Some of our newer members have fallen in love with the club
As Summer turns to Fall and the weather provides us with better condit ions to fu lly en j o y H i lto n Hea d activity at the club increases.
Check the calendar for the boat trips which are planned in the com ing month, the Seafood Feast planned f o r t h e 2 9 t h o f September, the start of the Flying Scot Races and the Boats in the Water activities.
Around the club we continue to upgrade the facility. In the k i t c h e n w e h a v e installed new stoves, a dish washer and a new freezer. The planned painting of the building hit some snags with the planning staff at
the town regarding the color. Last report in dicated that the painting of the building would start shortly after the rain stops. The Town has approved the g ray a n d o u r painter continues to work with town staff on the white trim.
Some of the ideas p r e s e n t l y b e i n g pursued are a poker night, a wine tasting dinner in October and of course the highlight of the year - the C h a n g e o f Wat c h Dinner on November 14th.
I am looking forward to seeing many of you at these events.

Nauti Ladies Report
The Nauti Ladies entertained themselves with a wonderful luncheon and swim party at the home of Cecil and Frances Viverette for their August meeting. Each lady brought a dish or two. The table was decorated and filled with the most beautiful and tasty dishes. As is said "A party is only as successful and fun as the people in attendance. Thus, we had a fabulous buffet, swimming and meeting afterwards with the most fun loving ladies you can imagine. We also had two very special visitors, Claudine, Linda Harris's daughter, and Mandy, Frances Viverette's daughter. Our next outing is a trip to SCAD (Savannah School of Art and Design) in Savannah on Friday, October 9. Marilyn Owen, our fabulous "event planner" is arranging all of this for us. Our husbands, friends, etc. are also invited. We will meet the SCAD bus at the Visitors Center at 10 AM. They will then take us on a two hour tour of the many SCAD buildings, etc. throughout town. After our tour, we will enjoy lunch in the SCAD dining hall, Potter Hall. The bus is filling up fast and we can only accommodate 30 folks so get your name on Marilyn's list at [email protected]. We voted to support the boating outing for the Hilton Head Heroes once again. Many of our members donate their time and boats to take Hero families out to enjoy our beautiful waters. A check was given to Dave Shkor the YCHHI Captain in charge of this wonderful project. We also heeded the call to pay part of the cost for cleaning the carpet and tile at the club.
Our September meeting will be on September 15 at the Chart House. Plans are in the works for another fun trip perhaps towards the Beaufort area later in the fall.

Sailing/Regatta/BoatingActivities Committee Reports
Summer Sailing in Hilton Headby Henry Schultz
When we moved to Hilton Head, I was amazed that there was no summer racing. In Wisconsin we sail all summer, all three months of it! My Grandfather and Dad had strict traditions about living on Lake Winnebago. These traditions were partially driven by the weather. The lake freezes with up to three feet of ice each year. When the spring thaw arrives, the ice breaks up and moves. Ice piles up on the leeward shore and can reach 30 feet in height. Pieces of the ice as big as football fields, driven by the wind for up to 30 miles have the power to destroy anything in it's path. Docks don't stand a chance. No matter when the ice came off the lake, docks don't go in until Memorial Day. Sail, fish and swim all summer, but no matter the weather, the docks come out on Labor Day weekend. Part of the tradition was driven by the approaching winter, part was driven by school starting. If the dock is not out by Labor Day, good luck finding a weekend that the kids can help. Taking the dock out in four foot waves and driving snow has taught me the value of following the family tradition. Now I am learning the Hilton Head traditions. Don't race in the middle of summer. It gets too hot, very hot, down here in the Low Country.
Our spring race series this year was dominated by Demetri Telionis. If you lost track of where the next mark was, all you had to do was find Demitri and head in his direction, he was usually in the lead. Demitri is a sailor who loves the sport and graciously shares his knowledge and passion for sailing. If you missed his spring workshop on “The Science of Sailing” please watch the Main Sheet for the next one. Sailors that help others by passing along their knowledge and experience are the life blood of sailing. Yes we race and strive to win. We also freely share our knowledge with our competitors. When one of us gets better, we all get better. That's the nature of friendly competition. You may hear a racer ask, what are you doing to be so fast? “A little more vang upwind, ease the main halyard a bit, or I wanted to get up current along the shore where there is less tide effect,” are some of the replies. Racing accelerates a sailor's skill and confidence. Come and join us. You are always welcome to crew, or the more experienced may race a club boat.
A huge thank you to our club race committee. Tom Caldwell is our local PRO or Principal Race Officer. He has done an outstanding job of coordinating and staffing race committee boats. This is no small task, and he has been great to work with. If you would like to come out and watch the races, I am sure Tom can get you a ride on the committee boat. Join us for an opportunity to enjoy the races up close and personal. Watch the fun, see if racing is something you might want to do. Either way you can enjoy a day on the water watching the races with friends.
Next up, are the club owned Flying Scots. Hap Todd and Don Robins have put many hours of work upgrading the boats and trailers. The “blue boat” was sailed in the spring series and the “red boat” should be ready for the fall series. Red has a little more fiberglass work to be done on the newly installed soul, then a little rig tuning, a few tweaks and it's ready to race. Many thanks again to Hap and Don for volunteering their expertise, time and effort.
Deb Pepe has organized a “Sailing Opportunities Meeting” at the club on Sunday, September 13 from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. (yes, the middle of the Packer game) Please come and join us for fellowship and lots of good information about opportunities to sail, race, or ride with the race committee. Jim Landis will be sharing information on the upcoming Harbor Town Cup. Deb Pepe will share some new and exciting small boat sailing opportunities. Are you ready to race? Want to take a boat out for a cruise? Want a sailing lesson or refresher. Give Henry Schultz a call. Thanks to Deb and Jim for everything they have done to help sailing grow at our club. Important Race Schedule ChangeOur first Flying Scot Fleet 134 race will be September 26and will then continue as originally scheduled. Henry Schultz(920)[email protected]
****Lock your boats and trailers!! **** A large trailer was stolen off our property. Also, check your boat owners insurance. Your trailer should be covered under it.
