Spooky Special Psychic Evening Step into the unknown this Halloween as we open
the doors for a ‘spooky special’ Psychic Evening
on Saturday 28th October.
Take the chance with a pack of cards and energise
with mind blowing psychic readings whilst predicting
your future in wax. Dare to be different and bring out
your scariest Halloween costume with prizes for the
best fancy dress. We will also have a selection of (not-
just-for-children) ghoulishly good games – remember
apple bobbing? - and dangerously delicious food for
you to enjoy.
So on another note what do you get when you cross a
witch with sand? A sandwich!
Doors open at 7.00 pm. Free entry… all welcome!
Tough Mudder at Cholmondeley Castle Aqueduct Marina had a 14
strong team in the Tough
Mudder at Cholmondeley Castle
on Saturday 9th September,
raising money for Anne’s Wish
(Muscular Dystrophy).
The Team members were: Robert
Parton, Chris Moran, Nick Beech,
Holly Critchley, Sarah Rayner, Phil
Langley, Rosie Mason, Alex
Bebbington, Matt Simpson, Johnny
Howard Peter Smith and Bernie
McCrae who raised money for
Anne’s Wish together with Stephen
Wallace and Claire Dalton (Live for
Work) who were raising money for
St Luke’s Hospice. Andrea Parton,
Elizabeth, Joseph with Woody
went along to support the team.
We had been soaked by a
downpour between the car park
and the check-in tent and the
pattern for the day was set. After a
rigorous pre-start warm up, the
merry band of Aqueduct Athletes
set of at a “steady trot” on the 10
mile, 20 obstacle muddy course.
The definition of ‘steady trot’
covers a wide range of tempos!
Several of the obstacles required 3
or 4 people to work together to get
over them and several more
obstacles needed your fellow team
members to encourage you
through the mud, water, more mud
and electric shock obstacles.
Stephen and Phil got all
competitive and raced ahead trying
to be the first team member

around, I think it was a dead heat! The rest of us
regrouped at each obstacle where we were
photographed and cheered on by Woody, Andrea
Elizabeth and Joseph.
Well done to everyone for taking part in what was a
great fun, cold and wet day out with a fantastic feeling
of achievement at the end. Most of us would be
prepared to do it all again next year!
We have also managed to raise in excess of £1,000 for
Anne’s Wish Muscular Dystrophy, thank you to
everyone who donated via justgiving.com

LEWIS IN RECOVERY
Lewis is in recovery following
a painful mishap with a wall,
not sustained whilst at the
Marina.
Our Engineering Apprentice,
Lewis is out of action until his
knuckles are back together. The
sad news is that he will no longer
be competing in Tough Mudder
on Saturday. However the good
news is that he has a brave team
mate in Rosie, our Galley girl
supremo, who has volunteered
for the job.
Best of luck Rosie and get well
soon Lewis.
Matt - The Man Behind the Mask
One of the friendliest faces to be seen around the
marina is Matt Simpson, our Master Shot Blaster
and one of the paint spraying team. Unfortunately,
he’s generally hidden behind his safety mask so
we’d like to introduce him.
Matt joined the Aqueduct Marina team 18 months ago
and lives in Nantwich with his partner Anya, new-born
daughter Ruby and 5 year old son, Bruce.
Shot blasting is one of the “dark arts” of the boat
maintenance world. There is no way to disguise that it is
hard, dirty physical work. It can also be dangerous
because hulls present in various stages of degradation –
hence the Kevlar suit and mask.
It is easy to appreciate the shiny skills of artisan boat
painters, but remember, to achieve that “best-boat-in-the
-world” finish, skills like Matt’s are an essential part of
the preparation process.
We’re happy to work with you to discuss the best
preparations available for your boat. If you would like to

hull
treatment,

THE GALLEY GOES FIVE
STAR
In August, Aqueduct Marina
was visited by the Food
Standards Agency. For those
of you clued up on your food
production and hygiene it is a
nerve wracking time and we
were delighted to have been
awarded a five star rating.
Many thanks to the Galley team
for keeping the Café so spick
and span. I am sure you’ll agree
that they are a hardworking
bunch and keep us all well
looked after.
The Food Standards Agency
(FSA for short) is responsible for
food safety and food hygiene
across the UK, so you may now
rest assured that you are in good
hands. Our latest tasty treat…

