September 2016 Dear Parent/Carer, Welcome to the first edition of ‘Community News’ for the new school year 2016-17. This Septem- ber edition enables us to bring everyone up to date with events that took place right at the end of the summer term and over the holidays, as well as with what has been happening over the last couple of weeks. We have been very pleased to welcome new students and new staff to our school community. 243 students have joined Year 7, with many more currently on appeals and waiting lists. In addi- tion, we have admitted new students into Years 8, 9 and 10 from other schools and we very much hope that they, along with all of our new Year 7s, will soon feel settled and happy at saltash.net community school. Our Sixth Form numbers are also strong again this year and we say a particular welcome to the new Year 12 students who have selected our school as their first choice for post 16 learning; many are returning from last year’s Year 11 cohort, but several have also joined us from other schools. The overall aim for every student here at saltash.net is to achieve highly academically and make excellent progress, whatever the starting point, whilst at the same time broadening their learning experiences and enjoying their education at our school. New staff joining us this September are: Teaching staff English: Mr Tom Ward (Key Stage 3 coordinator) Mr Lewis Barnes Mr Phil Birch Science: Miss Jen Harris (Head of Chemistry) Ms Sam Rogers Mr Chris Wills Drama: Mrs Emily Smart Music: Mr Ryan Procter (maternity cover for Mrs Silvester) ICT & Psychology: Mrs Angie Fuller Support Staff Teaching Assistants: Mrs Tracy Hollister Mrs Wendy Phillips Miss Alice Pollard Mrs Helen Lawther Miss Sharna Ward Cover Supervisor: Mrs Sarah Watts ICT Technician: Mr Shaun Egan

Press Release: Advanced Level Results at saltash.net community school!

There was much to celebrate at saltash.net community school when students arrived on the morning of Thursday August 18th to collect their long awaited A Level and AS Level results. The months of hard work and effort had definitely paid off with almost 50% of all grades achieved at A Level being A*, A and B. With a cohort of 98 students, making it one of the largest A Level groups across schools in Cornwall, these results demonstrate the ongoing success of post 16 provision at saltash.net. Very pleasingly, alongside the very high proportion of top grades, the average points score per student also increased in 2016, reflecting excellent progress across the entire ability range. There were many outstanding individual performances, including those of the school’s Head Student team for 2015 – 16. Between them, Georgina Curtis, Paul Gerry, Ellen Hambly and Hannah Paull clocked up a remarkable 4 A*s, 4 As and 5Bs, whilst at the same time having made an exemplary contribution to the school and local community throughout their time at saltash.net. Also deserving of special individual praise was Ellie Spencer who faced extreme adversity throughout the duration of her A Levels, which included her ongoing battle with the can-cer she was diagnosed with during her GCSEs. Despite everything, Ellie still managed to secure an A* grade in Psychology, an A grade in Sociology, B grades in Maths and Biology and an A* for her Extended Project Qualification. The following fifteen students all achieved at least two A* or A grades overall: Lauren Armstrong: A* (Business Studies), A (Geography), B (Maths), A* (Extended Project) Gemma Bennett: A* (Sociology), Distinction (Applied Science), B (Geography) Sam Cooke: A (Art and Design), A (Design and Technology), C (Geography) Georgina Curtis: A* (Maths), A (English Language), A (Media) James Duff: A* (P.E.), A (French). A (Maths), B (History) Paul Gerry: A* (Maths), A (Further Maths), B (Computer Science), C (Physics) Nathan Gilchrist: A* (Sociology), A (Business Studies) Distinction (Applied Science) Andrew Grech: A* (Fine Art), A (Design and Technology), C (History) Mark Hall: A* (Sociology), A (German), B (Biology) Ellen Hambly: A* (Psychology), A (French), B (History) Jessica Jones: A (Theatre Studies), A (English Language), B (Media) Tim Pook: A (Physics), A (Maths), B (Chemistry), B (German) Matthew Seymour: A (Chemistry), A (Physics), A (Maths) Ellie Spencer: A* (Psychology), A (Sociology), B (Biology), B (Maths), A* (Extended Project) Molly Stubbs: A* (Art and Design), A (English Language), A (History)

Press Release: Advanced Level Results contd ...

