WELLNESS CORNER

LIMITED DOSES OF HIGH DOSE FLU VACCINE New this year, the Board of Health has received a limited supply of “high dose” flu vaccine. This type of flu vaccine is currently only recommended for individuals 65 years or older who have medical conditions that suppress immunity. The Federal Centers for Disease Control are still evaluating whether this type of flu vaccine is significantly more effective (i.e. produces an enhanced immune response) than other flu vaccines in preventing flu infections for immune-suppressed individuals. The safety profile of the “high dose “vaccine (e.g. possible reactions, such as temporary pain at the injection site) appears to be very similar to standard flu vaccines.

As the number of doses of “high dose” flu vaccine in inventory is limited, kindly call Carol Steiner, R.N., Community Health Nurse (565-4154) to reserve a dose of this vaccine. The “high dose” flu vaccine will be administered at separate clinics from the main supply of vaccine.

West Nile Disease Precautions

Longmeadow Boards of Health has received confirmation from state public health officials that mosquito samples collected in the Greater Springfield area have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Residents are urged to follow the following precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites from now through the first “hard” frost (approximately mid-October): Apply insect repellent to any exposed skin and permethrin to clothing when you are out of doors. Repellents containing DEET-compounds are considered the most effective. Avoid outdoor activities at the times of day when the mosquitos carrying these diseases are most active, especially in the early morning hours and beginning at dusk through the hours of darkness. If possible, wear long sleeves, socks, and long pants when out of doors. Remove any sources of water around the home such as empty containers and barrels. Clean out bird baths twice/week. Clear blocked gutters. Remove tires from outdoor area where they may trap rain water. Keep swimming pool circulation systems running continuously. Aging Support Group Wednesday, September 28, 12:15 PM

As we age, how can we continue to feel valued, joyful, and satisfied in the context of a larger culture that denies that life is finite?

Advances in health care and our own efforts to keep ourselves healthy may have added years to our lives, but do not automatically ensure that we will enjoy life to the end. There is no medical or community system set up to help us assess what matters to us most as we pass the age of 70 and draw closer to the end of our journeys. Our introductory meeting in July went so well, we are extending the discussion. Our plan is to meet on the last Wednesday each month, at 12:15 PM with the goal of sharing information and providing mutual support for seniors.

Food Pantry Wish List

This time of year donations to our food pantry slow down leaving our shelves pretty sparse! We are in need of all types of food and paper goods. Our pantry is now open two days per week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, for

those in need. Please spread the word about us!

We can especially use: Pasta Sauce, Cleaning Products, Cold Cereals, Baking Needs, Pancake mix & Syrup, Cookies,

Crackers, Jelly, Beverages, Condiments, Snacks, toilet paper, paper towels.

Thank you for your support!

Dear SNAP Recipients,

It has come to our attention that approximately 15,000 clients were mailed a notice from Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, advising them that they may be losing their utilities discount because they are no longer DTA clients. The vast majority of clients who received this notice are active and will continue to get the discounted rate.

Columbia Gas has added an announcement on their IVR system. An email was sent informing the 7379 customers for whom they have an email address on file, that the letter was sent in error. Additionally they will be mailing a hard copy letter to all 15,000 impacted clients and are in the process of updating a message for their website.

A notice will be displayed on DTA's home page notifying clients of the error. An automated call with go out to clients as well.

Seeking Meals on Wheels Drivers

Are you passionate about making a difference and helping those most in need? Are you friendly, kind and caring with a clean driving record? Do you have 2 hours that you can give at minimum once per month? (ideally we would like once per week, but we are flexible!)

We deliver on average 50-60 meals to homebound residents per day! As a meals on wheels driver, you would deliver to about 20-25 homebound a day. Imagine seeing 25 isolated seniors each day to deliver them a hot, home-made meal...it’s very rewarding to see the smiles and hear the thank yous! And there is a sign-on BONUS! We will provide you with a $25.00 BIG Y gas card for signing up to be a driver for us! Please contact Mike for more details!
