TRANSCRIPT
The safety of South Salt Lake residents, businesses and city employees is at the top of our list of priorities. South Salt Lake Police Chief Jack Carruth, Fire Chief Ron Morris, Urban Livabil-ity Director, Glenn Smith, along with dozens of partners and resi-dents are working to strategically prevent crime and address other safety needs of our community. Together as the Promise South Salt Lake Safety Commission, these individuals and groups are tackling the top safety issues in South Salt Lake, which include
addressing substance abuse and mental health, decreasing the number of youth and adults that have gang involvement, increas-ing knowledge regarding simple actions for fire and other accident prevention in homes and businesses, and encouraging our com-munity’s involvement in efforts that prevent crime.
The collaborative, comprehensive work of the Promise SSL Safety Commission addresses the causes, symptoms, and solutions of these issues. SSL residents and individuals that live, learn, work, and worship in South Salt Lake are generating new energy and
forming new working relationships to solve current challenges and prevent future problems.
Programs and strategies currently being utilized include the SSL Police Department Community Resource Unit and Crisis Interven-tion Team, SSL Police Department Street Crimes and Traffic Unit, SSL Fire Department, SSL Multi-agency Community Resources Team, Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, South Salt Lake Coalition for Drug Free Youth, SSL Police Athletics/Activities League (PAL), SSL Public Works, SSLPD Honorary Colonels Association, ICAC (Pre-venting Internet Crimes Against Children), the Promise SSL Men-tor Network and afterschool programs, SSL Citizen Corps, Urban Livability’s Community Connection, and Code Enforcement.
The commitment, insight, and resourcefulness of this diverse and dedicated commission has a tremendous impact on making South Salt Lake a safe place to live, work, and worship. The safety of our community is all of our responsibility. Together, we have made tremendous strides over the past 5 years, and by continuing to make safety a top priority, we are creating one of the most desir-able places to live, work and raise a family in Utah. For more infor-mation about the Promise SSL Safety Commission, contact Chief Jack Carruth at [email protected] or Promise SSL Director, Kari Cutler, at [email protected].

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
The South Salt Lake Community Connection to Agriculture Program will provide residents with fresh fruits and vegetables at a weekly farm stand and a new mobile market. This program is made possible by funding from the Union Pacific Foundation, as well as grants from the federal government and Wells Fargo.
Besides providing fresh produce at low prices, the program plans to recruit local growers to participate in the South Salt Lake Farmer's Market and connect residents who are interested in growing produce to existing programs. The program is also designed to increase awareness about the health benefits of fresh produce.
The South Salt Lake Police Department promotes the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) model. CPTED is the proper design and effective use of the environment, which can lead to reduced crime through five overlapping strategies:
1. Natural Surveillance – Ensure intruders and offenders are easily viewable to people passing the property and those using the property (also known as “eyes on the street”).
2. Territorial Reinforcement – Create and extend the property’s sphere of influence – the perception that someone is in control of the area. Distinguish what is a private space from a public space by using landscaping, pavement designs, signage, and fences.
3. Natural Access Control – Decrease the opportunity for offending by denying access to a crime target and increasing the per-ception of risk to the offender.
4. Maintenance – Upkeep spaces to ensure they are used for their intended purpose. It also serves as an additional expression of ownership.
5. Target Hardening – Enhance the physical security of a crime target through the use of locks, types of doors and windows, security alarms, and other crime prevention methods.