These superb results now mean that the majority of students are able to progress to their first choice universities or appren-ticeships, which include the prestigious Glasgow School of Art for Molly Stubbs, a place at London University (Royal Holloway) to study Film, Television and Media Production for Georgina Curtis, Exeter University’s Mathematics with International Study for Matt Seymour and Law with French at Bristol University for Ellen Hambly. For Gabriel Crocombe, who secured three B grades in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, a place to study Maths with Education awaits at the highly regarded Texas A & M University in the United States of America. For Year 12 students collecting their results, there was also a great deal to celebrate with more outstanding achievements, including those of Ed Gilford who, alongside attaining A grades in Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry and an A* in the Ex-tended Project, also managed to gain an A* in A Level Maths a year early, with a terrific final result of 594 marks out of 600 across all of his papers. Head of Sixth Form, Adam Killeya, praised all of the outcomes, saying, ‘We are really proud of what the students have achieved with the strong support of their teachers, family and friends: their hard work really has paid off.’ Inevitably, for staff and students at saltash.net, this year’s A Level Results were tinged with sadness and poignancy following the tragic death of year 13 student, Charlie Pitcher, back in July. Speaking on results’ day, Headteacher, Isobel Bryce, said, ‘The whole school community continues to be greatly saddened by Charlie’s untimely death. I am certain, however, that his family will be feeling an element of pride to-day knowing that Charlie was among the school’s top perform-ers, gaining, alongside other very good results, an A grade in Maths, the subject he was most passionate about.’

In tribute to Charlie, a group of year 13 students who are

part of a band called Helvellyn played a concert in his

memory at a local pub on results’ day night.

Press Release: GCSE Results’ Day 2016

saltash.net community school would like to congratulate all students in Year 11 on achieving a very pleasing set of results today against a backdrop of significant GCSE change and reform. A fantastic 92 students out of the 231 strong cohort secured at least one A* or A grade, with a fifth of them achieving at least 3A* or A grades. Students and staff rose to the challenge of a revised curriculum and many syllabus changes, with the year group as a whole performing well on the new Progress 8 Measure. As the new measure is a national comparator, the final outcome will not be known until all of the results have been verified in the Autumn Term, but initial indications show, pleasingly, that saltash.net students across the ability range are making better than the expected progress based on their prior attain-ment. There were many superb individual performances, including the following twelve students who all achieved at least 9 A* and A grades: Charlotte Berry: 5 A* and 4 A grades Niamh Cameron: 5 A* and 5 A grades Tori Carter: 6 A* and 5 A grades George Duff: 4 A* and 5 A grades Matthew Higgins: 4 A* and 5 A grades Rowenna Hoskin: 1 A* and 9 A grades Lucy Kevern: 3 A* and 7 A grades James Lancaster: 6 A* and 3 A grades Harry Lockley: 7 A* and 2 A grades Kari Summers: 2 A* and 8 A grades Josh Tennant: 4 A* and 7 A grades Eleanor Williams: 9 A grades Another Charlotte deserving of an extra special mention from this Year 11 cohort is Charlotte Barriball, who in the summer term of her Year 10 GCSE course was diagnosed with Pre B Lym-phoblastic Lymphoma, a type of cancer treated as Leukaemia. Charlotte was placed on a two year treatment plan which included major back operations to remove her tumour and regular courses of chemotherapy and blood transfusions. With ongoing support from her family, Bristol Children’s Hospital, and saltash.net, Charlotte achieved the remarkable feat of still gaining 6 A* - C grades in her GCSEs. A hugely talented sportswoman, Charlotte’s GCSE in PE was particularly special to her. The PE department at salt-ash.net paid tribute to her efforts, saying, ‘Charlotte is a true warrior. She is one of the most inspiring students we have known, completing the entire year 11 course in just six weeks, most of it over the Easter holidays when she attended revision and catch up sessions every single day. She is so deserving of every accolade going her way!’

