Red Ribbon Drug Abuse Awareness Campaign began in the early 1980s following the brutal murder of a drug Enforcement agent by the Mexican drug cartel. This agent’s name was Enrique “KiKi” Camarena. Prior to joining the DEA, he was a corporal in the Marine Corps. As a part of this awareness event the Substance Abuse Program is sponsoring a golf Tournament at Legends.

9SEPTEMBER 2015 MCCS HAPPENINGS
RED RIBBON WEEKRed Ribbon Week began in 1985 to honor Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent and former Marine. After coming close to exposing one of the biggest drug cartels in recent history, he was kidnapped and killed by drug trackers in Mexico. His body was found one month later in a shallow grave. Members of Camarena’s community began wearing red ribbons as a tribute to him and to raise awareness of the aects illegal drug use has on more than just the user.
Since 1990, the DoD has joined other organizations in a national observance of Red Ribbon Week to prevent illegal drug use among service members and their families. It is in Camarena’s honor that the military and civilian communities recognize his sacrice by celebrating and remembering his valiant eorts in keeping drugs from entering our borders.
To support the Marine Corps’ readiness mission and anti-drug policy, the Drug Demand Reduction Program (DDRP) was established. Through education, outreach and awareness programs the DDRP helps deter Marines from drug use. Alcohol abuse and the distribution, possession or use of drugs illegally is contrary to the Marine Corps Mission and will not be tolerated. (MCO 5300.17)
Red Ribbon Week is held during the last week of October each year to encourage communities to unite in showing support against drug abuse. It’s also a time to emphasize resources for substance-abuse related issues. This year, Red Ribbon Week will be observed from 23-31 October with the theme "Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free."™
As part of this year’s campaign, DDRP is hosting the 2nd annual Red Ribbon Golf Tournament at The Legends at Parris Island on 23 September. This event is FREE to all authorized users and Active Duty will have priority registration. You can register for the tournament online at http://redribbongolf.eventbrite.com.

PRIME For Life® is a risk reduction program. The rst goal of the program is to help each Marine in the program reduce their risk for any type of alcohol or drug problem. The second goal focuses on self-assessment to help Marines understand and accept the need to make changes to protect the things most valuable in their lives. The program is open to all Marines. PFL 4.5 is a universal prevention program and is not an appropriate substitute for a SAC referral for Marines who have had an ARI or who may be chemically dependent.
