Holosy - a non-denominational adult, mixed voice, choir welcomes new members.
Rehearsals are held Monday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Repertoire focuses main-
ly on traditional Ukrainian folk music, with periodic performances at senior's residenc-
es, care homes, and at other events such as the Festival of Trees. The choir strives to
preserve the rich tradition of Ukrainian choral music and to share that legacy with the

Dear Sunday School Parents and children,
Summer vacation is coming to a close, and we will soon be
starting up our Sunday School program. This first day of our
classes will commence on Sunday, September 11, 2016. At this
time Fr. Taras will bless all the Children's backpacks for the up
coming year.
Dear Parents, as in the past we are always encouraging all of our children to
attend. However, we would like you to help our Sunday school coordinators
and teachers. If your children are under the age of 6 years, it is important
that you stay to assist your child with various projects during classes. We are
also praying that perhaps two or three parents would like to help Dobr.
Joanne with the teaching. The role of the Church, the duty of the parent is to
give an opportunity for our children to receive religious instruction early, in
the formative years. Then as they grow, they shall become firm in their
Orthodox faith. Any one who is interested in teaching Sunday School please

For you have truly been revealed as more honourable than the prophets since you were deemed worthy to baptize in the river the One of whom they foretold. There-fore, having fought and suffered for the Truth, you have also joyfully preached to those in hades the good tidings of God revealed in the flesh, Who takes away the sins of the world and grants us great mercy.
27 вересня - Воздвиження Чесного і Животворчого Хреста Господнього
Хрест існував уже в давніх народів, в єгиптян, фінікійців, асирійців ще до народження Ісуса Христа і кара смерті на хресті вже в ті часи існувала. Від тих народів хрест і кару смерті на хресті перейняли римляни, і коли вони в 63-ому році, перед народженням Христа, завоювали Палестину, то принесли з собою хрест і спосіб карати смертю на хресті різних злочинців-чужинців, але не римлян. У Палестині в той час злочинців карали каменуванням, але для Ісуса Христа єврейський парламент – Синедріон – обрав ганебний спосіб смерті, тобто не каменування, а розп'яття на хресті, щоб таким чином якнайбільше зневажити особу Ісуса Христа, зачисляючи Його до найбільших злочинців.
І тільки в 313 році Візантійський імператор Костянтин Великий, що своїм Міланським едиктом дав волю християнам вільно визнавати свою релігію, заборонив карати розп'яттям кого б то не було.
Діставши право визнавати віру в Христа Ісуса, християни поцікавились долею хреста, що на ньому був розп'ятий Ісус Христос. Треба було віднайти цього хреста, а тому св. Олена, мати імператора Костянтина, прибула в 326 році до Єрусалиму, і тут вдалось їй віднайти не лише хрест Ісуса Христа, а й хрести, що на них розп'яті були два розбійника. Щоб упевнитися, який з них є хрест Господній, Патріарх Макарій доручив прикладати померлого чоловіка до кожного хреста, і коли того приклали до третього хреста, він ожив. Це і був Господній Хрест.
Радості присутніх при цьому не було меж. Усі хотіли бачити і навіть доторкнутись до Господнього Хреста, а тому Патріарх Макарій наказав підносити-воздвигати Господній Хрест, щоб народ міг його бачити.
У пошану до Хреста Господнього Православна Церква встановила свято Воздвиження Чесного і Животворящого Хреста Господнього, що його велично святкуємо кожного року 14 вересня, а 27 вересня за новим стилем. Це одне з найдавніших християнських свят. Цього дня в соборних церквах відбувається спеціальний чин підношення-воздвиження Чесного Хреста, а народ, стаючи на коліна, співає: "Господи, помилуй".
As important as any of the feast days commemorating the exalted saints of the Church is the feast day held annually on September 14 in special tribute to the cross of Jesus Christ, the reproduction of which is worn or displayed in every corner of the earth as a symbol of the mightiest faith in all the universe.
The two timbers on which the Messiah died to save the world, priceless beyond meas-ure, form the most familiar and beloved symbol in a world full of symbols and emblems. For nearly three hundred years after his death the Cross was buried in obscurity, eventu-ally to be salvaged through the efforts of a devout Byzantine emperor and his mother.
The Emperor Constantine the Great was not only the first Christian emperor, but, togeth-er with his mother, has been honoured with sainthood. His mother is honoured for her determined efforts in the cause of Christianity. It was Constantine who beheld a vision in the sky in which were emblazoned the words 'en touto Nika', translating into "In this Sign Conquer," etched across a brilliant cross of Jesus Christ.
Ordering that all the shields of his army bear the sign of the Cross, Constantine went on to subdue the enemies of the state and to establish the Christian faith, which has outlived his empire and will endure forever. Helen, the mother of Constantine and a saint of the Church, had the full support of her son when she decided to recover the cross of Christ, and although nearly three hundred years had elapsed since the Crucifixion, she was opti-mistic in her resolve to find the Cross and return it to the city of Constantinople.
After months of diligent search, painstakingly following every historic clue as to its whereabouts, Helen and her dedicated group of searchers discovered the Cross on 14 September 325 AD in the vicinity of Golgotha, where it had been buried in the dust of the centuries. On the spot where the Cross was discovered there was found to grow a hitherto unknown flower of rare beauty and fragrance which has been named Vasiliko (Basil), meaning the flower of royalty, out of respect to the Dowager Queen who led the expedition.
This flower, since that memorable day over 1600 years ago, has been the official flower
of the Orthodox Christian Church and is in evidence when Clergymen engage in the age
-old tradition of blessing homes or the waters on which seamen ply their trade.