Charlotte Berry also deserves an extra special commendation as one of the school’s top performing students as she managed to achieve 100% attendance across years 7 to 11 whilst at saltash.net, demonstrating a fantastic commitment to her learning and education!

Press Release: GCSE Results’ Day 2016

In an extremely inclusive school, saltash.net is also very proud of the results of those students for whom learning itself has been a major challenge. Alongside students who joined the school at the start of Year 11 having previously encountered major disruption to their education, students from the school’s Trematon Zone also performed exception-ally well, with Beth Hackworthy securing a GCSE in Art as well as Entry Level Qualifica-tions in English, Maths and ICT. Speaking on results’ day, Headteacher, Mrs Bryce, applauded the efforts of students and

staff during a ‘turbulent’ time in education: ‘Everyone has worked very hard over the past

two years to get the best results possible. The Class of 2016 has made us very proud,

not just because of their academic success, but because of how they have developed as

capable and caring young people. We all wish them every success in the future and look

forward to welcoming a large number back into our 6th Form at the start of the Autumn

Term.’

Summer School - August 2016

Once again saltash.net hosted Summer School to students making the transition from primary school into Year 7. The two day programme was jam packed with a variety of activities to help our young people get to know the school, teachers and one another. The participants were wel-comed by teams of mentors from the previous Year 7 cohort as well as students from our Sixth Form, all of whom took leading roles in supporting and integrating the new arrivals. With exciting activities like climbing on the school’s recently updated climbing wall with instruc-tors from Do – Cornwall, as well as laser tag from Laser Battlefields, there was never a dull mo-ment. There was also the opportunity for participants to experience the exciting learning envi-ronment generated here at saltash.net as they completed literacy based activities including a rather sticky and gooey alien autopsy! There were plenty of opportunities for students to get to know their peers with team building activities provided by the Summer School Co-ordinator, Mr Roger Reynolds. At the end of the week students wrote postcards to Head Teacher, Mrs Bryce, telling her all

about their week. One of the comments included, ‘I loved summer school because it was chal-

lenging and fun. I now feel even more confident about coming to this school.’

Students help the heroes! saltash.net student Elliot Wearne-Gould recently carried

out work experience at the Help for Heroes military charity’s

Plymouth Recovery Centre. The centre supports wounded,

injured and sick veterans and serving personnel and their

families. Elliot leant a hand, assisting in the centre’s gym

and hydrotherapy pool and working in the garden. He also

sampled some of the activities provided.

Elliot, currently in Year 13 and who wants to be a pilot, said,

‘Hearing the veterans’ stories really touched my heart. My

experience has really motivated me so much more to go out

and volunteer.’

German Lifestyle – Daniel Frankland This was my 3rd trip to Germany organised by the school and each time it gets better and bet-ter. Having the opportunity to go abroad and teach is such an amazing experience and of course looks fantastic on a CV. Inevitably, Mr Rowe made things difficult when he told Zac and me, that to get to Germany we’d have to take 2 coaches, a plane and 2 trains but it definitely made the trip a lot more fun! I’d like to thank him greatly for organising it all! It’s interesting to experience a German lifestyle and living there for 2 weeks really gave me a true insight. One thing I won’t miss is getting up at 6:30am to go to school! Thankfully, it was only a short walk but with school starting at 7:45am it was still a pain. During my time at the pri-mary school I was with a Grade 2 class (Year 3). My day would consist of being a general teaching assistant in their lessons such as German, maths and science. As they were too young to start learning English, every now and then, I’d go to a Grade 4 class (Year 5) and teach them English. The primary school day finished at 12:30pm but most days I was in till 2pm to volunteer myself to help in after school clubs such as the homework club. Overall my trip was hugely successful; I’ve gained valuable experience and my German has taken another step forward. I encourage every student to take a language at GCSE or A-Level. Being able to speak another language is not only an important life skill but it can also open many more doors for future careers. Dan, Year 13

