle Jaycees, President of the Olympia Chamber of Commerce, President of United Way of Thurston County and President of the Olympia Rotary Club. I was a member of Governor Booth Gardner’s transition team, and worked as a lobbyist in Olympia and Washington, D.C.

I was on the original board of directors for the new Vancouver Washington Community Foundation and as President of the Homeowners Association for a timeshare resort, Surfcrest, on the Washington Coast.

At Panorama I’ve volunteered in the Patio Sale, worked as volunteer driver for Resident Transit, volunteered on PCTV, been a member of KPAN and Kaleidoscope, and served as Master of Ceremonies for a number of Panorama events. I chaired the Panorama Republicans for five years, was a member of the Panorama Foundation Advisory Committee, and chaired Panorama’s Phase III Task Force. I’ve been a member of the Panorama Benevolent Fund Board of Trustees for three years, and was President of the Benevolent Fund last year.

I would enjoy the opportunity of serving on the Benevolent Fund Board for another three year term.
