September 2016 AND THE RAINS CAME. Big deal. Has a lile bit of wet weather EVER stopped the fun at CYC? Of course not! We finished off August with a Tropical Evening Dock and Dance Party (shake it up, baby!), the annual White Party (talk about smoothalicious elegance!) and the always-raucous Dinghy Poker Run with aendant dirty hat party (no adult mentalies allowed; only 9-year-old grown-ups). And September is looking to be just as wet and wild, starng with a storm-laden Labor Day weekend looming. We’ll all be cheering our very own Brad Kendell who is sailing in the 2016 Rio Paralympics Sept. 7-18. While most of us will be cheering from points in North America, PC Tish Wold was planning to support the team in Rio – yaaaayyy! Send lots of photos, Tish! The Gulls and Bow Chasers are back in acon aſter their summer hiatus, and we’ll have our second Wine Tasng Club on the 10th. You won’t want to miss Dive-In Movies in the pool on the 17th and Birthday/Anniversary night on the 23rd. Every now and then we have to get serious, sort of. The Nominang Commiee has been announced (see page 11 for all the details) to help select our next line-up of officers. Is it already that me? Has two-thirds of the year already passed? Set date of the next Board of Directors meeting for September 15.

August wAs another excel-lent month for fun parties, camarade-rie and finances. Year to date, 2016 has been our best financial year in many, many years. I know I have said this before, but it is in large part due to our membership growing in num-bers and our members using the club more and more. It has also been the best year in memory for our banquet business. So again, thank you to all our members for your patronage and support!

And I want to thank our club staff again for their stellar service. We had a chance to personally thank our staff at our Turnabout Party, where we as members showed our appreciation by providing the food and service to our staff. Everyone had a great time, especially the staff.

September should be a month to remember for our club membership. By month’s end, our Summer mem-bers will have had an opportunity to enjoy the club and decide if they wish to become regular members. This summer has seen our largest number ever of summer members (29). All of us need to do our part to encour-age our summer members to join us full time.

You may not have thought about the impact seasonal members have on our club. We have 46 seasonal members who are very active when they are here, but for half of the year they spend time back in their home towns. I look forward to their return and wish them all a safe trip back to Florida.

You might not know some of these facts about September that I find interesting.

September starts on the same day of the week as December every year, but does not end on the same day of the week as any other month in the year.

The Continental Congress changed the name of the United Colonies to the United States on September 9, 1776.

World War II began in September 1939, when Hitler invaded Poland.

Band-Aids were invented in the month of September.September is National Chicken Month as well as

Cholesterol Awareness Month in America. Anyone that knows me very well knows I love chicken, so this is a month I celebrate and look forward to Chef John’s fried chicken. Mmm good!

This September is also the month of the 2016 Paralympics. This year CYC member Brad Kendell will be racing toward Gold in Rio. Good luck Brad!! The first Paralympics were held in Rome in 1960. Watch for Brad in the Opening Ceremonies on Sept 7.

September is an important month for our club each year. It is the time of year when the Commodore forms the Nominating Committee. This committee selects nominees for Rear Commodore, Secretary, Treasurer (if applicable), Fleet Captain, and vacancies on the Board of Directors and Trustees. All nominees shall be voting members in good standing with the club and shall have agreed in writing to serve if elected. The committee is chaired by the Immediate Past Commodore.

I look forward to seeing all of you around the club in September. Let’s make this month the best September in the history of the club.

WatersideBy curtis woldFleet captain

the July Waterside meeting had continued discussion and efforts on a variety of areas, including, club boat maintenance/use procedures, dock maintenance, short-term capi-tal expenditure plans for board re-placement and preservation, long term (3-5 year) dock replacement, hurricane plans and “boat buddy” lists, as well as plans to enforce the active slip-holder policy.

The next Waterside meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 28th at 6 p.m. All who wish to

discuss ideas and provide support to maintain and im-prove our marina are welcome!

Nautical Trivia of the Month—When ancient mar-iners used the phrase “no room to swing a cat” to describe a small or confined space, what type of cat were they plan-ning to swing? I’ll buy a drink at the Tiki Bar for the third member to e-mail or text me the correct answer.