Derriford Hospital - Scott Williams Further to the excellent assemblies given by Year 9 stu-

dent, Scott Williams, last year on the theme of ‘Being a

Haemophiliac’, a cheque presentation for £312.18 took

place at Derriford Hospital at the start of the Summer

Holidays. Scott helped to organise some fundraising ac-

tivities at saltash.net so that a donation could be made

to support the work of the Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Mrs Bryce was very pleased to join Scott and his mum at

Derriford to help hand over the cheque to Scott’s Haematology consultant from BCH.

The consultant was extremely grateful for the donation and asked that thanks be passed

on to all students and staff who helped to support the fundraising.

Livewire honoured by royal guest

Mr Bond, Ms Littledyke and Mrs Bryce were all de-

lighted to accept an invitation at the start of the

term to attend Livewire Youth Centre’s 70th Anni-

versary celebrations. Held on Thursday 8th Sep-

tember at the waterfront location in Saltash, the

event showcased a range of its outstanding out-

reach work in the presence of HRH the Duchess of

Gloucester.

saltash.net was particularly proud that two of its

ex students, Mitchell Slim Fitzpatrick and Nicole

Higgins, had been selected by Livewire Director,

Andy Rance, to speak and perform in front of the Duchess of Gloucester. The school was

also delighted to hear that both Mitch and Nicole were about to commence music related

degrees at Plymouth University this September.

Jurassic Coast Fieldtrip - by Siobhan Ellyat, Year 12

On Wednesday 21st September, we were involved in a field trip to the Jurassic Coast in Dorset as part of our A level Geography course. There were 11 stu-dents with 2 teachers, and there definitely were a lot of jokes flying around! We were all at school on the minibus at 7:30am (with the exception of Kieran who had an extra 10 minutes in bed and complained about how early it was). Within 20 minutes of setting off, half of us were either asleep or eating! When we finally got to our first destination, Chesil

Beach Abbotsbury, we were stunned by what we

saw. The beach is a 20 mile bank of sediment ,

moulded by Longshore drift processes but formed

as a result of sea level rises after the last ice age.

After 30 minutes there, we jumped back onto the

minibus and set off for our next destination – Port-

land.

Arriving at Portland, we ventured up to the top of the beach to survey our surroundings. Both Mr Clark and Mr Stokes gave us a talk about how our sur-roundings had changed from the previous area of beach. We were left to investigate the characteris-tics for ourselves and met up further down the beach at the sea wall. From there, we had a conver-sation about sea defences and the effectiveness of each one. We hopped back on the bus for a 40 minute trip and

arrived at West Lulworth. By then the sun had com-

pletely come out and we began the walk to Durdle

Door. Although I've been there before, the sight of

seeing that landform will never fail to leave me in

awe. Mr Clark gave us a few talks about the land-

scape as we walked down onto the beach for a

break. Some of the boys decided to play chase with

the waves and got wet! Wet jeans for Jay all the way

home!!

For our final destination, we walked back down to West Lulworth and scrambled over a few rocks to go to Stair Hole. Although Mr Clark wouldn’t let us climb on the rocks, we could see how the coastal processes managed to erode this area. It was actual-ly really interesting to examine how the sea had done it. Finally, we headed back to the minibus via Lulworth

Cove. That was amazing! It was just incredible to

see how the sea had managed to break through the

soft rock and create this landform. We also learnt

about an alternate explanation for the formation

which was a river coming through the valley and

adding to the erosion that the sea was already do-

ing.

Sadly, our time ran out and we had to go home. The trip had been a total success. Everyone enjoyed it much more than we thought we would, even some of Mr Clark's jokes had managed to make us laugh. That's special!

