From the PresidentWorkforce Attraction & Retention

“Help Wanted” signs are hanging conspicuously all over our community. We hear about the need for qualified workers—especially those who can pass pre-employment drug tests and background checks—in the coffee shops and at the board table. We know we have a mismatch between the skills of our workforce and the skills needed for many of our jobs…so how do we attract and retain the workforce talent we need to rev up our local economy?

We decided to turn to a community that has a history of measureable progress in this area for a little advice. Year after year, decade after decade, Sioux Falls has demonstrated job growth and population growth. We’ve invited Evan Nolte, the President & CEO of the Sioux Falls Chamber, to come to Mason City and share the Sioux Falls success story with North Iowa business and community leaders.

His remarks will focus on specific strategies they employ in a disciplined fashion to ensure they ”home grow” and attract workers with the skills needed by local businesses and industry. He’ll share their planning processes, resource alignment strategies, and public/private partnerships.

We’re looking forward to what we can learn from Evan as a first step toward a new day in our region…and we’re ready to follow this session up by assisting with the development of a comprehensive community plan, and most importantly, the IMPLEMENTATION of that plan.

Membership Director

Colleen Frein accepted the position of Membership Director effective August 1. She joined the Chamber’s staff last August as Program Director and will continue to staff the Chamber Ambassadors.

Colleen is a graduate of St. Cloud State University. Chamber members often recognize her as KIMT’s former morning co-anchor, Colleen O’Shaughnessy. She has vast experience as an award-winning multi-media journalist and public relations specialist.

In addition to membership recruitment and retention, Colleen will be offering two new services for our members. The Chamber now offers video production for social media and promotional purposes, and Colleen will use her expertise to develop, shoot, and edit these video messages ranging in length from 30 seconds to three minutes.

Colleen will also serve in the newly-created role of Community Concierge. The Chamber Board set a goal to create and fund this new position in response to requests from employers. Colleen will be available to assist member employees and their spouses with accessing services and getting connected in the North Iowa region. This is a strategy intended to accommodate workforce attraction and retention.

Colleen is a native of Rochester, but she has adopted Mason City as her hometown. She and her husband, Lucas, are the parents of a two-year old son, Johnathan.

Service & Operations Director

Linda Johanns joined the Chamber team on July 25 as Service & Operations Director. She replaces Mikki Baker who resigned to accept a new opportunity with North Iowa Collision Center. In this role, Linda will have responsibility for membership service and administration; budget and finance; operations; building & grounds; and assisting the North Iowa Builder’s Exchange. For the past five years, Linda has been employed as a loan processor at CENT Credit Union. She holds a degree from North Iowa Area Community College as well as several professional certifications.

Linda is a Mason City native, and she and her husband Gabe are the parents of two children, McKinzie and Logan. She enjoys spending time at the lake and at her children’s activities.

Program Director

Kativa Eckholt joined the Chamber full-time on August 15 in the role of Program Director. She will serve as staff liaison to the following standing committees: Agribusiness, Business Resource, Events, and Worksite Wellness. Kativa will also serve as coordinator for the annual North Iowa Band Festival, the Chamber’s signature community event.

Kativa is a recent honors graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in Event Management. In 2014, she served as a college intern at the Chamber, overseeing digital content and working on the Band Festival.

Kativa and fiancé, Zach, are both natives of Mason City and are expecting their first child in late October.

At the turn of the century, area business leaders loosely banded together to form the Mason City Commercial Club. That club evolved into the Mason City Chamber of Commerce in 1916. Three of the original members of the Mason City Commercial Club are still operating in Mason City: Coca-Cola Bottling Company, United Sugars, and Wells Fargo Bank. These businesses are proud sponsors of the Chamber’s 100th Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 6th.

United SugarsIn 1908, United Sugars Corporation also became part of the Mason City Commercial Club. At the time, the beet sugar plant was known as Northern Sugar Corporation. As you can see, the initial methods of delivering sugar beets were a little more cumbersome.

Coca-ColaCoca-Cola Bottling Company joined the Mason City Commercial Club in 1908. The business was originally located on Federal Avenue, before moving to its current home in southwest Mason City. This picture shows the old bottling line in the early 1900s.

Wells FargoWells Fargo Bank of Iowa joined the Mason City Commercial Club in 1912 as First National Bank. Here you see the inside of the building on North Federal in 1933,

one year before John Dillinger and his gang robbed the bank, making national headlines. On the back of the picture, bookkeeper Howard Stewart describes his role in figuring out how much cash was stolen.

COMING SOON: New VMC website

One of the primary tools Visit Mason City uses to reach all of our target audiences - Leisure Travelers, Meetings & Conventions, Sport Events and Group tours - is our website—www.VisitMasonCityIowa.com. Nearly 4,000 unique users access the site each month!

We are currently in the process of constructing a new website and look forward to unveiling the updated design in early fall.

The new site will provide visitors with comprehensive information and resources in a user-friendly format designed to automatically adjust to the size of the device the site is being viewed on. This is becoming increasingly important as our Google analytics indicate the number of visitors viewing our website from a mobile device is growing.

