Trevor Hodgson Biography

I was born in England in a small market town that

has given its name to fourteen communities in the

United States, called Newark. I attended the local

grammar school followed by a degree course in

Natural Science at Pembroke College, part of

Cambridge University. On graduation I joined an

international food company and worked in

computer systems, marketing and sales, and later in

business and corporate planning.

In 1977 my wife, Lesley and I, with our five

children moved to the United Sates. Our home

today is in the beautiful "Skylands" region of

northwest New Jersey.

For many years I took family and travel

photographs before going through a period of

waning interest. The time made available through

retirement and the development of digital cameras

has changed that. I now enjoy all styles of image

making and take a camera wherever I go.

My education did not include any formal artistic

training. I learn primarily from viewing the works

of others, especially those with more skill than I

have. Today the internet provides a limitless source

of examples and inspiration.

My photographs do not express a particular "artistic

vision". I make no claim to having a unique view or

perspective of the subjects I select to photograph.

My focus can migrate through landscapes, still life,

street photography and family portraits. I aim

primarily to produce a photograph that I find

pleasing and that is as good as I know how to make

it. If others like it too, that is very satisfying.

I have won many awards including exhibits as

diverse as the non members show at the Salmagundi

Art Club in Manhattan, the grand prize in the

Atlanta Audubon Society photography competition

and the New Jersey state fair. I have judged both

photography and art exhibits and organize the

annual "Skylands" art exhibit for the Sussex County

Arts and Heritage Council. My workshops have

included "How to Critique" and "Photographing

Art".

I am passionate about photography because it has

all the elements that make exploring so exciting.

The discoveries are endless: finding new subjects,

seeing familiar objects in new and unexpected

ways, visiting new locations, discovering hitherto

unappreciated beauty in familiar places, learning

how light can change (or be changed) to make

things appear different. It is an adventure, a

journey of exploration, of the development of one's

skills and understanding. It's about trying new ideas,

discovering new techniques, testing new subjects,

learning from others and sharing what's been learnt.

The journey never ends.

PASSING OF FOUNDING MEMBERS

As the Art Association in Roxbury celebrates its

50th

anniversary, we are sad to learn that two of our

founding members have recently passed away. As

many of you know, the Art Association in Roxbury

was founded by the Roxbury Women’s Club, when

a few members from the Arts, Gardens, and Crafts

Department decided to form a separate art group,

the Art Association in Roxbury. It is due to their

determination to start this new organization that our

group is here today.

Barbara Lo Conti

BARBARA LO CONTI

Barbara Lo Conti, 78, of Port Charlotte, Florida,

passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2015. She

was born in New York. She was married to Louis

Lo Conti for over 50 years and they lived in

Landing, New Jersey, where they raised their

children. She worked as a substitute teacher in the

Roxbury Township School District and later in

Florida. They had 2 children, one who lives in

Pennsylvania and the other in Arizona, and 4

grandchildren. Her husband passed away in 2014.

Barbara was quite active in the Roxbury Women’s

Club and one of the members who started the Art

Association in Roxbury.

Although Barbara did not consider herself an artist,

she was a very special art patron. She was a loyal

member of the Art Association in Roxbury for over

20 years until she and her husband retired to

Florida. She was a huge supporter of the Art

Association in Roxbury and provided

encouragement to all of the artists in the

organization.

Oil Painting of Waterloo Village by June

Fairweather

JUNE FAIRWEATHER

June Fairweather, 87, of Solomons, Maryland,

passed away on Monday, June 29, 2015. She was

born in Utah and worked as a stewardess for United

Airlines. She married Edwin William Fairweather

in San Francisco and they had 58 years together.

They lived in several places over the years,

including Illinois; Succasunna, New Jersey;

Michigan; Sparta, New Jersey; and Virginia. They

also traveled to Germany, England, and Australia.

June and Bill had four children, who are spread out

across the US in Oregon, Maryland, Virginia, and

New Hampshire; eight grandchildren; and 2 great

grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her.

While living in Succasunna, June was very active in

local politics and was the first official Town

Hostess. She was also a member of the Roxbury

Women’s Club and one of the members who started

the Art Association in Roxbury. Because her family

moved often, she was a member of the association

for only a short period of time. She was a wonderful

amateur artist who specialized in oil paintings of old

barns. She exhibited in multiple local art shows

over her lifetime and loved to paint scenes of

Waterloo Village in the 1960’s when it was first

opened to the public.

The Art Association in Roxbury was fortunate to

have 2 wonderful and supportive members. May

they rest in peace.

TRIVIA QUESTION

Although many of our charter members have passed

on and are no longer with us, there are still two

charter members who have been a member of the

Art Association of Roxbury for 50 years. Can you

guess who they are?
