SVAS had a great September program and turnout. We had a packed program. A lot of people got to play with the Band and the Individual Players. We appreciate everyone’s support of the club. We are always looking for musicians to come forth to play for us. Please volunteer by calling Pam Kawashima and getting on the schedule. Your Board of Directors is working hard to keep top drawer entertainers coming in to play for you. I hope you agree that we have been doing a good job here. We are now scheduling for 2017. If you know of any new groups or individuals you would like to see at the meeting please let your Board know. The next festival we are all working toward is the downtown Campbell Oktoberfest again. We will be there wearing our accordions and looking for people to polka for us. If you don’t polka then a chicken dance or two will do. This is a festival we all enjoy playing in. Coming in March of 2017 is the National Accordion Convention in Richardson Texas. I am looking forward to visiting it. If anyone is interested let me know and I will keep you appraised of their schedules and get you an application. The October meeting will be short of help. If anyone would like to help out, call a Board member to volunteer. We need help setting up chairs, manning the front desk, etc. - Ken C

To begin our very enjoyable performance time, William DeMichelis played great music, just out of his memory, and he never hesitated after each melody. He just “flipped” to the next melody, so his playing was al-most like a medley. And Roland played his alto saxophone and added even more rhythm and tone to the pieces.

Next, Eric Scheel played the Just Because Polka, Let Me Call You Sweet-heart, La Mattinata, It Had To Be You, April In Portugal and Blue Moon. Eric’s neighbor played the flute and did a wonderful job.

The Happy Days Band

playing “Reefside Tunes”

L-R Ken Caple, Hubert Kallabis, Bill Tapogna

Marcia Coullahan, Gloria Tapogina MaryBarbara Zorio and William De Michellis

Ken Caple’s Happy Days Band includes Hubert Kallabis, Bill Tapogna, Marcia Coullahan, Gloria Tapogna, Marybarbara Zorio, William DeMichelis and the leader, Ken. And sure enough, Happy Days Are Here Again! Aloha, Blue Moon and Far Away Places. With the next two pieces, Ken played his vibraphone. That instru-ment adds a lovely “trill” sound to the melodies. They played Moonlight Bay, By the light of the Silvery Moon and Tiny Bubbles. Some of us sang to those.

Next, Don Pandori and Pam Kawashima played Anniversary Waltz, Return to Sor-rento and Oh Marie. It was a pleasure to hear them coordinate so well. Then, Paul Cain stood up and played very happy music at first. And as he was playing, cute little girl, Pele, came and gave him a hug! The rest of Paul’s music sounded very classical and brought back memories.

Our professional player this month , Reno DiBono, is also actually an accordion teacher, and he introduced us to two of his stutdents. One student, Art Lang, got up and played a few pieces for us. It would be good to hear him again sometime. The next student, George Lai, played with a very smooth sound. We were thrilled to have Reno bring them to us and have them play for us.

Our Master of Ceremonies, Bill Tapogna, announced that it was Betty Lou’s birthday, so the audience sang Happy Birthday to her. Then he mentioned that it was “9-11”, so the audience spoke the Pledge of Allegiance to the Ameri-can flag that was placed at the front of the room. Next, President, Ken Caple played his Concerto accordion and it can make a drum sound, a horn sound, and almost sound like a full band! Wow!

The last announcement was that it was Grandparents Day.

During Raffle time, Sherley and Anita donated tapes to the raffle. Thank you two! Dan won a CD and pens. Norma, William, and Pam each won the wine. Kathleen won the statues. Roland won the wine and Ken the Choco-lates.

Bob , Norma, and Pele (Paul Cains Daughter) orchestrated the Raffle.

A good time was had by all.

The Reno DiBono Trio

Our featured players, Reno DiBono on the accordion, Dave Kawamoto with the saxophone and clarinet and Olaf Sciapaccasse with the drums took us to Italy with Reginala Campagnola. I love rhythm, so I really enjoyed the emphasis that Olaf added to the music with the drum. When they played Dark Town Strutter’s Ball, Volare, Angelina and Rock Around the Clock, Reno sang them all, and that got us to sing them. For a couple of melodies, Roland played his alto saxo-phone in coordination with Dave playing his horn. They played Tea for Two, Once In a While, Honeysuckle Rose, Begin the Beguine, Just a Closer Walk With Thee and their finale was Don’t Get Around Much Anymore. What a pleasure!

Popular Song History The Clarinet Polka “The Clarinet Polka” or “A Hupfata” Grandpa Polka in Poland, Estonia and other Eastern European Countries. This music was composed in Austria by composer A. Hupfat. Other sources claim that “The Clarinet Polka” was written under the name “Dziadunio Polka” by Polish composer Karol Namyslowski. The piece performed as a polka, has a simple and catchy melody, featuring a prominent extended eight-note arpeggio. It is typically performed in B-flat major. Ref: Wiki KC