Feast of the Elevation of the Precious and Life-giving Cross

Harvest, Thanksgiving, and Sowing
By marking the start of a new year in September, the Empire—and later, the Orthodox Church—was associating the new year with harvesting crops. As preparations for winter were being made, so too were preparations for the upcoming year.
For Christians, it was a time of thanksgiving, remembering the good weather and abun-dant rain the Lord provided for that year’s harvest—something we pray for at every Divine Liturgy.
This draws close parallels with the Feast of Trumpets for the pre-Incarnation people of God (Lev. 23:23–25):
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘The seventh month, on the first of the month, rest will be yours, a memorial of trumpets; it will be a holy assembly to you. You will not perform any servile work, and you will bring a whole burnt offering to the Lord.’”
As the Synaxarion notes, this was also the day Christ entered a synagogue and read from the scroll of Isaiah (cf. Luke 4:16–30).
By marking the new year at harvest time, we remind ourselves annually of our depend-ence on both hard work and the blessings of God. Going beyond material blessings and healthy crops, this applied (as do many of our hymns) to Imperial concerns, including prayers for protection from our enemies:
Creator of the universe, setting times and seasons by Your sole authority, bless the cycle of the year of Your grace, O Lord, guarding our rulers and Your nation in peace, at the intercession of the Theotokos, and save us. —Apolytikion (Second Tone)
You who created all things in Your infinite wisdom, and set the times by Your own authority, grant Your Christian people victories. Blessing our comings and goings throughout this year, guide our works accord-ing to Your divine will. —Kontakion (Fourth Tone)
And if one considers the increasing natural disasters, droughts, floods, wildfires (especially here in the Pacific Northwest), hurricanes, and famines, we should be all the more mindful in this modern era of technology and abundance to pray for such things—not less so.
We have not engineered our way out of dependence on God. If anything, the more our abilities increase, the more we have shown need for God’s favor and mercy.

The Orthodox Christian
The Orthodox Christian belongs to the Body of Christ. This Eastern Orthodox Church is organically
the same congregation (or ecclesia) which was born at the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Jerusa-
lem on Pentecost, a direct continuation from the Apostles by laying on of hands from each gener-
ation of priests to the next. The Orthodox Christian recognizes the rich Christian heritage and pro-
claims that the belongs to this Church, which corresponds to the Church of the Apostles as does a
grown-up person correspond to a picture taken of him as a child.
The Orthodox Christian has been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity and follows the ideals
and beliefs of both the Scriptures and Sacred Tradition. He believes in a living and loving God,
Whose Grace protects and guides him in the path of redemption. He believes that God has
revealed Himself in the Bible through the Prophets and especially in the Person of Jesus Christ,
His only-begotten Son who is man’s Savior. He especially believes in the Incarnation of Christ as
God-Man, in His Crucifixion and Resurrection, in His Gospel and Commandments, and in the
world to come.

Spirituality in the Orthodox Church means the everyday activity of life in communion with
God. The term spirituality refers not merely to the activity of man’s spirit alone, his mind,
heart and soul, but it refers as well to the whole of man’s life as inspired and guided by the
Spirit of God. Every act of a Christian must be a spiritual act. Every thought must be spiritual,
every word, every deed, every activity of the body, every action of the person. This means that
all that a person thinks, says and does must be inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit so that
the will of God the Father might be accomplished as revealed and taught by Jesus Christ the
Son of God.

Doing all things to the glory of God id the meaning and substance of life for a human being.
This “doing” is what Christian spirituality is about.

Tithing—Membership -- Pledge
Tithing is a Christian ideal worth striving towards. It is important to learn that our own generosity
is a commitment in maintaining our own Church building and various programing that we wish to
present throughout the year. It would be great and humbling , not to rely on non Orthodox
Christians, or guests to support us. As the Cathedral Dean, I humbly ask, please help us to meet
our yearly budget, by giving joyfully your 2016 yearly membership and tithe as soon as possible.

Jesus’ disciples tell him that all they have are five loaves and two small fish that a boy has offered.
Jesus’ response is the phrase, “Bring them to me.” Jesus then takes the loaves, blesses and breaks them, and feeds 5,000 men plus women and children.
We offer ourselves and we become the Church, His body on earth. No matter how
much we give, He cannot be outdone. Just like the boy who offered the loaves and the fish, if we offer what we have –
however great or small our gift – with prayer and humility, God will receive our
gifts and multiply them to feed His people.
Orthodox Christian Stewardship is way of life, which acknowledges accounta-
bility, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Stewardship is
to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins
when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on
those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift
from Him. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a
portion of the gifts with which they have been blessed