The new site will also provide our local partners - retailers, restaurants, attractions, and hoteliers - with improved listings featuring more photos, hyperlink phone numbers, map locators and more.

The site will also feature a new "LIVE HERE" page that will contain information, downloadable resources, and helpful links relevant to those who are looking to relocate to Mason City.

More information about the new Visit Mason City website will be coming soon. To learn more about enhanced listing opportunities for restaurants and retailers, contact Tessa Bratrud at [email protected] or 641.422.1663.

September 2016The 30th annual Iowa Downtown Conference, hosted by Main Street Mason City, was held August 2-4 in Mason City. The event is the premier statewide

annual conference for professionals and volunteers involved in downtown revitalization, and was centered in and around Music Man Square.

The conference included two days of classes, as well as a bonus day of “basic training” sessions in downtown development. Attendees were also

treated to their choice of nine different tours, exploring Mason City's architectural masterpieces and Hollywood history, and field sessions using Mason City as a living laboratory to demonstrate the successful use of the

Main Street Approach in the downtown district. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the event a success!

Severe weather forced cancellation of Friday Night Live in August; the good news, though, is that there's another one this year, in conjunction with the Great River City Festival, scheduled for September 16-17 in downtown

Mason City! In addition to John Dillinger's mobsters robbing the First National Bank several times on Saturday, there will be great music on

Friday, as well as the Ethnic Lunch, by the North Iowa Diversity Appreciation Team. Enjoy Mexican, Filipino, German, Greek, Italian,

Norwegian, English and Indian fare, Take-home treats will also be offered. It will be a great fall weekend in downtown Mason City!

Are you or anyone on your staff interested in volunteering or serving on the Main Street City Board? If so, contact Main Street Mason City at

CORRIDOR LOAN FUNDS AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS

T HE NORTH IOWA CORRIDOR has two revolving loan funds available to businesses in Cerro

Gordo County.

The Small Business Revolving Loan Fund is available to new and existing businesses to provide gap financing to small and emerging businesses in the area with an eye toward job creation and the leveraging of capital investment. This loan is available to all business sectors, including those in the retail, entertainment, and hospitality industries

To qualify for loan funding, applicant businesses must have a presence in Cerro Gordo County, employ fewer than 50 employees, produce less than $1 million in gross annual sales and meet additional established criteria. The loan fund will not compete with traditional business financing sources and loans are limited to $10,000 per applicant business.

Chad Schreck, President & CEO of the North Iowa Corridor, said, “The Corridor hopes that these funds will spur growth in small business start-ups, as well as provide existing small businesses with the assistance they may need to grow.”

The second funding resource is the Corridor Revolving Loan Fund. The loan fund is administered by an independent board of trustees and serves as a gap financing resource for growing primary sector businesses. It is not intended to

vitatem exerum dolorem porporem

explici endant nimilit

compete with other available sources of funding, but rather to provide money necessary to leverage those resources.

Schreck said the fund has been used to leverage existing industry growth as well as to assist in the attraction of new business to North Iowa, including Sunny Fresh Foods, Inc., now Cargill Kitchen Solutions, which today employs close to 200 people in Mason City.

He added that without the generous contributions of the original seeders of the fund and sound management, this resource would not be possible.

“The contributors to this fund made an investment in the betterment of North Iowa, and the excellent management of a series of highly capable trustee boards have positioned the Corridor RLF to be one of the strongest in the state,” Schreck said.

For more information on either loan fund, please contact Schreck at [email protected] or 641-423-0315.

“NIACC does not discriminate in employment or education. See http://www.niacc.edu/about/non-discrimination-statement/ for additional information.”

This fall marks the 20th Anniversary of the creation of the five John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers. In September 1996, John Pappajohn and then-Governor Terry Branstad traveled to the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, North Iowa Area Community College, Drake University and University of Northern Iowa. One by one, each institution was awarded funds to use in the development of an entrepreneurial center that would provide the education, resources and coaching to support aspiring entrepreneurs. There were no strings attached, just the generous opportunity to make Iowa the most entrepreneurial state in the country.

John and Mary Pappajohn made an initial investment of $5 million dollars. Today their investment in the five Pappajohn Centers exceeds $25 million. The Pappajohn Centers collectively have had a tremendous impact in the Great State of Iowa and

Blue Zones Project ®

An initiative of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce has been named a winner for a national award presented by the Association of Chamber of Commerce executives (ACCe).

Through its partnership with Mason City’s Blue zones Project ®, the Chamber’s Worksite Wellness Committee has been recognized for maintaining a focus on well-being in local worksites.

The ACCe Regional Innovation Award recognizes organizations committed to building strong and vibrant communities through groundbreaking collaboration and program development. Award winners are community pioneers that focus on four principles of regional stewardship: an innovative economy, livable communities, social inclusion, and a collaborative style of governance.

The award was presented during ACCe’s convention in Savannah on August 10. A panel of judges comprised of previous award winners and ACCe board members selected the winners out of four finalists of exemplary regional programs.