Roald Dahl 100 day ... saltash.net joined people around the world in celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl this month. Organised by Library Manager, Mr Coot, the day was part of #RoaldDahl100, marking 100 years since the birth of the children’s novelist. Students were invited to play a number of Dahl-themed puzzles, games and activities in the library at lunchtime, whilst Mr. Coot dressed as one of Dahl’s most famous characters, Willy Wonka, for the day. Screenings of Roald Dahl films also took place each day, with students who reserved their seats being presented with a Golden Ticket to commemorate the occasion. Mr Coot hailed the enthusiasm the children had for the celebrations. It was a true mix of year groups with some nervous and shy Year 7s popping in to see what it was all about (and enjoying the many puz-zles, games and chocolate!) and students all the way up to Year 13 wanting to take part in the games.

A Level Biology students at saltash.net recently visited the unique Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre at Plymouth

University.

The main aim of the trip, which took place on Friday 16th September, was to aid understanding of how the electron

microscopes work and their uses within scientific research and medicine, which is a fundamental part of the A Level

biology course.

The 17 students in attendance were given a talk on the range of specimen preparation techniques used, and got to see

the process of ‘freeze-drying’ using liquid nitrogen – which was a highlight of the trip! Students were shown both the

TEM and SEM microscopes with a couple of students taking the chance to operate the SEM system. A tour of the

university campus, which was very busy with the start of Freshers week, also gave students a taste of university life.

Head of Biology, Miss Newberry, was delighted with how the visit went. She said: “The day was a great success,

providing students with the opportunity to see just how diverse a career in microscopy can be, and for some, it in-

spired and reinforced their aspirations to go onto university and pursue a degree in this area.”

A taste of university life ...

School Teams Show Jumping and Cross Country Competition -

October 16th 2016 - Chyverton Equestrian

Do you ride? If so, we would love for you to enter the above competition as part of a school team. The event is quite challenging as it involves show jump-ing and then cross country riding over a course of ditches, walls and water. For further information, please contact Mrs J Hollyman, Headteacher’s PA via Reception or email [email protected].

National Lottery Award … We are delighted to share that we have been successful in our bid for £10,000 from the National Lottery’s Award for All scheme. These monies mean we can continue working on successful programmes within Key Stage 3 to improve and support the development of our students. By working alongside Flint and Steel, Mount Edgcumbe and Do Cornwall, we will provide exciting and engaging opportunities for selected students to en-gage in a programme of skills development. Last year’s Pathways Scheme was a great success, and we are pleased the National Lottery has recognised this work.

Thank you Endsleigh ...

Students at saltash.net have officially opened their revamped garden space, kindly donated and worked on free of charge by Endsleigh Garden Centre. The garden is part of the school’s Area Resource Base, known as The Zone, which is used by students with severe learning difficulties. Matt Pollard from Endsleigh Garden Centre led a team of volunteers working at the school, after receiving letters from students requesting donations to help replace damaged items, in-cluding a parasol, as well as to help rebuild the damaged pond. The Zone’s rabbits have also been given a new home, with an outdoor hutch and run having been provided. Endsleigh’s team of volunteers came in over the holidays, spending four days in foul and fair weather in order to complete the heavy grafting, whilst students also volunteered their time to complete the job. The school also received help from Trago Mills, B & M and Tesco, who pro-vided vouchers and garden furniture towards the redevelopment. The opening of the garden was attended by Saltash Mayor Hilary Frank who spoke to students about the changes that had been made and was given a tour of The Zone. Lead teacher at The Zone, Mrs Gomer said, ‘Thank you immensely to all companies who made donations and gave their time. It has made a huge difference to the learning environment in the Zone.’ Mrs Bryce praised Endsleigh’s efforts, 'The school would like to say a very big thank you to the

staff from Endsleigh Garden Centre for their incredible generosity and kindness towards the

young people in our Trematon Zone. The garden is now a very special place and will be used

extensively to enhance learning and enrichment opportunities for the Zone children.'
