TRANSCRIPT
Greetings,
On August 6th, the club held its Annual Picnic at the Polish Legion of American
Veterans Park. The morning was sunny as many club volunteers met to set up
for this event. By early afternoon there was a rain shower but that didn’t stop
125 members and guests from dancing all afternoon. A big thanks to Leo and
Marge Brennen along with Jan Vroman for chairing this event. It was nice to
see so many dance friends attend the picnic.
GLSDC will be celebrating “College Night” on September 6th, come dance in
support of your favorite college team at Rollhaven.
I have talked about this subject, “Overspinning Women during Dance” before
but it needs to be said again! Several women have shared they feel dizzy
after being spun around too much. I’m concerned someone could be injured by
falling. In the past, a woman fell and broke her leg due to dizziness after
being spun too much. Please be cautious, I don’t want this to ever happen
again.
December is just four (4) months away. I hope everyone will make plans to
spend New Year’s Eve at Rollhaven dancing the night away with the Great
Lakes Swing Dance Club.
September’s dance lesson is the Social taught by Colette Simmerson. Here’s
the DJ lineup: Joann, Angela, Dave, and Ed.
I look forward to seeing you on the dance floor,
Jim

Why Does Your Brain Love It When You Dance? It Is Thrilling!
Our brain loves anticipation, probably even more than the actual rewards themselves. The
pleasure that we derive from music is chiefly related to the intermingling of anticipation and
surprise – you start listening to a tune, find a repeating pattern in it and then start anticipating the
pattern. This anticipation is thrilling and so is the moment when anticipation and reality meet.
However, too much predictability can start to get boring, so musicians throw in little elements of
surprise – when the brain is anticipating something but gets something else, perhaps even better
than what it was anticipating. These little surprises are pleasant for the brain too. CureJoy Editorial

DANCE ETIQUETTE: Dancing Close
The lady determines this by her willingness or her resistance (generally a light resistance at
first). If he/she resists at all, back off. If they are with another person, such as a significant
other or date don't even go there, No, No, No, unless you know for a fact it’s okay with the
other person (remember the other person could be you someday). Often times a close dance
can be very innocent and a lot of fun to do, just make sure it’s okay. Sonny Watson