YOUTHCITY COUNCIL
A Message from Chief of Police, Jack CarruthThe safety of our community is the priority for the men and women of the South Salt Lake Police Department. Supporting Mayor Cherie Wood’s Three Promises, the Police Department has remained steadfast in ensuring Promise Two: “Every resident has a safe, clean home and neighborhood.” I am proud that the City of South Salt Lake has held its overall crime rate steady in the past year.
In addition to all of our police officers and department staff, we credit you, our community, for our shared success. Community involvement makes our city a better place to live and do business. Each year we see improvement with new programs and an increase of community participation. This year we successfully launched “Coffee with a Cop” with you. These partnerships forged with our community make us a more effective police department and a safer city.
Our Police Department offers several programs to educate everyone about how to prevent crime, including DARE, RadKids, Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, Coffee with a Cop, and our P.A.L.. Our department also offers help with services like CPTED Inspections, extra patrol checks, and the crime tip hotline. We now have an online form to request property checks and CPTED on the police department website page under the “Business Watch” tab.
It is the mission of the South Salt Lake Police Department to enhance the quality of life in our city by providing quality police services. We are dedicated to upholding the highest professional standards while serving the community. We are committed to the enforcement of laws to protect life and property while also respecting individual rights, human dignity, and community values. We are committed to maintaining a partner-ship with our community and assisting citizens in identifying and solving problems to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods.
All of us at the South Salt Lake Police Department are excited to move forward as the city expands. With new commercial and residential growth, our partnerships become stronger. We look forward to your future input and support. It is working together that makes the difference.
“I know there is strength in the differences between us. I know there is comfort where we overlap.” - Ani Difranco

The South Salt Lake Police Department has a system of Community Policing Zones (CPZs) to proactively reduce crime. Community policing is the philosophy that police officers and citizens can work together in creative ways to solve community problems such as crime, fear of crime, social disorder, and neighborhood conditions.
The city has six neighborhood CPZ, each with a corresponding patrol squad of one Sergeant and four officers. They reach out to community members in their CPZ and to keep track of crime trends and unique problems.
CPZ assignments correspond with the time of day in which a sergeant is on duty, the history regarding crime trends, and calls for service in each CPZ. (Crime Prevention, School Resource Unit, and Crime Analysis).
If you would like to learn more about our Community Po-licing Zones, visit the Police tab at sslc.com. Share what's going on in your zone by emailing [email protected] to reach a Sergeant. Include your name, phone number, ad-dresses, and a detailed comment. The information will be given to the appropriate Sergeant.

Spot on Delicious: Utah PeachesSince the early 1900s, Utah's peach orchards have offered up dozens of varieties of top-quality fruit to win the hearts, souls, and stomachs of consumers, cooks, and professional chefs alike. However, nature doesn't always make a perfect peach every time. Growing season conditions and weather can be unpredictable at times and this year is one of those times. A blight this season is causing blemishes on peaches but the good news is that Utah's famed peaches are just as good to eat as ever!
It's a story of nature's different kind of beauty. Even though the peaches are not as pretty as in other years, they still are juicy and sweet, and on the inside where it really counts, they are just as beautiful.
1. Always ask for permission before using your name, address, telephone number, or school name on the Internet.2. Tell parents or guardians if you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable.3. Don't respond to messages that make you feel uncomfortable or uneasy.
4. Never give out credit card numbers or passwords online.5. Never send photos without parental permission.6. Be careful if someone offers something such as gifts or money for nothing in return.7. Don't accept gifts or offers that involve having someone visit your house.8. Never arrange to meet in person with someone you've met online unless you discuss it with your parents, and an adult goes with you.9. Set up rules with your parents for going online. Together, decide the best time of day, the length of time, and appropriate sites to visit online.10. Get to know your "online friends" just as you get to know all of your other friends. Be sure that you are dealing with someone that you and your parents know and trust before giving out any personal information.

South Salt Lake Rock Stars
Fire Department – Eric Sloan
South Salt Lake Fire Department Captain Eric Sloan goes above and beyond the call of duty. He is instrumental in seeing that the Fire De-partment’s personal protective equipment is ready for deployment at all times. Recently, Sloan spent numerous hours conducting drills, mock in-terviews, and personal conflict scenarios with the members of his platoon. He even took personal time to come in while on vacation to help prepare members of this department for the strenuous testing process. All view him as a mentor in our ever-changing fire service profession. Captain Sloan is more than deserving of this award because of the humility and dedication he shows every day in his job.
Police Department – Erin Anchando
South Salt Lake Police officers receive the support of a team of administrative assistants who organize the data and evidence used to fight crime. Erin Anchando stepped up to her position as a Records Technician last year and helped this team through a period of transition. She trained the two newest members of the Records Team and took the initiative to suggest outside training to further benefit the new employees. Erin has proven herself as a very valuable member of the Police Department and distinguished herself as a true Rock Star.