with a cup of tea and a view from
A Narrowboat for a Campervan. Have you ever
thought about taking your narrow boat to the other
side of the world for a long holiday? Well, it’s a
difficult thing to do, but with a bit of ingenuity, you
can get around the logistics without even having to
take your boat out of the water. How? Swap it!
Earlier this year, we toured New Zealand for 6 weeks
using just that system. What a holiday! We’d visited
NZ the year before on an organised tour and then hiring
a motor home, loved it and wanted to return, but the
cost of hiring a van was incredible. Then we met a Kiwi
who went wild when we said we owned a narrowboat,
suggesting we exchange her for a motorhome or an
apartment. With nothing to lose, we placed a free
advert on Canal Junction, then forgot all about it.
Suddenly we were inundated by requests from Kiwis
offering us motor homes, apartments, sheds, yachts
and caravans. It took us a while to pick the one we
wanted and after e-mails, Skype and texts, it was all
decided.
After a few stopovers on the way, we finally arrived in
Auckland in February and were picked up by Pete and
Beryl for the journey to their home just south of
Auckland. We enjoyed their company for a couple of
days, going out for meals, swimming in lakes, seeing
nearby attractions and playing with Lloyd, their
champion of NZ Newfoundland, before setting off on
our tour in their lovely van. This time we just decided to
stay on the North Island and despite earthquakes and
landslides, had a great time. We stayed in some
fantastic places and camping over there is
unbelievable. Many campsites are free and in fantastic
locations, some are only a couple of dollars per night
and all are spotless. It was just like being in the Lord of
the Rings film set, in fact we stayed at Rivendell and
Moorers’ Moments
Mount Doom! We even stayed for free on a vineyard
owned by an ex all Black and helped him out at a village
fete showcasing his wines!
Finally after many adventures we returned. In July, Pete
and Beryl came to us, stayed in our home and then off
they went on Tiller Girl. They had been on narrow boats
previously and were experienced exchangers, so
everything went well and they have become firm friends.
Exchanging involves a lot of trust. We didn’t do
simultaneous exchanges, as we wanted to be sure that if
things did break down, we were on hand. It also tied in
with the two sets of summers. Fortunately nothing went
amiss. We made sure the boat was a home from home
and had been serviced etc, plus checked that doing an
exchange was fine with our insurance as no money was
changing hands. In NZ, we were put as extra drivers on
Pete’s insurance at no cost to anyone, just that if things
did go wrong, we would pay the agreed excess.
We loved it so much and had so many offers, we’re off
again in 2018 and 2019 with other exchangers as Pete
and Beryl had already sorted out for those times. On our
next excursion, we will do both islands and will miss
winter yet again!
The world is your oyster if you have a boat! If you want
to know more or further information, please get in touch
with us through the office.

We always want to hear from you, if you have any stories
which you would like to share please get in touch with

Peter Mowbray nb Chrysalis, has been moored at
Aqueduct Marina for several years.
Peter has spread his wings and moved down to
Nuneaton this week.
Peter, who lives in North Wales, was a frequent
visitor to the Galley Café and assures us he will still
call in. With a lot of family down south, Peter felt it
was time to move nb Chrysalis closer to them. His
boat was gantry lifted onto a Richard Dempster lorry
by our helpful team for the journey south.
Best of luck with the move – we wish you all the best
for the future.

After a long fight against cancer Paul Mills, who won the
Towpath Talk Volunteer Award for 2016, passed away on
7th September.
Paul will be remembered by many Shropshire Union
Canal users for all the improvements he made to the area
since 1992 whilst fundraiser and project officer on behalf
of SUCS and later as organiser of STTV.
Many of his projects such as installation of picnic tables,
benches, visitor mooring rings and especially the Coole
Pilate picnic area contributed to C&RT gaining a Green
Flag award for that area.
Paul’s leadership and
fundraising ability will
be greatly missed.

Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina’s caravan site is
coming to the end of its first full season in operation.
Over the Spring and Summer (do you remember that
heat wave in June?!) we had plenty of caravans,
motorhomes and campervans staying from one
night to several weeks.
We have been fully booked most Saturday nights
all year. The weekends when there is a large
event locally, such as the Car Fest North, the
pitches have been in great demand. So if you
need a pitch when Car Fest, Oulton Park,
Nantwich Food Festival, New Year, Easter etc
take place, please book early. We handle all our
site bookings via our website http://
www.aqueductmarina.co.uk/caravan-park/aqueduct-
caravan-park-bookings/
Don’t forget the site is open all year and with stone, hard
pitches, so no getting stuck. We also have a field that
can be used for caravan rallies, so if you are a member of
a club looking for a venue please get in touch on

North Wales & Borders Annual Showcase The Canal & River Trust’s North Wales & Borders Partnership will be hosting
its annual public showcase in Northwich on Friday 13 October - and every-
one’s invited.
More than 40 organisations are expected to have stands at the showcase,
which is being held in Northwich’s Memorial Court, in the town centre.
The programme opens at 9.45 am with 45 minutes of presentations. Guests
will then have chance to view displays and network with Trust staff and other
waterway groups and local organisations. The public are invited to attend
both the formal presentation and/or drop in anytime during the day between
10.30 am and 4.00 pm.
Aqueduct Marina will have a stand.
Boat Painting at Aqueduct Marina After successfully
completing our first work
boat “Blaby”, we now have a
respectable line up of C&RT
craft at the marina, for either
blacking only or more major
complete overhauls.
The boats are a combination of
tugs, hoppers, and workboats.
Should you see Blaby while out
cruising please send us a
picture. It has been great for
Aqueduct Marina to have
planned scheduled work in
place, it is excellent to see
C&RT now starting to take the
maintenance of their working
fleet seriously, hopefully as you
travel the network you will see
them working hard repairing
and maintaining the canal
network.
We have the skills onsite to
carry out virtually any type of
narrowboat maintenance work,
electrics, plumbing, joinery,
fabrication and much more
besides. Should you have any
work that you would like pricing
and scheduling please get in
touch as the winter diary is
already filling up fast.
Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina has been
successful in applying for a Cheshire East,
European Rural Development grant to help pay for
the recent improvements to the new workshop.
The work carried out includes new concrete floors, roller
shutter doors, an internal partition and installing electrics
and lighting. We are also about to put in a heating
system. This has already had a positive impact on the
painting process as we now have a step system with
multiple boats at different stages in the procedure,
allowing us to complete boats more reliably, efficiently
and consistently. We believe
we now have one of the best
narrow boat painting facilities
around with a comprehensive process starting with
shotblasting to give the best possible surface to work
from, spraying on a 2 pack black and completing with a
hand painted
gloss finish.
We are also
now offering a
Zinga hull
coating, which
gives a
superb degree of hull protection against Galvanic
corrosion.
Should you be interested in a complete cabin repaint
and or any bottom blacking hull protection from bitumen
to Zinga coating - and don’t forget we can also do base
plates - please contact us on

C&RT Workboats
Small Tasks Team Volunteers Through the season STTV have been busy here and
there!
Ellesmere
There was an innovation at Ellesmere this year. The
people on the boats moored on the arm felt that it was
unfortunate that we took folk from the town to the yard,
bypassing the boats. We debated what to do… but
C&RT made a decision, and it worked!
Roger Birch operated a quick crossing using a pontoon.
This was highly successful, carrying over 1,000 people!
We ran the trip boat from the end of the arm (near the
pontoon) to the winding hole and back. This made it a
longer trip of about 30 minutes, which was enjoyed by
many people… so many that a booking system had to be
operated.
The stall also generated quite a lot of interest, and made
some money!
Calveley
On 24th August the group tackled various jobs at
Calveley. There was a
good deal of painting…
and adding top dressing
to the steps that we had
made earlier.
Whitchurch
Shortly after this we were to be found at the Whitchurch
Boat Festival. It was, to borrow the football
commentator’s phrase, an event of two halves. Saturday
was a glorious sunny day, the sort you dream of.
Sunday was altogether rather bleak, but actually not
quite as bad as the forecast!
Once again the trip boat was a popular attraction. We
are much indebted to C&RT for making the boat
available, and to the generous public who donated funds.