The answer to last month’s nautical trivia question was “POSH.” POSH is “a slang term for the wealthy, supposedly derived from the letters …which used to be printed on the first-class tickets of passengers travelling on the P&O Line rich enough to pay extra for cabins.” I received only one correct answer by the deadline for this article, but never got to the third correct answer—con-cerned I’ve lost your attention!

As usual, I can be reached at [email protected] or on my cell phone by text or voice at 727-641-8633.

The EXCITEMENT in racing begins. The fall season opens with TWO Gulf BOTY regattas. The first race will be the 32nd Annual Dunedin Cup & Regatta Ball. This event is hosted by the Dunedin Boat Club and will be held September 23 – 25, 2016. If this notice piques your interest, the Notice of Race (NOR) may be found at their website: http://www.dunedincupregatta.org/.

In October, CYC will host the second race of that series, the Clearwater Challenge. This race will be an overnight race, starting on Saturday, Oct. 29 and ending on Sunday, Oct. 30. The course will start at Clearwater and go north to Anclote Key, then south to Egmont Key. From there, the course turns north to John’s Pass and the finish will be back at Clearwater. Anyone thinking of entering the St. Petersburg Yacht Club’s Habana Race to Cuba, which starts Feb. 28, 2017, should seriously think about doing this regatta to prepare.

We would like to see everyone enjoying the SUN and FUN that this area has to offer. So, Sail Boaters and Power Boaters come out and BE a part of the EXCITEMENT!!As always, the CYC Yachting Committee thanks you

for your support of all club sponsored events.

A Full House and a Floating Tiki Bar for the Dinghy Poker Runthe sKies were sunny and the seas were fair for the 10th annual Dinghy Poker Run. Following our well established tradition, the celebration began Friday evening with a nauti-hat contest. First prize went to Brad Wilson for his naughty hat, with second prize awarded to Susan Camera.

Our flotilla this year was a mash-up up of thirty-one dinghies, boats and a floating tiki bar. Each boat was heav-ily armed with water cannons--some of them shooting ice water. There wasn’t a dry poker runner to be found at the end of the day. We loved the nautical skirmishes, the paddle boarding for poker cards, the playing tug-o-war in the sand and the cease fires that allowed us to exchange jello shots!

whether Or nOt yOu subscribe to the old-fash-ioned rule of not wearing white after Labor Day, the end-of-summer holiday is the perfect time to rock white not only in your wardrobe, but for a whole party theme. From decor to food to cocktails, Clearwater Yacht Club had some fun party inspirations that were on theme in crisp white.

Chef John and the crew put together a fantastic menu of delicious finger food and the champagne was flowing! Our membership showed up in full force for a beautiful evening of fun and dancing under the stars on the tiki deck. JR Connection provided entertainment and the dance floor was packed all night long.

Check out the photos and join us next year for what has become an AWESOME ANNUAL EVENT!

Youth Sailing sessiOn iii wAs outstanding and marked the conclusion of our six week summer camp. Graduation day on August 5th enabled our young sailors not only to demonstrate their newly acquired skills on the water, but also to share their thanksgivings with parents, family and friends. We were espe-cially grateful that day to welcome Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos, and Sailing Paralympian Brad Kendell whose words truly inspired us to be the very best that we can be!

Thanksgivings went on to include our CYC dockmasters, Linda and Dan, along with our wonderful restaurant servers, Melissa and Joyce, and of course our Intrepid Club Manager, Tom Brusini. A very special graduation treat showed up at the pool following graduation lunch: thanks to Phil and Carol Beauchamp our kids had a blast on the water slide! It was a perfect day and the rain held off until all activities had concluded.

Now, “job one” for all our kids is to be the very best they can be as Intrepid Students at their schools. “Job two” is to take advantage of continuing opportunities to sail, and we have some great ones coming up this Fall! Our Saturday

and After School Schedule has now been sent out and our Adult, Youth, and Racing programs will bring us renewed friendships, better wind conditions and cooler temperatures! Plans are also underway for the Second Annual Feed the Hungry Charity Regatta (Ted Irwin Memorial Sailathon) which will take place Saturday December 3rd.