Community Connection HelpsEagle Scout and South Salt Lake Residents
Sam Lilly needed an Eagle Scout project, so the South Salt Lake Community Connection program was able to connect Sam with Barbara LeBreton, an elderly resident. On August 5, volunteers replaced flower beds, trimmed trees and plants, repainted parts of a shed, and improved the entire look of Barbara’s yard.
Barbara's step-daughter, Toni Whipperman, was very grateful for the project and shared this about Barbara: "She is a very kind and charitable woman. I have known her for over 40 years. She is generous and loving to all who know her even though she struggles with many health issues and financial limitations. Her life has been spent serving and being a caretaker of her sick stepfather, a husband with congenital heart failure, and a best friend who died of cancer. They all lived in her home as she cared for them until they passed on. She has been widowed 20 years and now lives alone.” The project was a great success thanks to the volunteers, city residents, city staff, and Eagle Scouts.

Coffee with a Cop is part of a na-tional initiative to create a common venue for community members and police officers to come together. There are no agendas or speeches, just the opportunity to ask ques-tions, voice concerns, and the chance to get to know the officers in our neighborhoods.
“Coffee with a Cop creates an opportunity for our officers and community members to become acquainted, and to remove bar-riers that often make us appear unapproachable,” said South Salt Lake Police Chief Jack Carruth. South Salt Lake Chamber supports the program as an ongoing way for businesses to increase their involvement in our community’s safety.
Join us on the first Wednesday of each month from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at 2929 South State Street. The next event is Wednesday, September 2.

Each presentation will be 10 - 15 minutes with a question and answer session. The presentation will be given ev-ery 30 minutes throughout the two hour period. We look forward to seeing you then!
A Message from Fire Chief, Ron Morris Did you know that roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. when most people are asleep? This year’s focus for National Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, 2015 is centered on the importance of smoke alarms.
Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast, and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Having a working smoke alarm doubles a person’s chances of surviving a reported fire. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside separate sleeping areas, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms. If you do not have smoke alarms in your home, install them right away. If you already have them, test them regularly.
If you have questions or need help with your smoke alarms, don’t hesitate to call our fire department for help. It is our job to serve you, the citizens of South Salt Lake as your Fire Department. If there is anything we can do to help you, please call us at 801.483.6043.
The Good Landlord: Crime Free Multi-Housing Program Since 2007, the South Salt Lake Police Department has been addressing crime concerns with rental properties through the Good Landlord: Crime Free Multi-Housing Program. For the past eight years, Officer Paul McCullough has coordinated with local landlords, apartment complex managers, and officers to eliminate problems as they occur in a timely and efficient manner. “The City of South Salt Lake has maintained a lower crime rate since 2007; it isn’t hard to see that the Good Landlord Program has made a significant impact,” commented SSL Police Chief Jack Carruth. “We have also seen fewer calls for service and more desirable tenants for property owners – a win for everyone.”
The police department works in partnership with the city’s business licensing division in the Community Development department andwith the Utah Apartment Association to train and educate multi-housing property owners on crime prevention techniques, liability con-cerns, the eviction process, and other related topics. Property owners and managers are required to attend this certification training to qualify for the program. The property owners use a series of “good practices” such as requiring a written lease, performing background checks on prospective tenants, and having an eviction process for repetitive nuisance type behavior or criminal activity.

Mosaic Art Brings New Life toCentral Park Community Center
Mural artist Roger Whiting led youth at the Central Park Community Center in creating a mural that represents the diverse interests and cultures of youth there. Roger spent time working with kids in South Salt Lake’s Promise After School Program to get ideas for the mural. This included images of kids, friendships, favorite foods, and activities includ-ing boxing. With Roger’s help, boxes of porcelain tile were smashed into small pieces, carefully arranged and adhered on sheets of mesh, and then grouted and hung at the entrance. Whiting said, “The youth at Central Park are so creative. This project reflects the joy and enthusiasm they have for life.” This project and other works by the artist can be found at rogerwhiting.com.
The South Salt Lake Arts Council and the Sorenson Legacy Foundation funded the proj-ect. Join the youth and artist in the unveiling of the new mural on Friday, September 11 at 4:30 p.m. at the east entrance of the center.