We have a full schedule ahead and, as Intrepid Sailors, we remain thankful for every opportunity to “learn something new each day!” We wish you fair winds and many blessings, as well.Fr Bob Wagenseil (727) 510-6153 [email protected]

the cruisers visited Bradenton Yacht Club and were hosted by Becky and Bob Griffin. Although there were cancellations due to inclement weather, the group that made the trip had a great time visiting the Art Show and just enjoying the town. According to Becky and Bob, the weather didn’t pose any problem so those

that cancelled missed a good trip. The September cruise will be to The Club at Treasure

Island. Rick and Ann Burkel are hosting this one, so please sign up soon because they don’t disappoint. The October cruise is shaping up to be the granddaddy of all. Cliff and Donna Wyatt are hosting and as of this date we have 22 boats going. We will be staying at Marina Jack in Sarasota, have live music, sit-down din-ner, and so much more. Commodore Cardosi says if we can get 24 boats, it will be the biggest ever. You don’t want to miss this one.

the AFternOOn storms have been pretty regular this summer. I trust everyone is being careful and keeping an eye on the weather while out on their boats. We were out in mid-August and strategically dodged a storm coming off of the land, sailed around the west edge of the storm and had a great afternoon sail before coming in at sunset.

The Employee Turnabout Party was a great suc-cess. It was wonderful to see our employees, who so professionally serve us day after day, come and enjoy the Clearwater Yacht Club facilities and let us take care of them for an afternoon and evening. I wish to send out a Thank You to all of our members who

Are yOu new to CYC? Have you been a member for a while and you’d like to become more active in CYC activities? Did you recently retire and you’re looking for new and interesting things to do? Now is the time to get involved with the Gulls!

In September, the Gulls will start to organize our busy 2016/2017 social season. We’ll appoint a nominating committee to identify new Gulls Board of Directors officer candidates. The Gulls Board consists of 4 elected officers (president, vice president, secretary and treasurer) plus a representative from each standing committee:

I’m not asking any new member to take on a committee chair. However, committee members enjoy meeting and working with other members on a variety of interesting projects. If you are interested in joining a committee, please contact one of the Gulls current board members; or better yet, join us for lunch any Wednesday.

Fall is also the time for nominations for the recipi-ent of the Marie Shepard McMahon Fellowship Award. This award is presented to a female member of the club

who best exemplifies the qualities of friendship and ser-vice that were so evident in the life of Marie McMahon. The ballots and box will be placed in the lobby the first of October. Please start thinking about the ladies you see volunteering their time and energies to make this club a truly great club. Any female CYC member may submit a name in nomination. Please take the time and fill out a ballot.

attended and brought food and helped during the evening.

Replacing air conditioners is probably not one of the activities you notice while at the club, but last month we did replace the Grille Room air condi-tioner as the old one finally blew its last breath of cold air.

We will also soon start repairs to the south wall of the building that backs up to the kitchen. A new inte-rior wall will be built and then the repair work will be completed from the outside of the building. During the construction of the new interior wall, some lunches may be cooked and served from the grill outside. We will communicate any of these inconveniences ahead of time. The club will remain open and our plan is to keep the kitchen open for dinner while we perform this corrective work.

It is great to see so many members enjoying the club during the week and weekends.

Enjoy! I will see you around the club.

At the August Board meeting the Board of Direc-tors approved Commodore Cardosi’s recommendation of the following members for the 2016 Nominating Committee: PC Rowland Milam, PC Robert de Vos, PC Tish Wold, Rick Burkel and JoAnn Jacobson. The function of the commit-tee is to identify members who are both willing and capable of serving in the club leadership. Some members make their interest known to the nominating committee; some are recom-mended by other members, and some are known by members of the committee by their involvement in the club.

We are looking for leaders who understand how the club works and are somewhat familiar with the club activities and interest groups. Usually these people have spent time serving on one or more standing committees. Potential leaders need to be aware of the level of involvement required to be successful as a director or officer of the club. There is some expectation they will attend most club functions. We need leaders who feel comfortable serving on behalf of our members.

The Nominating Committee members review potential lead-ers and make recommendations for the various positions avail-able. The recommendations must be posted 40 days prior to the Annual Meeting November 12. In addition, any voting member who qualifies may be nominated, upon written petition of 40 voting members, at least 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting and placed on the ballot as a candidate. The Date of Record to be eligible to vote at the Annual meeting is September 30, 2016.

Our club always needs the talents of our membership to con-tinue to grow and prosper in the future.

On Saturday the 6th there was a Tropical Evening Dock and Dance Party hosted by Andrew Tipton and Susan Camera, and what a party it was! The annual White Party was on Saturday August 20th.
